My invention relates to cokeoven apparatus and particularly to means i'or indicating the condition or position ot movable devices associated with eolie ovens.
An object of my invention is to provide simple and eiiiective means for signalling or indicating the position or condition of Inovable devices that are invisible from the location of the signalling devices.
A :further object ot' my invention is to provide means visible on one side of a coke oven battery 'for indicating the position of a door or other apparatus on the other side of the battery.
A still further object of my invention is to p1 ovide means adjacent the pusher door of a coke oven for indicating whether the door on the coke side of the oven is in its open or its closed position. n
In the operation of coke ovens, it is essential that, before the pusher ram operates to remove the iinished coke fronra coke oven, the operator be certain that the door on the coke side of the battery has been removed in order to avoid the damage to the oven structure that would result in case the door is broken from its astenings upon the pushing of the oven. It has been the practice tor each of the operators of the door machines on. opposite sides of the battery to rely upon the others following a similar schedule both as to time and as to the order in which the ovens are pushed. Mistakes or delays have resulted in vovens being pushed before the doors on the collie side have been removed.
In accordance with the present invention, means are provided for indicating to the operator of the 'pusher ram whether or not the door on the coke side of any particular oven is in its open or its closed position. The indicating means may be operated either automatically upon opening the door or it may be operated manually, depending upon the type or' signalling device that is employed.
Such signalling devices may be either mechanical or electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic, regardless of the specific character of the indicating device that is employed. Light reflections may also be employed. The operator may cause the ram to push the ovens 1928. Serial No. 258,833.
with complete assurance that the coke side door hasbeen removed and in case the signalling devices are arranged for such purpose, he may be informed also as to Whether or not the coke guide is in position to transmit the coke to the quenching car.

Referring particularlyto Fig. 1, a coke oven battery l comprises a series of coke ovens having oven chambers 2, through one of which the sectional view is taken'. The battery is provided with a top 3 having rails Each oven chamber 2 is provided at its respective ends with detachable doors 8 and 9 that are removed when the coal in the oven has been completely colied. The doors 8 and 9 are located between the usual buckstays 10 that retain the side walls of the battery in position. rllhe pusher side door 8 is usually removed by a door machine located on the usual pusher machine (not shown) that operates along the side of the battery. rlhe coke side door 9 is removed by a door machine located on a car 12 that operates along the coke side of the battery.
The car 12 may also carry a coke guide 13 ior guiding the coke `from the oven into the usual quenching car. The coke is pushed by means of a pusher ram 11i, only a portion oi which is shown. A leveler bar l57 a portion ot which appears, is ordinarily carried by the pusher machine and operates to level the coal when the ovens are being charged.
As shown in Fig. l, and in enlarged detail in Fig. 2, the position ot the coke-side door 9 may be indicated to the operator ot the pusher machine by a mechanism operatively connected thereto. This mechanism comprises an arm 16 that is attached to the upper portion ot the door 9 and which is normally engaged by a lever arm 17 that is pivotally supported on a bracket 1S and is connected at its ripper end to a rod 19 that extends through a hollow pipe 2O transversely of the battery.
The hollow pipe 2O is provided at its threaded ends thereoi':I with nuts 2l whereby the pipes 20 are substituted tor the usual tie-rods for connecting the buckstays 10. 0n the pusher side of the battery, the rod 19 is provided with a vane or other indicating device 23 which may occupy either the extended position indicated by dot-and-dash lines or its retracted dotted-line position behind a shield 24 or other device7 depending upon the position of thedoor 9 and the connected mechanism.
The lever 17 is provided with a weight 25 which operates when the doei' 9 is removed to move the lever 17 into its dotted-line position (Fig. 2) and' thereby move the rod 19 to the right within the pipe 2O to expose the vane 23 to the view of the operator of the pusher machine. rllhe operator may then be certain that the door 9 has been removed and that the corresponding oven may be safely pushed to remove the completed coke therein.
Vhen the door 9 is again placed in position, the arm 16 engages the lever l? and the latter is actuated from its dotted-line position to its full-line position (Fig. 2) and the rod 19 and vane 23 are actuated to the lett, thereby indicating to the operator on the pusher side that the door 9 is in its closed position.
The foregoing operation has been described in connection with a single oven but it is typical of the operation oi' any oven in the battery. The ovens are normally pushed on a definite schedule both as to their order and the time at which the operation is carried out. lt will be appreciated that no time need be lost when the operator is ready to push the oven it the indicating device is in the position 'corresponding 'to the open position ol the colic side door.

'llhe rod i9 isV provided at its right-hand end with a member 26 which engages an angular indicating device 27 that is pivot-ally mounted at 28 on a bracket 29 that is secured to the pipe 20.

ln the arrangement shown in Figs. d, 5 and (5, a manually-operable handle 31 is connected to a rod 32 that is provided at the Icolte side ott the battery with a rocker arm 33. rlhe outer end or the roclier arm 33 is pivotally connected to two bell-crank levers 8d an( 35 that normally are in alineinent with the door 9 and constitute a barrier to its removal. However, when the door 9 is removed7 the operator adjusts the handle 3l irom its fullline position to its dotted-line position (Fig. and the rod 32 actuates the rocker arm 33 downward to cause the lower ends of the bell crank levers 3d and 35 to separate and thereby permit the removal ot the door 9 without any obstruction.
ln the modilication shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the arrangement is somewhat similar in principle to that ot Figs. l and 2 in that the door 9 is provided with a projecting arm 37 that is adapted to engage a lever arm 38 that is controlled as to its position by a weight. connected at 89 and is connected at its other end to a cable 49, which extends through a hollow pipe 2O and over suitable pulleys Lil and Ll2 on the eolie side of the battery, and is provided at its outer end with a weight e3. The cable i() is connected to a pivotally mounted member del, which exposes or obscures legends Gn and Gif as the case may be and thereby indicates the position of the ycoke side door 9. The device ll is of such width that only one ot the legends is visible in either of its positions. l
ln the arrangen'ient shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11, the car i6 for carrying the eolie guide may be provided with the usual trolleys 47 The lever arm 38 is pivotally for engaging the trolley Wires 48 and, in addition, with a movable contact device 49 for controlling the circuits of electric lamps 50, respectively mounted adjacent the coke side door. The illumination of one of the' lamps 5() through a circuit which comprises conductors 5l and 52 in an insulated conduit 53 indicates that the coke side door has been removed and that the coke guide is in alinement with the corresponding oven. The operator is thus informed that he may safely proceed with the pushing of the oven.
In the modification shown in Fig. 12, amanually-operable lever 55 operates a rod 56 through a hollow pipe 2O to control the position of a movable contact member 574 which opens or closes the circuit of an electrical signalling device, such, for example, as an electric bell 58. The contact member 57 may also control the circuit of the Velectric motor for operating the pusher ram. l
It will be apparent from the foregoing descriptions of the various forms of my invention that coke oven batteries embodying one or more forms of the signalling devices may be operated expeditiously Without danger of damage that might otherwise be caused by attempting to push an oven before the coke side door was removed. Other modifications may occur to those skilled in the art relating to the construction and operation of coke oven batteries and it is understood that my invention is not limited to the specific examples shown and described.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a battery of horizontal coke ovens, a removable door on one side of said battery and means comprising a signal device on the other side of the battery for indicating the position of said door.
2. The combination with a coke oven having a removable door at each end thereof, of an indicating device adjacent one of said doors and operatively connected to the other of said doors to indicate the latter doors position.
3. The combination with a coke oven having a door at each end thereof, of an indicating device adjacent one of said doors, and means for operating said indicating device in accordance with the position of the other door. l
4. In a battery of horizontal coke ovens, doors for each of said ovens on opposite sides of the battery, and means adjacent the pusher side door and operatively connected to the coke side door for indicating the position of the latter door. Y
5. In a batteryfof horizontal coke ovens, frame members on opposite sides thereof, hollow members for connecting said frame members, a movable device on one side of said battery, a signal device on the other side of said battery, and means within one of said hollow members for controlling said signal device to indicate a predetermined position of said movable device.
6. In a battery of horizontal coke ovens frame members on opposite sides thereof, hollow members for connecting said frame members, a movable device on one side of said battery, a signal device on the other side of said battery, and means comprising a member movable within one of said hollow members for controlling said signal device to indicate apredetermined position of said movable device.
7. In a battery of horizontal coke ovens, frame members on opposite sides thereof, hollow members for connecting said frame members, removable doors at the respective ends of each oven on opposite sides of the battery, a movable device adjacent each pusher side door, and means extending through said hollow members and operatively connected to the coke lside doors for controlling the position of said devices according as the corresponding coke side door is in its open or its closed position.
