The present invention relates to ignition systems and particularly ignition systems adapted for use with oil burners and has for one of its objects the provision ofa construction wherein the igniter is given a complete revolution to move the same into and out of firing position. It will be appreciated by those skilled in this art that by moving the igniter out of firin position after the same has functioned, car onizing of the electrodes of the igniter due to oil collecting thereon, or injury to the electrodes from the heat of the burner is eliminated.
In the drawings accompanying this application, Fig. 1 isview in part sectional elevational view of an installation embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and v Fig. 3 shows the drive mechanism.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a burner mounted so as to extend into a furnace 2, the forward end of the burner passing through a plate 3 secured to the furnacle front.
4' designates a blower for supplying air to the burner and also, if desired, for feeding oi'l to the burner. v
The blower constitutes no part of the present invention nor does the construction of the burner itself and hence these parts will not be describedin any detail.
5 designates a spark plug base and 6 a clamping member by which a spark plug 7 is held inthe base 5. The base 5 of the plug is rotatably mounted in a bearing member 8 and is clamped therein by bearing cap 9.
The spark plug 7 is provided with two electrodes 10 and 11, these electrodes extend-l ing into the furnace a short distance in line with the longitudinal'axis of the plug and then being bent outwardly or laterally and yfinallyinwardly toward each other to provide a spark gap 12.
13 designates a driving tube screwed mto the clamping member 6, this tube extending rearwardl of the burner to a point adjacent one end o a motor 14. The rear end of the driving tube 13 is rovided with a sprocket 15, this sprocket an a sprocket 16 carried by 19 and passes through the driving tube 13 55 and is led upwardly to a transformer 20.
The motor assembly 14 contains the necessary switch mechanism for timing of the delivery of current to the transformer 20,
varied `'within wide limits I have deemed it unnecessary to illustrate the same for the purposes of' this application. 1 may say, however, that the motor 14 vis adapted to make and inasmuch as this construction may be a complete revolution each time the same is operated, and on each revolution current is supplied to the transformer 20, the secondary of which supplies current to the spark plug 7. Initially the electrodes 10 and 11 of the spark plug are in the full line position of Fig. 1, in which position they areoset with respect to the burner 1, i. e., out of the path of fuel issuing from the burner. Upon operation of the motor 14 the electrodes 10 and 11 are rotated through the chain drive, above described, for a complete revolution, passingv from the full line position of Fig. 1 to the dotted 4line position and continuing to the full line position again. In the dotted line position of the electrodes, i. e.,with the'spark 80 gap in the path of the fuel issuing from the burner a spark is roduced'across the gap 12 to effect the desire ignition of the fuel.
It will be seen, therefore, that I have provided an ignition apparatus 'adapted for use with oil burners'in which the electrodes of the igniter, when the igniter is operated, make a complete revolution, under the positive drive of the motor 14, coming to rest, however,'in a position where the electrodes are out of the ath of the burnin fuel and hence carbonizlng of the electro es and injury to the electrodes due to the heat of the burner are prevented.
