Byfij v A iiorney Patented Nov. 5, 1929 GEORGE PRIMBS, J11, OF IPOCATELLG, IDAHO I LOCK DEVICE FOR NUMBERING MACHINES Application filed January 8, 1929. Serial No. 331,058.
The present invention appertains to an improvement in numbering machines for printing presses and more particularly the invention resides in a locking device for associa tion with the numbering machine, whereby the movable type carrying element of the machine may be fixed against displacement beyond proper printing position during the operation of the printing press.
The prime object of the invention is to provide a locking device for numbering machines so that the momentum of the number ing wheels, or type carrying members, acquired in high speed printing will not displace thenumbers beyond their proper printing position.
An important object of the invent on 1s to provide a device of this character which may be adapted for use without a very great 1n- 2O stallation cost.
These and other objects of the invention will become more apparent to the reader after considering the invention as described and claimed hereinafter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a conventional numbering device equipped with the improved locking device.
Figure 2 represents a perspective view of the locking device.
Figure 3 represents a cross sectional view through the device taken substantially on the line 38 of Figure 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
5 Figure 4 is a cross sectional view of the numbering machine with the locking device provided thereon as an integral part of the machine.
Referring to the drawing, wherein like numerals designate like parts, the conventional numbering machine is generally referred to by numeral 1 and includes a block 2 of suitable material, usually steel. The block is formed with a cut-out portion to provide a pocket 3. The end portion 4 of the block is hollowed out for slidably receiving the lower portion of a type carrying body or plunger 5, which is depressible against sultable spring action within the end portion 4 and operably connected with pawl frame 11; swinging pawl frame is caused to rotate the numbering wheel or wheels mounted within the pocket 3 on shaft 6. The members 7 are each independent of shaft 6 and each carry a ratchet normally engaged by a one way pawl 8, for permitting the members to rotate in 0 wheel 9 which causes a different number or character of type on the type carrying members 7 to register in alignment with the printing group.
The foregoing briefly sets forth the construction and operation of the conventional numbering machine and the improvement resides in providing a U-shaped plate 12, which may be secured to one side of the machine in the manner shown in Figures 1 and 3. The upstanding leg portions of the plate 12 have secured thereto the respective ends of a rod 13. Fixedly mounted on the rod 13 is an elongated plate 14 which is formed at one edge portion to provide clamping knuckles 15-15 for engagement with the rod 13. The inner side of the plate 14 is provided with a plurality of spaced prongs 16 equal in numher to the number of annular type carrying members 7. The prongs are adapted to enwith the ratchets of the members 7.
tationarily mounted on the plate 14 are protuberances 16 and 17 for engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheels 9. Thus by depressing the body 5 the swinging pawl frame 11 releases the member 17 allowing the pawl 10 to carry member 7 to register in alignment with the printing group and upon completion of stroke again locking members 7, as indicated in Figure 4 thus preventing any further operation.
In Figure 4 of the drawings, apin 13' is shown with its ends anchored in the respective ends of the block 2 and may have arranged thereon the elongated plate 14: carrying the prongs 16 and the protuberance 17 for engagement with the numbering mechanism in the manner before described.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A numbering machine for use on printing presses including a mounting in which a plurality of type carrying members are rotatably mounted with pawl and ratchet means for operating the same, a. securer for engagement with the ratchet of the rotatable members to hold the same fixed when they have arrived at perfect alignment, said securer consisting of a plate adapted to be attached to the mounting, a plurality of projections on the plate for engaging the 'ratehets of the rotatable members, and a construction on the plate for engaging the pawl frame to operate the projections on the plate in and out of locking position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
