OIL CAN Filed Aug. 5, 1926 I I I glwuentoz,
Patented Sept. 17, 1929 UNITED STATES BURT NEULON PIERCE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
OILOAN Application filed August 5,1926." Serial No. 127,415.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cans having detachable nozzles and more particularly to cans especially adapted to be used for shipping oil the object being to provide an oil can with a reversible nozzle so mounted on the can that it can be used in the ordinary manner or can be removed and reversed so that the nozzle will be within the can for shipping purposes.
Another object of my invention is to provide an oil can in which the nozzle carries two caps, one of the caps being adapted to screw on the nipple of the can in order to hold the nozzle extended and when in this position, the other cap forms a drain cup the second cap being adapted to screw on the nipple when the nozzle is forced within the can so as to form a closure for the can.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an oil can constructed in accordance with my invention; v
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is an elevation partly in section showing the nozzle in position to be used for dispensing the contents of the can. I
In the drawing 1 indicates the body of a can which may be of any shape desired but is herein shown rectangular in cross section having a threaded nipple 2 extending from the top thereof. The can is preferably formed of flexible walls so that by squeezing the same, the contents will be forced out and while I have shown a particular manner of fastening the nipple to the top of the can, it is, of course, understood that this is immaterial as my invention consists broadly in providing a can with a nipple in connection with the other features which will be hereinafter described which enables the can to be shipped with the nozzle within the same.
My improved construction of nozzle comprises a pair of caps 3 and 4: which are threaded and adapted to fit the nipple 2, the I L cap 3 having the end of a nozzle 5 secured thereto which extends through the cap 4 and is secured thereto so that the caps are in spacedrelation as clearly shown, the cap 3 being adapted to carry a washer 6 to engage the end of the nipple in order to form a tight joint when the nozzle is in the position shown in Figure 3.
Disposed within the cap 4: is a conical washer 7 which. is adapted to engage the beveled edge 8 of the end of the nipple when the cap at is screwed inposition on the nozzle so as to form a tight closure for the can when the nozzle is inserted within the same as shown in Figure 2. The end of the nozzle is threaded and carries a cap 9 forming a closure for the end of the nozzle so that when the nozzle is in position within the can 7 cans so that the nozzle will be within the can i for shipping purposes, but prior to my invention it was customary to have thenozzle reversible within the cap and therefore I do not claim to be the first in the art toprovide a reversible nozzle, as my invention consists in providing a nozzle with a pair of caps, either one of which is capable of being screwed into position on the nipple of a can.
shipping purposes and held in that position so as to close the can against leakage.
What I claim is:
1. An oil can having a threaded nipple and a nozzle provided with a threaded end having a cap arranged thereon for closing the discharge end thereof, a pair of caps surrounding the other end of said nozzle concentric with the axis thereof, said caps being arranged in reverse position in respect to one another and adapted to be screwed respectively onto said nipple for holding said nozzle either in extended position or within the can.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an oil can having an externally threaded nipple and a tapering nozzle provided with a threaded end having a capniounted thereon for closing the discharge end thereof, a pair of internally threaded caps arranged in I6 verse position and secured around the larger end of said nozzle, each cap being provided with a washer adapted to respectively engage the end oii the nipple when the nozzle is arranged within the can or in extended position to form an oil-tight joint between the respective caps and the nipple of the can.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
BURT NEULON PIERCE.
