UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN V. SLUSSER, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.-
IMPROVEMENT m SIGNAL HEAD-LIGHTS FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Specification formingipart of Letters Patent No. 172,790, dated January 25, 1876 application filed September 2 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern; Be it known that I, JOHN V. SLUssER, of Louisville, in the county of 'Jefl'ersonand State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Locomotive Head-Light, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 rep-v resents a front view,"and Fig. 2 a top view,
partly in section, of my improved locomotive head-light.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of invention is to combine the signal-lights with the head-lamp of the 1ocomotive, so that they receive their light from the burner of the head-lamp, facilitate the putting out of signals by being immediately available whenrequired, and produce a saving in lanterns and oil.
My invention consists in the'arrangement of one or more short tubes applied to the head-light of a locomotive, said tubes to be fitted with movable caps with colored glass for signals.
In the drawing, represents the head-lamp,
carried in front of locomotive-engines, which is provided at its front part with one or more tubes, B, of tin or other suitable material,
which projects over the glass cover of the lamp, so ,as to receive their light from the burner of the same.
The tubes B are made with movable caps G, which are attached by slot and lug, springs or otherwise, andmay be changed from solid caps to caps with pieces of glass of different colors, corresponding to the signals prescribed.
The engineer can at any time, on receiving orders on the road, change without delay the JOHN V. SLUSSER.
