Description

Nov. 5, 1929.
s. c. HOPE SAFETY RAZOR Original Filed Sept. 15. 1927 lll',
INVENTOR JZZVLEY C HOPE BY lmau; www
ATTORNEYJ' Patented Nov. 5, 1929 UNITED STATES STANLEY CRAIG HOPE, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS,"
SAFETY RAZOR Original application led September 15, 1927, Serial jN'e.y 219,748; Dividedend this `application led August 15, 1928.
My invention relates to safety razors, and particularly to means for storing extra blades in, and withdrawing them singly for use from the handle.
My invention comprises wit-h other features, a special magazine for holding a number of blades, means for placing and retaining the magazine in the handle, and means for withdrawing the blades singly from the magazine and handle.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will first describe in detail the mode in which I at present, prefer to carry the invention into practice, and then particularly point out the novel features of the invention in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the application in which like parts are designated by the same letters in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of the handle of a safety razor, embodying my invention, showing the blades stored in the handle. v
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the handle showing one blade being withdrawn.
Figure 3 is a sectional View on the line 3 3, Figure l.
In the drawings, number 7 designates the handle of the razor, which is hollow, and open at its lower end, and is provided with a re movable cap 8 fitted over its lower end for closing it. A bayonet lock 9 is, by preference provided, for securing the cap 8 removably on the open end of the handle.
To provide for storing a package of blades in the hollow handle 7, and for removing the blades therefrom singly as needed, I prefer to pack a number of blades 15 in a special 4o case 28, of wood or other light and cheap material, having a medial axial squared bore 29 open at both ends, and opening forwardly through a narrower slot 30 in its front wall 31.
The packed blades are pressed against the inside of the front wall 31, by a longitudinal strip 32, acting as a follower, bearing against the rearmost blade and pressed thereagainst by springs 33 held in recesses 34 in 56 the back of the bore 29, and pressing against Serial N'r 299,755.
b'othends ofthe follower 32. Allv the blades in the case 28,1except'the foremost blade are held against longitudinal displacement in the case by a `cover 35 screwed over the open bottom of the case, and having'a' slot 36, in longi- 55 tudinal alignment withy the foremost blade, to permit the `same to be ejected therefrom.
The cap'8 is likewise providedlwith a bladeejection slot" 37, 'in longitudinal alignment with theslot '36in the magazine or case'cover 50 35. The followerz'istapered atboth ends oni its face as shown* at 39,away from the front wall 31,y to facilitate ythe introduction oftheblad'es betweenithe follower and the front wall 31.
The case or magazine 28'containing the blades is fitted to and inserted in the front portion .ofthe tubular handle 7. In the rear portion' of 'said handle is fitted to slidelongitudinally, aA blade ejection carrier 40, tof'theface 70 of which isattached "a springLarm 41 having on its upper end 4a bl'adehook 42,which projects throughzand iridesin'thev slot 30`in the wall of .the case. The bladehook 42projects forwardly'enough to engage'the upper edge of one blade only, and to the back of the car-- rier 40^is attached: an -ejector button 44, by a screw 43,'projecting through and riding in a longitudinal'slot 45, formed in the rear of the handle wall. j y
Thejejector carrier 40, is normally pressed upward by a coiled spring 46, inserted in a tubular guide 47 forming'thelower portion of thefcarrienthe upperend ofthe spring bearingagainstthe solidupper'head 48 of the 85 carrier, and the lower end of the spring bearing against a plunger 49, fitted loosely in the tubular carrier guide 47, and having a stem 50 projecting through the constricted lower opening 5l of the guide and resting on the 90 inside of the handle cap 8, to hold the same against turning.
Thus, by simply depressing the button 44 with the finger, a single blade is easily ejected so that it can be withdrawn by hand from a5 the handle through the slots 36 and 37, for use in the clamping head of the razor as previously described.
It is evident that many changes may be made ,in the speciiic construction and arrangement of my invention herein described without departing from the boundaries thereof as defined by the following claims. l
This application is a division of my prior application for patent, Serial No. 219,748, filed September 15th, 1927.
I claim as my invention: I
1. A safety razor comprising a tubular handle having a removable cap with a blade ejection opening at its lower end, a ca sefor packing a number of blades in the handle having a removable cover with a blade-ejection opening in its lower end registering with the ejection opening in the cap, and means for ejecting a single blade through the openings in the lower ends of the handle cap and case cover.
2. A safety razor as specified in claim 1, in which the lower end of the blade-case is closed by a detachable cover having a blade-ejection opening.
3. A safety razor as specified in claim 1, in
in which the blade ej ect-or consists of an ej ector carrier sliding longitudinally in the handle outside the blade-case, a spring ejector arm having a blade hook projecting through the case opening over one blade only, and a carrier elevating spring below the carrier. l
, A safety razor asspecitied in claim 1 in which the ej ector carrier has a tubular eXtension guide, and a plunger and intervening carrier spring,` are fitted loosely in said tubular guide.
.5. A safety razor as specified in claim l, in which the ejecting means comprise an ej ectorl carrier having a tubular guide with a constricted lower opening and a plunger having a stem projecting through said opening and bearing on the lower handle cap.
6. A safety razor as specied in claim l, i
in which the tubular handle has a longitudinal side opening, and the ejecting means comprise an interior ejector carrier and an; operating button sliding outside the handle and connected through the handle opening with the interior ejector carrier.
In testimony'whereof I aiiix my signature.
STANLEY CRAIG HOPE.
