IMPROVEMENT IN RE FLECTING CHIMNEVS, GLOBES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 73,227, dated February 8, 1876 application filed 'December 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. LINDSAY,
' of Scott township, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reflecting Chimneys, Globes, &c.; and I do hereby de- My invention relates to the .lrianufacture of a combined reflector and shade, chimney, or globe; and consists in forming the'chimney or globe with a projecting annular fold or flan gelike projection, which is contracted at the line of draft, so as to protect the silvered or 0th; erwise-prepared reflecting-surface from external injury and the action of the heat or smoke. I will now proceed to describe my invention, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may make and use the same.
In the drawing, A indicates achimney or globe, flared above, so'as to obtain a reflecting-surface, a, and. contracted or again drawn in to the line from'whence the flare started,
' so as to form an annular fold or circular pocket, which stands beyond the draft of the chimney. The lower portion of the article may then take the form of a globe or ordinary chimney, according to circumstances. Theinside surface of fold a is then silvered by the' Drayton or any other of the well-known ,pro-, cesses, and a shade and reflector thus-obtained which is not liable to be scratched or defaced, as is the case where the silvering is on the'exterior surface of a globe or chimney, and which is not affected by the heat or smoke, as will often occur when the silvering is'applied onthe inner surface of the general form of chimneys.
My chimney can be cleaned without difficulty, if ordinary care is taken.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by. Letters Patcut, isv The chimney or globe having an annular fold which projects beyond the line of draft,
and is coated on its inner surface to produce a combined shade and reflector, substantiallyas specified.
