PAUL F. SHIVERS, OF WALBASH', INDIANA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,. TO MINNEAPOLIS-HONEYWELL REGULATOR COMPANY, OF MINNEAPOLTS, MINNESOTA,
' rLUm-rUEL-mmnim common Application filed May 7, 1927. Serial No. 189,482.
main lead lines and T indicates a room thermostat and/or other common mechanism for controlling flow of current to wire 12. Connected with wire 12 is the leaf 13 of a warp switch W which is normally held in contact with terminal 14,-against the bias of spring 15 by the bi-metallic blade 16 of the warp switch, said blade being electrically insulated from leaf 13. I
Electrically connected-to blade 16 is one end of the heating coil 17 of the warp switch WV, the opposite end of said heating c011 being connected by a wire 18' with terminal 14 and with a terminal 19 in the'hot end of a mercury tube circuit breaker 20 which is part of a combustion control device C sensitive to combustion conditions adjacent the burner;
Paired with terminal 19 is a terminal 21 which is electrically connected to a terminal 22 in the cold end of breaker 20, and to blade 25 with the stator 26 of a supplemental valve motor YM, said stator being connected by" wire 27 to a wire 28 which is connected to lead 10. 1 t,
The rotor of valve motor VM is connected by areducing train of gears 29 to a plunger 30 which opens and closes fuel valve 31 which is in the fuel supply line Plunger 30 is biased tovalve-closing position, against the rotor of motor VM, by a spring 32. p
Connected to plunger 30 is a pivoted carrier 40 upon which are supported two mercury tube circuit breakers 41 and 42, the arrangement being such that whenthe fuel valve is closed both circuit breakers will be. in open position.
Circuit breaker 41 comprises two terminals 43 and 44, terminal 44 being connected to wire 12 and terminal 43 being connected by wire 45 with the fuel motor M, said vfuel motor being also connected through wire'28- to lead 10. i
Circuit breaker 42 comprises two terminals 52 and 53. Terminal 52 is connected by wire 54 with wire 25 and therefore with stator 26 and terminal 24 of combustion control C.
Terminal 53 is connected byjwirew 55with wire 23 and thereforefwith terminals 21 and 22 of combustion control/C" afn'l "withblade 16 of switch W. I
Electrical ignition mte'arlisj'fcomprises, in the present diagram, sparking-means and electrical pilot gas valve 61jwh'ich are connected by wire 62 with lead 10 and by wire 63 with terminal 64 of a mercury tube 65 on the pivoted carrier 66 of the ignition circuit breaker IS. s
1 Carrier 66 is biased to circuit-opening position and this bias is time-controlled by the dash-potiD. Carrier 66ismoved to circuitclosing position by a one-way driving conneotion 67 carried by plunger 30. Paired with terminal 64 is a terminal 68 which is connected by wire 69 with wire. 12 or in any other suitablemanner'to lead 'll 1 The operation is as-follows: v The parts are shown in cold position. Upon call forheat by thermostat T the ignition mechanism is immediately energized motor, whereupon delivery of fuel isstarted.
Shifting of circuit breaker 42 to closed position provides for'the-supplemental motor a maintaining circuit 11T-12-13-"14e 2Z28 10, thus making thesupplemental 'tablished to energize the supplemental valve motor independent of the cold side of the combustion control C.
Within a predetermined time'the ignition circuit breaker IS moves to open position, thereby breaking the ignition circuit.- If
proper ignition has occurred at the burner,
within this time, combustion control C will be moved to its hot position, thus breaking circuit at 2224 and making circuit at 19-21. Thereupon the circuit 11T12 13-141819212355-5352 5l 252627- 2810 is established to maintain the valve motor in actuated position but shunting out the heating coil 17 If initial ignition does not take place with in the time limit of the ignition circuitbreaker IS, coil 17 will become heated and will warp blade 16 away from leaf 13 to permit a break at 1314: so that spring 31 may return the fuel valve and breakers 4:1 and 4:2 to normal, thus deenergizingthe fuel motor, and throwing the apparatus out of commission until manually reset. If combustion ceases for any cause while the room thermostat T is closed,
the combustion control will return to cold position, thereupon reestablishing the circuit through the heating coil 17, whereupon said heating coil will serve to cause a break at 1314 andthe fuel motor will be 'de-energized and circuit breakers4'1, 42 and 65 will be returned .to normal. I
c If, for any reason, the combustion control fails to roperly respond to heat at the burner, or if terminals 19 and 21 have been improperly connected when the combustion control is in cold osition, flow of current through the suppl determined time will heat coil 17 and cause a break at 13-14 so that the apparatus will be put out of commission until manually reset.
The details of construction of the fuel valve form the subject matter of my co-pending application Serial No. 111,154. I
