SIIGLE BLOW TUBULAR RIVET HEADER Fi led July 2, 1928 i 14* ,w if 1 0 INVENTOR jorhuza J St. Pierre fab ATTORNE;
Patented Oct. 8, 1929 UNITED STATES FORTUNA J". ST. PIERRE, F WOODBURY, CONNECTICUT SINGLE-BLOW TUBULAR-RIVET HEADER Application filed July 2, 1928.
This invention relates to machines for making tubular rivets from solid wire blanks, and more particularly to a machine of this nature which will produce such a rivet on each stroke thereof.
The objects of this invention are to provide a rivet heading machine of the above nature which will be simple in construction, ineX pensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, and very efficient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view there have been illustrated on the accompanying drawings two forms in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.
Fig; 1 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the rivet punch and die-holding block as they appear at the commencement of the operation of forming the tubular shank.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 1 showing the parts as they appear just after the formation of said tubular shank.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Figs. 1 and 2 showing the parts as they appear after the upsetting of the rivet head and before the rivet has been ejected.
Fig. 4 is a side view partly in section of the tubular rivet produced by the machine shown in Figs. 1 to 3.
Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective ,views respectively of a modified form of split rivet and rod member for splitting the shank thereof.
In the manufacture of bolts and rivets having tubular shanks it has been customary in the past to upset the head in one machine and to drill in the shank in a separate machine.
By means of the present invention a single machine has been provided which will perform both of the above-mentioned operations at a single stroke of a punch. This has been accomplished by holding the rivet shank within a tubular passage in the punch and forcing a reduced pin thereunto prior to the upsetting of the head on the other end of the rivet blank.
According to former methods of making tubular rivets it generally required three drilling machines to feed a sufiicient number of tubular blanks to keep up with the produc- 50 tion of, a single rivet header. The present Serial No. 289,702.
invention eliminates all drilling operations and consequently results in a substantial sav ing in labor and drill expense.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates a portion of the reciprocating gate member of a rivet heading machine, said gate member having a horizontal cylindrical punch-holding recess 11 and a small knockout passage 12 communicating with said recess 11 for receiving a knock out pin 13. Fitted within the recess 11 is a cup-shaped sleeve member 14 having its open inner end 15 in contact with the base of said recess, the outer closed end of said sleeve member 14 having a central circular aperture 16 for fitting over a slidable rivet punch 17. The
punch 17 is provided intermediate its ends with a flange 18 adapted to fit within the interior of the cup-shaped sleeve member 14, said punch having a reduced rear end 19 surrounding which is a coiled spring 20. The spring 20 has one end in contact with the flange 18 and its other end engages a washer 21 seated on the bottom of'the recess 11.
The washer 21 is provided with a central stepped aperture 22 in its base the enlarged portion of said stepped aperture forming a seat for a head 23 of a rod member 24, the latter being adapted to slide within a tubular passage in the interior of the punch 17 and having a slightly tapered reduced shankpiercing pin 25 on its outer end.
In order to upset the head upon the rivet,
I provision is made of a cylindrical anvil member 26 located within a stationary die block 27. The anvil member 26 has a spherical recess 28 in its outer face in alinement with the rod member 24.
In' operation, after a wire blank 29 has been inserted into the tubular passage in the punch 17 the gate member will be moved to the left as shown in Fig. 1 by the usual mechanism, not shown. The pin 25 on the end of the rod member 24 will then come into engagement with the inner end of the wire blank 29 and will force said blank ahead of it until its outer end rests in the spherical heading recess 28 in the anvil 26. As the gate continues to move to the left, the pin 25 will be forced into the shank of the wire blank 29, the head 23 of the rod member 24 being firmly seated in the bottom of the gate recess 11.
As the gate continues to move toward the left, the punch 17 will slide into the sleeve member 14: against the compression of the spring 20 until the reduced section 19 of said punch strikes the washer 21 in the bottom of the recess 11. The outer endof the wire blank 29 will then be forced into the heading recess 28 and will be upset to form the head 30 of the rivet, the completed rivet being shown in Fig. 4. On the return movement of the gate 10 the completed rivet will be thrown out of the punch 18 by the ejector 13.
Fig. 5 represents a modified form of rivet having a split shank 30 which may be produced in the same machine merely by substituting a rod member 31 having a wedgeshaped end 32 for the rod member 24 previously described. It will be understood, however, that the application of the machine is not limited to the production of the rivets shown in Figs. 4 and 5, but various other forms may be made therein using other suitable heading tools, within the spirit of the invention.
IVhile there have been disclosed in this specification two forms in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosures but I may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
