Description

UNITED STAT-Es PAIrEN'I OFFICE.
HENRY TWITOHELL AND GEORGE E. PARSONS, OF PULASKI, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SNOW-FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Lettere Patent No. 172,799, dated January 25, 187B; application filed October 6, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY TwITcHELL and GEORGE E. PARsoNs, of Pulaski, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have-invented a new andlmproved Snow- Plow; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a front View.
The invention relates to that well-known class of snow-plows in which an inclined plane is used to raise the snow, side colters to sever it from the mass on each side, and a moldboard or wedge at the head of the inclined plane to divide and force the snow laterally to some distance beyond the track.
The means whichv we have invented,l and which constitute a decided improvement in this special class of snow-plows, will irst be fully described, and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
A is the inclined plane; B B, the side colters, and O the snow-ejector.
We iind that where the snow on the track is cut thoroughly from the mass on each side the ultimate work is much better done tha under ordinary circumstances.
For this purpose we usev bow-plates or top cutters D D, which also serve to form supporting-arches to the colter side plates, preventing themfrom being bent outwardly, and retaining them always in their proper relative position. r)These are all strengthened and reenforced by a projecting brace, E, attached at oneend to the mold-board or ejector O and to the bow-plates D.
The front edges F of the side colters B are inclined in a forward direction in respect to the base of the inclined apron A, so as to cause the colters to enter the snow, for dividing the same preparatory to being elevated up the inclined plane by the forward movement of the l snow from being thrown off laterally until it reaches the double mold-board or divider O.
The divider and snow-ejector O has a projecting flange, c, which prevents the action of the force (tending to throw the snow) from being exerted in an upward direction, and compels the mass of snow to shoot out in a horizontal direction.
In practice, with this improvement a snowplow is found to eject the snow over and beyond the adjacent track.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The snow-plow having the inclined shovellicor A, widened under the side guides, the forwardly and laterally curved overhanging side guides c, meeting each other at a sharp angle centrally, and extending laterally beyond said iioor, the center cutter, side cutters B, bows D, and center brace E, constructed and arranged as shown and described.
HENRY TWITCHELL. GEORGE E. PARSONS.
