rIhis invention relates to improvements in sewing machines.
An object of the invention is to provide a cutting device for use in connection with a sewing machine, and improved means for operating said device automatically and as an incident to operation of themachine.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in addition to the cutting device, equipment for feeding material through the stitching mechanism of the machine.
Other objects will appear from the following description, reference-being made to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the invention applied to a sewing machine.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
Fig. 3 is a side elevationof a modified form of the invention comprising a cutter and means. for imparting rocking movements thereto, instead of rotary movements which are imparted to the cutter shown in Figs. 1 and 2. l
The invention is shown embodied in a sewing machine of well known type comprising a table 1, a serrated work feed plate 2, a presser foot 3, and a vertically reciprocating supporting and actuating rod .4 for the needle 5.
f The invention shown in Figs.` 1 and 2 comfeeding and cutting devices. A bracket 6 is attached to the presser foot spindle 7 and supports a rotary shaft 8. A cutter disc 9 is attached to the shaft 8 by a set screw 10 passing through the hub 11 of the cutting disc and engaging the shaft 8. The cuttino disc 9 may be adjusted along the shaft 8 for operation in any of the grooves 12 in the table 1 in order to cut the material at any selected distance from the line of stitches.
The shaft 8 has on one end a pinion 13 meshing with a pinion 14 on one end of a stud. yshaft 15, the opposite end of said stud shaft having xed thereto a pinion 16 engaged and operated successively by rows of teeth 17. The rows of teeth 17 project from a sleeve 18 rotative on a stud 19 projecting from the bracket 6. The sleeve 18 is between the needle and the upwardly and extended I am aware that the device may part of the presser foot 3 which engages the presser footspindle 7. The presser foot is provided with a transverse slot throu h which the teeth 17 project to be engaged by the material fed through the sewing machine. The moving material engaging the teeth 17 imparts intermittent rotary movements to the train of gearing described, and thereby to the cutting disc 9 with the result that said disc is operated properly to sever the material at the desired distance from the line of stitches.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig.
' 3 the gearing that is operated by the material passing the stitching mechanism is omitted, and rocking movements are imparted to the cutting disc instead of intermittent rotary movements in the same direction as above described. As shown in Fig. 3, a cutting disc 20 is mounted on a shaft 21 in a bracket 22 secured to the table 1. The cutting disc may be adjusted along the shaft 21 to operate in grooves corresponding to the grooves 12. The needle actuator 4 is equipped with a bracket 23 having an elongated slot 24 receiving a pin 25 projecting from the adjacent side of the cutting 'disc 20. v Thus, as the actuator 4 reciprocates vertically it will impart rocking movements to the disc 2O severing the material passing the stitching mechanism at the desired distance from the line of stitches, byV adjustment of the cutting disc on the shaft 21.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my invention is of a simple character and may be "easily applied as an accessory attachment to standard types of sewing machines. The device may be attached or removed as desired and, in use, results in a large saving of time and expense, whereas the device itself may be manufactured and installed economically. be varied in numerous particulars of construction without departure from the nature and principle of the invention.
I do not restrict myself unessentially, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a sewing machine the combination such distance being varied optionally with material feeding and stitching mechan isms, of a cutting instrument, and means operated by the material passing said mechanisms forV operating the cutting instrument 3. In a sewing machine the combination' with material feeding and stitching mechanisms, of a cutting instrument supported for turning movements, means operated by the material passing said mechanisms for imparting turning movements ,to said instrument, and means for supporting said cutting instrument for operation at' different distances from the line of stitches formed by the stitching mechanism.
4. In a sewing machine the combination with stitching mechanism, of a rotary shaft, means operated by the material being sewed for imparting intermittent rotary movements to said shaft, and a cutting disc mounted on said shaft and operative to cut the material parallel with the line of stitches.
5. In a sewing machine the combination with stitching mechanism, of a rotary shaft, means operated by the material being sewed for imparting intermittent rotary movements to said shaft, a cutting disc mounted on said shaft and operative to cut the material parallel with the line of stitches, and means for securing said cutting disc on the shaft at different distances from the line of stitches.

In a sewing. machine the combination with material feeding and stitch forming mechanisms, of a bracket, a shaft mounted in said bracket for turning movements, gearing operated by the material passing said mechanisms for turning said shaft intermittently in one direction during vmovement of the material from the stitch forming mechanism, a cutting disc mounted on said shaft, and means for securing the cutting disc to the shaft at dilferent distances from the Stitch forming mechanism.
10.l In a sewing machine, the combination with material feeding mechanism, a presser foot spindle, a presser foot supported by said spindle, an actuating rod, and a n'eedle supported by the actuating rod, of a cutting disc, and mechanism between 'the presser foot and the disc operated by the material moved by the feeding mechanism for rotating said disc.

In a sewing machine, the combination with material feeding mechanism, a presser foot spindle, a presser foot supported by said spindle` an actuating rod, and a needle supported by the actuating rod, of a cutting disc, mechanism between the presser foot and the disc operated by the material moved by the feeding mechanism for rotating said disc, and means for supporting the disc for opera-` tion at different distances from the needle and presser foot.
