My invention is concerned with clamping mechanism for preventing rotative movement of the arm on a radial drilling machine and is particularly concerned with the controlling of such clamping mechanism.
In a radialv drill, a post or column is provided for supporting a radial arm which is adapted to have rotative movement about the post. The radial arm may be mounted on a sleeve member which is rotatively mounted on the post or may have a sleeve member formed as a part of the arm or may be mounted in any suitable manner to have rotative movement about the post. 'A drill head, which is mounted on and movable along the radial arm carries a suitable drilling tool. One of the principal features of my invention is to provideimproved means for clamping the radial arm against rotative movement when in an operative position.
Another feature of my invention is to provide means for controlling the clamping mechanism at a point adjacent to the drill head. When the drill headhas been set in a predetermined position the arm as above set forth mustbe firmly clamped against rotative movement. In many radial drilling machines the clamping means is controlled at a point adjacent to the post or column. This requires the operator of a machine to change hisposition and effect the clamping operation while away from the drill head. Theclamping operation is therefore effected in such a case when the operatoris not in a position to watch and insure against any movement or change in position of the radial arm. In a machine constructed in accordance with my invention the clamping mechanism is controlled by a lever mounted adjacent to the head and is movable along the arm in accordance with the movement of the head.
1 In the preferred form of my invention the clamping shaft extends along the radial arm and has oneend thereof mounted on and movable with the drill head. An operating handle is provided for operating the clamping shaft at a point adjacent to the drill head. Preferably the operating lever is mounted on the clamping shaft adjacent to the drill head, thus the operating lever is moved in accordance with the movements of the drillhead and is so located as not to interfere with the operation of the head by the machine opera or. .In some clamping mechanisms now constructed a clamping lever which is mounted on the head, rotates a clamping shaft extend.- mg along the complete length of the radial arm. In such a construction the operating lever and the clamping shaft are in the Way of the operator in controlling themovement of the tool head. As above set forth the o crating lever for the clamping shaft is lo cated according to my invention to the side of the drill head and the clamping shaft does not extend beyond the drill head. Thus the clamping shaft and clamping lever do not interfere with the operation of the drill head.
In a clamping mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention the clamping shaft extends through an elongated hub formed on a gear-segment which is mounted towards the rear of the radial arm. A spline connection is provided between the clamping shaft and gear-segment so that the gear-segment is given a movement of rotation in accordance with the rotative movement of the clamping shaft while permitting axial movement of the clamping shaft in accordance with the movement of the drill head along the radial arm. The gear-segment. operates a rack and pinion mechanism which in turn operates a Vertical shaft for controlling a clamping mechanism. The gear-segment, the rack and pinion and the vertical shaft are mounted on the radial arm and the sleeve portion of the radial arm and out of the way of the machine operator.
Other objects and advantages will be in part indicated in the following description and in part rendered apparent therefrom in connection with the annexed drawings.
To enable others skilled in the art so fully to apprehend the underlying features hereof that they may embody the same in the various ways contemplated by this invention, drawings depicting a preferred typical construction have been annexed as a part of this disclosure and, in such drawings, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, of which Figure 1 is a front elevational iew of a mobile radial drill having a clamp mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a partial end elevational view of the machine shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the clamping shaft.
Referring to the accompanying drawings a radial drill 1 is shown mounted on a truck 2 which is movable along rails 3; The truck 2 is moved along the rails 3 by means of an electric motor (not shown) and is clamped to the rails when in set position by means of the clamping mechanisms 4 and The construction and operation of the truck for carrying the radial drill is more fully described in my Patent No. 1,685,07 2, Sept. 18, 1928, and reference may be had to such copending application for such further description of the truck and the mechanism for clamping it to the rails.
The radial drillin machine comprises a post or column 6 which is secured to the truck 2 in any suitable manner as by means of bolts 7 A radial arm 8 having a sleeve portion 9 formed thereon is rotatively mounted on the post or column 6. A drill head 10 is mounted on and movable along the arm 8. The head 10 is provided with the usual spindle 11 carrying a drilling tool '12. The head 10 may be of any preferred construction and is adapted to be moved along and clamped in any'set position on the arm 8. The spindle 11 and the drilling tool 12 are preferably operated by means of a motor 13 which is mounted 011 the end 14 of the arm 8 which projects beyond the post 6. Inasmuch as my invention is not particularly related to the means for operating the drill head and the connecting means between such head and the propelling. motor a detailed description of such apparatus is deemed unnecessary.
Inasmuch as it is not necessary to operate the radial drill disclosed in the application at different heights no provision is made for raising and lowering the radial arm as in the Patent No. 1,685,072. Accordingly the sleeve 9 is formed integral with the arm and is a portion thereof.
' Provision is made for clamping the sleeve portion 9to the post 6 in order to insure against any rotative movement of the radial arm 8 when in a set position; The lower part 16 of the sleeve portion 9 is enlarged to form a bell which is circumferentially cut as indicated by the reference character 17. The bell 16 is also transversely cut as indicated by the reference character 18 to provide slightly flexible wings 19 and 20. The wings are provided with lugs 21 and 22 which by means of a draw-bolt 23 (actuated by an cecentric 24 on the shaft 25 journaled in the parts 26 and 27) may be drawn together to clamp the sleeve portion against a post. Thus, by rotating the shaft 25 through a partial revolution the sleeve may be clamped or unclamped at will. I
The above described clamping mechanism, which is located on the sleeve portion 9, to the rear of the post, is operated from a point adjacent to the head 10. The shaft 25, which carries the eccentric 15 for operating the clamping mechanism, is connected to a Vertical shaft 28 by means of a coupling 29. The vertical shaft 28 carries a pinion 30 which meshes with teeth 31 formed on a rack 32. The rack 32 is slidably supported on the sleeve portion 9 by means of a bearing lug 33. The vertical shaft 28 is provided with a bearing lug 34 projecting from the sleeve 9. The rack 32 carries a second set of teeth 35 which mesh with the teeth formed on a gear-segment 36. The gear-segment 36 is mounted upon the radial arm 8 and has an elongated hub portion 37.- A clamping shaft 38 extends through the hub portion 37, as shown in Fig. 3, and has a spline connection with the gearsegment 36. The hub 37 has a bearing in a lug on the sleeve 9. Thus, the clamping shaft and the gearsegment are compelled to rotate together while the clamping shaft is free to move'axially with respect to the gear-segment.
The clamping shaft 38 extends along the arm 8 and has one end thereof secured to the head 10 in order to move in accordance with the movement of the head along the arm. The shaft 38 projects through a hub 40 which is formed on the side of the head 10 next to the sleeve 9. A collar 41is pinned to the shaft on one side of the hub 40 and an operating lever 42 is pinned to the shaft on the opposite side of the hub 40. Thus, by
means of the collar 41 and the operating lever 42 the shaft 38 is compelled to move in accordance with the movement of the head along the arm. The lever 42 serves to rotate the clamping shaft for operating the clamping mechanism and thus control the clamping and unclamping of the sleeve portion 9 to the post or column. In the above construction attention is called to the fact that the lever 42 and also the operating shaft 38 are located to the side of the head 10 and out of the way of the machine operator. Although the operating lever 42 is out of the operators way still it is conveniently located so that the clamping operation may be effected Without the operator changing his position after having set the head in an operative position.
lVithout further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of this invention that others can, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt it for various utilizations by retaining one or more of the features that, from the standpoint of the prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of either the generic or specific aspects of this inven tion. and, therefore, such adaptations should be, and are intended to be, comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalency of the following claims 2- Having thus revealed this invention, I claim as new and desire to secure the following combinations and elements, or equivalents thereof, by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A radial drill combining a post; a sleeve rotatably journaled on said post; an arm supported by and projecting laterally from said sleeve; a tool-head translatably mounted on said arm; means for clamping said sleeve to said post; clamp actuating means including a clamp actuating slide-bar; an elongated bearing provided by said sleeve and extending lengthwise of said arm; a sleeve member journaled in said bearing and held against axial movement relative thereto; a gear secured to said sleeve member and engaging rack teeth on said slide-bar; a shaft having one end journaled in a bearing providedcby said tool-head and held against axial movement relative thereto, whereby said shaft is translated with said head, said shaft also having a telescoping connection with said sleeve member and being held against rotation relative thereto; a clamp-actuatin lever fixed to said shaft adjacent said too head for actuating said clamp, through said shaft. sleeve member, gear and slide bar, in all of the positions of said head along said arm.
2. A radial drill combining a post; a sleeve rotatably journaled on said post; means adj ment the lower end of said sleeve for clamping it to said post; an arm supported by and projecting laterally from said sleeve; a drill head translatably mounted on said arm; clamp actuating means comprising a shaft extending lengthwise of said sleeve and connected at one end with said clamp means; a gear element non-rotatably secured to said shaft, :1 rack-bar slidably mounted on said sleeve and cooperating with said gear element; a second gear element engaging teeth of said rack-bar; a twopart shaft journaled lengthwise of said arm, said two-part shaft comprising an elongated tubular member rotatably and non-translatably journaled on said sleeve and carrying said second gear element and a rod having a telescoping connection with said tubular element and being held scribed my name.
