nection with such machines; and this appli-' cation is a division of my'previously filed application for nut machines, Serial No. 113,663,
filed June 1, 1926. b
An object of this invention is to provide an improved nut finishing mechanism fo machines of the type described. Q
A further object is to provide a machine of the character described ofsuch construction and arrangement that an improved product will be obtained by its use.
A still further object is to provide a machine which is rugged in construction, reliable in operation and simple to manufacture and assemble.
These .and other objects which will be apparent. to those skilled in this particular art are attained by the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a nut making machine provided with a nut blank finishing mechanism constructed in accordance with one embodiment of this invention and Fig. 2 is a plan view of a roller die forming a part of the finishing mechanism illustrated in Fig. 1.
In the drawing, the particular embodiment of this invention which has been chosen for the purposes of illustration is shown in connection with a portion of a nut making machine having the usual plunger head 5 provided with the usual shearingand cutting punches which cooperate with associated dies to form nut blanks from a continuous rod, bar, or the like, fed into the machine by the usual As illustrated, an ordinary type of transfer chute 6 is employed for delivering nut blanks from a cutting or blanking die (not shown) in a position to be fed to a crowning die 7 from which it is transferred to a finishing mechanism for finishing the-nut blank, and the present invention is more particularly concerned with the provision of mechanism for I producinga nut blank having a more perfectly finished surface than has heretofore been possible with machines of this type.
The plunger head 5 is provided with the H usual crowning punch 8 cooperating with the crowning or chamfering die 7 to .crown the nuts, and a finishing punch 9 is provided for forcingthe crowned blanks through the associated finishing mechanism.
As illustrated, the finishing mechanism in eludes as a part thereof, a finishing die10 of standard construction, through which the nuts are forced byv the punch 9. After passing through the die 10 the blanks travel through a conveying tube 11 to a second finishing die 12 through which the nuts are forced prior to-beingejected from the machine. The particular form of die which has been chosen for the purposes of illustration is a roller die consisting of a casing 13 securely clamped to the bottom-of the machine bed by clamping bolts 14 of any desired form. Roller housings 15 are mounted within the casing for horizontal sliding movement there. in and a die roller 16 is mounted in each roller housing. Clamping and adjusting screws 17 are threaded through the end walls of the easing and engage the outer face of each roller housing for so positioning the roller housings that the rollers 16 are pressed into contact in such a way that a die opening 18, formed by the particular shape of the roller surfaces, of
proper cross section, is provided and. located directly below the lower outlet opening of the conveyor tube 11 and in axial alignment therewith.
It willbe apparent that operation of the finishing punch 9 forces the nut blanks.
through the finishing die 10 and downwardly into the collecting tube 11. is full of nut blanks, further operation of the When the latter punch 9 presses upon the blanks in the tube f 11 so as to force them out of the lower end thereof and through the die opening formed between the rollers 16. Nut blanks subjected to such an action are provided with unusually fine surfaces having a relatively high polish.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination in a nut making machine of finishing mechanism including a finishing die, a punch for forcing nut blanks therethrough, a roller die in alignment with said finishing die and a tube for. conveying blanks forced through said finishing die to said roller die under impulse of said punch.
In testimonv whereof, I have hereunto subscribed I'ny name this 11th day of January, 1928.
, GEORGE s. SMITH.
