JOSEPH F. JosErT AND JosIAH Ross, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORLASSIGNOES;
TO'sAID JOSEPH F. "JOsET IMPRovEMENT VINv PAPER-BAG MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,019, dated February 1,'1876; application filed March 31, 1875.
To all 'whom t mag/concern:
Be it known that we,JosE1 HlF. JosE'r'r and JOsIAH Ross, both of the city of Bualo,`
in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements lin Paper-Bag Machines, of which the.
' clearly hereinafter shown.
The second part of our invention consists in the combination of a vertically adjustable roller head or frame with the severing device and an adjustable gear-wheel, so that rollers of various sizes may be used.
The third part of our invention consists in the combination ot' the creasing-rollers and creasing-wheels, when inade adjustable horizontally and vertically.
The fourth part of our invention consists of an adjustable forming-roller, made adjustable in the direction of its length, so as to answer for bags of different widths.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of the .machine complete; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same; Fig. 3, a side view of the severing-rollers, and Fig. 4 an end view.
A represents the frame 'of the machine; B, the paper-roll and roll of paper; C, the creasing-roller, over which the paper passes beneath thecreasing-wheels D, which are made adjustable vertically, or nearly so, by means of the thumb screws and springs d, and horizontally on the shaft by means of the set-screws d'. E represents the adjustable forming-roller. It is made in two parts, one part consisting of a cylinder having a portion of smaller diameter, so as to allow the other portion-a sleeve or barrel-to slide over it'like the tubes of a telescope, so that its length may be increased or shortened. It is adjusted and held when set to the length desired by meansof the bolt or set-screw f. f1 represents the arms for holding it to the shaft f2, upon which they are adjusted .horizontally bythe set-screwsff. The arms fl are arranged so as to slide in -the parts f4, .and allow the pressure of the'roller on the paper to be regulated by means ofthe slots and set-screws g. G represents the two friction rollers. They are held within the frame g1, which is fastened by set-screws g2 to the supports g3, so that the frame g1 may be e.
made to incline atan angle, more or less, from the horizontal line of the machine-bed, and thereby regulate the friction upon the paper as it is drawn through it by th'efeed-rollers H. i h is a set-screw for regulating th'e pressure of said rollers.v The feed-rollers are geared with the severing-rollers by means ofthe gearing T, U, V, W,a'nd X. I and J are the severing-rollers. The lower one is set back of the upper,l one, as shown, so that the paper will lie close to it while the cutting device is separating it. K K are set-screws for regulatin g the distance of the severing-rollers from each other, and, consequently, their pressure on the paper. The upper roller I is provided with a serrated bar, '13. j on roller J is a groove,
intov which the bar i strikes when dividing the paper. The point at vwhich the bar t shall enter the Agroove j is regulated by the arm L, which is keyed rigidly to the shaft of roller I. The wheel X, being arranged to turn easily on said shaft, allows it to be connected to the arm L by means of a set-screw, M, passing through the slotm in said wheel, by which operation it is obvious the said adjustment may be made. N represents the verticallyadjustable frame for supporting the severingrollers. It is connected to the frame A by the slide P, and is adjusted by the thumb-screw R. (Shown in dotted lines, Fig.l.) The object of the frame N is to allow the use of rollers of different sizes. For large rollers its position would be lower than for small rollers. The wheel V is made movable, so that it can be adjusted and put into gear with the other wheels, so as to connect all together, when the position of the frame N is changed.
What we claim as our invention is as follows:
1. The combination of the rollers I J, arm L, 4. The forming-roller E, consisting ot' three set-screw M, and wheel X, arranged substanparts-a cylinder, sleeve, and setscreW,f-al1 tially as and for the purpose described. combined and arranged substantially as and 2. The combination of the frame N, severfor the purposes described. ing-rollers I J, adjustable Wheel V, and the frame-adjusting device E, as and for the pur- JOSEPH F. J OVSETT. poses described. p JOSIAH ROSS.
3. The adjustable creasing-wheels D, set- Witnesses: i screws d d', in combination with the creasing- JAMES SANGSTER,
roller C, as and for the purposes specified. A. N. SAMUELS.
