Description

Sept. 24, 1929. E. c. RAMAGE. JR
SECTIONAL BOILER HEADER Filed Oct. 18, 1927 mwNw INVENTOR 6. F4/W/IQE'W ATTORNEY l atente d Sept. 24, 1929 UNITED STATES EDWIN C. RAMAGE, 33., OF CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA SECTIONAL BOILER HEADER Application filed October 18, 1927,
My invention relates to steam boilers, and more particularly to improvements in sectional boiler headers.
The invention provides an air-tight joint or seal between the contacting faces of boiler header sections or units whereby the passage of air between the header sections or units is obviated.
Further the invention contemplates a plurality of co-acting header sections having mating surfaces which produce a seal between the opposed faces of each two adjacent sections.
With the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind the invention consists in the combination of elements, constructions and arrangement of parts and operations to be hereinafter specifically referred to, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a boiler embodying my improvements,
Figure 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4: is a perspective of one of the header sections or units. a Referring to the invention in detail a boiler header formed from a plurality of sinuous or serpentine sections or'units is provided, the latter being rectangular in cross section and having interfitt-ing engagement as illustrated in Figure 2.
To provide an air-tight fit between these header sections or units and hence preclude the passage of air between the same the opposed faces thereof are formed with spaced ribs 6 which extend the entire length of the sections. Longitudinal grooves 7 also extending the entire length of the sections are formed in the opposed faces of the latter to receive the ribs 6. These ribs and grooves of each section are arranged in staggered relation so that substantially the entire surface of the abutting faces interfit to produce an air seal therebetween.
These ribs in this instance are illustrated as substantially T-shaped and the grooves Serial No. 226,951.
correspondingly shaped to receive the same. This is desirable so that a maximum number of right angular surfaces will be produced which render it ditlicult or practically impossible for any air to pass between the header sections. However these ribs and grooves may be of any desirable configuration that will produce an etlicient seal or air tight joint between the sections.
I claim:
1. In combination a plurality of vertically extending boiler headers whose side faces are provided with alternate grooves and ribs having interfitting engagement to produce an air seal between the opposed faces of the headers.
2. In combination, a pair of parallel tubular boiler headers having their opposed faces arranged in abutting relation, and interfitting ribs extending longitudinally of the opposite faces of the headers and projecting laterally therefrom and having interfitting engagement to produce an irregular joint between the two headers to preclude the passage of air therebetween.
Signed at Charleston in the county of Kanawha and State of lVest Virginia this 11th day of October, A. D. 1927.
