This invention relates to improvements in sion of the spring 18 without causing said sound reproducing machines of the discgears to disengage with each other and so as record type and has for its object to provide not to interfere with their co-operation; To
improved means whereby the turn-table may tinechanically feed the friction wheel 2 on 5 be driven by means of the governor controlled its shaft 4 as the turn-tablel rotates, a car? spring motor at uniformly increasing anguriage l iis provided, which comprises a body lar speed,so that thelinear speed of the record member carrying a nut member 16 and surface relative to the reproducingneedle is fork member 17. Said body member is proconstant. vided with bosses 18, 19 and loosely mounted Theinventlon is illustrated in the accom on a 'gulderod 2O and feed screw 21 to allow 6 panymg drawings in which: longitudinal movement thereon. Said sector gear meshes with a pinion 37 which is fixed at the under side of the top cover 11 to the lower end of a shaft 38 upwardly extending through said top cover and provided with a handle 89 on the upper end thereof, as clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 2, so that the carriage may be shifted by rotating said handle when the nut member 16 is disengaged with the feed screw 21. In order to indicate the position of the friction wheel 2 relating to the turntable 1, anindex 4-0 is fired to the shaft 38 of the handle 39 t co-operate with a dialplate 41. In order to indicate the relative positions of the friction wheel 2 and the tip of the-reproducing needle on the record, an index 2 is fixed to the sound tube 43 to cooperate with a dial plate 44 fixed to the upper side of the top cover ll, the graduation being preferably made in such a manner that both indications are ust the same when the friction wheel is positioned ust below the wheel is driven from. the spring'motor. at
tip of the reproducing needle on the record. i
In operation, the turn-table 1 is driven by the friction wheel 2 which is yieldingly' engaged with the under side' of said turn-table under proper pressure at all tnnes on account of themeans for supporting said friction a certain constant speed; i
For use of an ordinary record, the turntable 1 may be. driven at a certain constant angular velocity by locating the friction wheel 2 on the blank portion of the feed screw 21 toward its center.
With the arrangement of'parts above described, a re aroducing disc record having a greater capacity than ordinary records of the same dimensions, in which those portions or undulations of the spiral sound grooves formed by sounds of equal duration are of substantially equal length without regard to the position thereof in the sound groove, may be effectively reproduced, and also ordinary records may be effectively reproduced, if desired.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to helperformed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In. a machine for reproducing sound, a turn-table, a motor driven shaft, a friction drive wheel for the turn-table slidably mounted on said shaft and rotating therewith, motor driven intermeshing gears one of which is carried by said shaft, a supporting frame for said shaft, pins arranged intouchpoint of pitch circles of said gears and supporting the frame for pivotal movement whereby to allow a swinging movement of said frame on said pins while maintaining the gears in mesh, and means for feeding said friction wheel axially along the motor driven shaft during turning movement of the turn-table.
2. A machine for reproducing sound as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that said feeding means comprises a feed screw operated by the turn table, a carriage including a body member movable on the feed screw, a member carried by said body member engag= ing the friction wheel, anda nut member engaging said feed screw, said nut member being disengaged from saidscrew upon depression of the friction wheel below normal operative position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
