This invention relates to builders hardware and more particularly to a combined door holder and bumper.

One object of the invention is to provide a device of thisV character which may be firmly secured in a set position and serve to pre* vent a door from moving in an openi-ng direction to such an extent that its knob will strike and mar a wall and also serve to engage the door and retain it in an opened position.

Another object of the invention is to permit the combined door holder' and bumper to be disposed adjacent the. junction of a loor with a wall and secured either to the iioor or a chairV board extending along the wall.

Another object of the invention is to provide a door bumper and holder which may be formed from strips of strong sheet metal bent to assumel the proper configuration to form various parts oft' the device and thereby produce a device of this character which will be strong and durable and at the Same time cheap to produce.

Another object of the invention is to provide a 'floor board engaging bracket of such construction that it may be easily applied to the bumper and keeper forming portion of the device and rmly secured thereto but permitted to be .easily removed if i-tr is desired to secure the device upon a iioor instead of securingit to the chair board.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the improved device in top plan and secured to a chair board and engaged with a door shown in section;

The improved bumper and door holder constituting the subject-matter of this'invention includes a base 1, a bumper 2 and a keeper 3. The base 1 consists of a strip of strong metal of suitable length and width and' adjacent its ends this base forming strip has been formed with openings 4 and 5 through which securing screws 6 and 7 may be passed so that the device may be secured directly upon a floor close to a wall or in spaced relation to the wall if so desired, as shown in Fig. 4.

The bumper 2 also consists of a strip of strong metal having a width corresponding to the base strip 1 and this strip from which the bumper is formed is bent intermediate its length to provide an attaching portion 8 and an upstanding arm 9. The attaching portion 8 is bent transversely intermediate its length to` dispose its forward and rear end portions in oiiset relation to each other so that, when the bumper is resting upon the base strip and secured thereon either by the screw 6 which enters the ioo'r or by a shorter screw 10 which is threaded into the opening 4, the forward portion of the attaching portion will be spaced abovev the base strip. In spaced relation to its upper end, the arm 9 is bent rearward-ly and then upwardly to provide a shoulder 11 and head 12, a threaded opening 13 being formed in the head to receive a screw 14 which passes axially through a pad 15. and secures the pad to the head with the pad resting upon and supported by the shoulder 11. It should be noted that the pad projects forwardly from the shoulder so that when the door 16 is opened it will strike the pad instead of the arm itself.

rThe keeper 3 also consists of a strip of metal of a width corresponding to the base strip. and bumper and is bent intermediate its length to provide a horizontally extending attaching arm 17 and an upstanding latch arm. 18 which is bentforwardly in spaced relation to its upper end and then upwardly to define a shoulder19 and head 20. A pad 21, similar to the pad 15, is secured against the rear Jface of the head 2O and rests upon the shoulder 19 with a portion projecting rearwardly from the shoulder to engage the door and confine the door between the arms of the bumper and keeper. The attaching arm 17 extends in an even plane throughout Vpivotally mounted either b-y a rivet 22, as

shown in Fig. 2, or by a machine screw 23, as shown in Fig. l. It will thus be seen that the keeper will be pivotally mounted for swinging movement in a horizontal plane and may be easily swung into and out of position to extend transversely beneath the door with its arm 18 extending upwardly and its pad 21 engaging the door and contacting with the opposite face thereof from the pad 15.

In order to support the device from a chair board or wainscoting 24, l have pro-v vided a mounting bracket which is indicated in general by the numeral 25. This bracket consists of a strip of strong' metal which is folded intermediate its length to provide a flange 26 of double thickness and the outer leaf of this flange carries side arms 27 having openings 28 formed therein to receive securing screws 29, by means of which the bracket is to be secured against the chair board. After the flange 26 has been formed, the end portions of the strip are bent at substantially right angles to the flange to provide arms which project forwardly from the flange in vertical spaced relation to each other and constitute upper and lower walls 30 and 31 for a socket which is open at its forward end and adapted to receive the rear end portions of the base strip 1 and attaching arm of the bumper, as shown in Fig. Side arms project from opposite sides of the upper wall, and these arms are folded downwardly, as shown at 32, and then inwardly, as shown at 33, to form side walls for the socket and prevent the upper and lower walls from being forced apart and thereby prevented from properly gripping the base stri p and bumper forming strip. The lower wall 31 projects forwardly from the open forward end of the socket to provide a tongue or platform 34 which extends beneath the base strip for the full length thereof and is formed with an opening to register with the opening 5 so that a bolt 35 may be passed through the registering openings. The eX- treme forwardend of the tongue or platform is bent downwardly to provide a lip 36 adapted to bear against a side edge face of the securing nut 37 of the bolt 35 so that its nut may be held against turning and thereby prevented from working` loose.

lWhen the device is in use, it may be used with or without the bracket 25. lf the braclret is employed, the rear end portions of the base strip and attaching arm of the bumper are connected by means of a short machine screw or bolt 10 so that they may be fitted into the socket and the forward end of the base strip is secured by means of the bolt 37. The bracket is then disposed against the chair board at the proper place to permit the door to engage the pad 15 when opened and the keeper to be swung beneath the door into position to engage the opposite face thereof from the pad 15 and retain `the door in an open position. If the device is to'be employed without the attaching bracket, screws G and 7 are substituted for the machine screw l() and bolt 35 and the base strip rests directly upon the floor where it is secured in a proper position through the medium of the screws. ln either case, the keeper is disposed above the floor so that it may be easily swung in a horizontal glane inte or out of position to engage an open door and Vconfine the door between the pads 15 and 21. It should also be noted that the keeper may be engagedwith a foot and swung into and out of a door securing position and, therefore, it is not necessary to lean over in order to adjustit.

Having thus described the invention, I claim:

l. A door holder and bumper comprising a base adapted to be secured stationary in a horizontal plane with one end disposed to extend beneath an opened door t"ansversely thereof, a. bumper forming strip secured to said base and having a portion extending upwardly in space relation to the said end of the base to provide an arm for engaging one face of an opened door, and a latch strip pivotally mounted between the base and bumper strip for swinging movement in a horizontal plane and projecting from the base to extend beneath an opened door and formed with an upstanding arm to engage the opposite face of the door from the bumper arm andconfine the door between the arms when opened. A door holder and bumper comprising a base adapted to be secured stationary in a horizontal plane with one end disposed tol extend beneath an opened door transversely thereof, a bumper forming strip secured to saidbase andA extending longitudinally thereof with a portion spaced from the base and having its free end portion bent upwardly toform an arm, and a latch forming strip pivotally mounted between the base and bumper strip and projecting forwardly from the bumper and having its free end portion bent upwardly te form an arm spaced from the first arm and adapted to engage a door at the opposite side thereof from the first arm.

3, A door holder and bumper comprising a base adapted to be secured stationary in a horizontal plane, a bumper carried by said base and having an attaching portion secured to said base and an upstanding arm formed with a horizontal shoulder adjacent its upper end, a pad secured to the upper end portion of said arm and resting upon said shoulder', a keeper pivoted to said base to swing 1n a horizontal plane and projecting Cil from thefbase and having an upstanding arm formed with a horizontal shoulder adjacent its upper end, and a pad secured to the upper end portion of the keeper arm and resting against the shoulder thereof and adapted to engage the opposite face of a door from that engaged by the pad carried by the bumper arm.

A door holder and bumper comprising a. base strip, a bumper consisting of a strip bent to provide an attaching arm extending longitudinally of said base strip and a bumper arm upstanding from the attaching arm, the rear portion of said attaching arm being secured to said base strip in flat contacting engagement therewith and the forward portion of the attaching -arm being spacedrabove the base st-rip and terminating in spaced relation t0 its forward end, the forward end of the base strip and rear ends of the base strip and attaching arm having fastener receiving openings formed therein, and a keeper consisting of a strip bent to provide a horizontal attaching arm and an upstanding keeper arm, the attaching arm having its rear end portio-n extending between the base strip and forward portion o-f the attaching arm of said bumper and pivotally secured to swing in a horizontal plane into and out of position to extend beneath a door and confine the door between the bumper arm and keeper arm.

5. A door bumper and holder comprising a base, a bumper having an attaching por tion secured upon the rear portion of said base, a keeper carried by said base and adapted to engage a door and confine the door between the bumper and keeper, and a supporting bracket adapted to be secured to a support and including a socket adapted to receive the rear end portions of the base and attaching portion of the bumper.

A door bumper and holder comprising a base, a bumper having an attaching portion extending longitudinally of the base and secured upon the rear portion thereof, 'a keeper carried by said base and adapted to engage a door and confine the door between the bumper and keeper, a supporting bracket having an attaching portion adapted to be secured to a support, a socket projecting forwardly therefrom and open at its front end and adapted to receive the rear end portions of the base and attaching portion of the bumper, and an arm projecting forwardly from saidsocket below the base and releasably secured to the forward end portion thereof. 7. A door bumper and holder comprising a base, a bumper having an attaching portion extending longitudinally of the base and secured upon the rear portion thereof, a keeper carried by said base and toengage a door and confine the door between the bumper and keeper, a supportingbracket consisting of a strip folded transversely intermediate its ends to form a support engaging flange an'd having its end portions bent to project forwardly away from the flange and constituting upper and lower walls of a socket to receive the rear portions of the base and attaching portion of the bumper, and side arms projecting from the upper wall and folded downward and beneath the lower wall t form side walls for the socket. 8. A door bumper and holder comprising a base, a bumper and door holding means carried by said base, and a mounting bracket adapted to be secured to a support and including a socketopen at one end and adapted to receive the rear end portion of said base.

9. A door bumper and holder comprising a base, a bumper and door holding means carried by said base, the forward en'd of the base having a fastener receiving yopening therein, and a mounting adapted to be secured to a support and. including a socket open at its forward end to receive the rear end of said base, a tongue extending forwardly from the socket beneath the base and formed with an opening registering with the opening in the base, and a removable fastener received in said opening.

10. A door bumper and holder comprising a base, a bumper and door holding means carried by said base, the forward end of the base having a fastener receiving opening therein,

a mounting adapted to be secured to a support and including a socket open at its forward end to receive the rear end of said base, a tongue extending forwardly from the socket beneath the base and formed with an opening registering with the opening in the base, a bolt passed downwardly through the opening in the base and tongue, and a securing nut upon'the lower end of said bolt, the forward end of said tongue having ya depending lug engaging said nut to hold the nut upon the bolt.
