Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,767, dated January 25, 1876; application filed December 13, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY F. PATTON, of Appleton, Outagamie county, State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Butter-Gutters, of which the following is a full description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is anend view.

It is necessary for retail dealers to remove small quantities of butter from firkins, crooks, and other packages, and in so doing the arti cle is often broken into quite small pieces, and is removed with considerable difficulty, especially in cold weather.

4 The object of this invention is to construct a device by the use of which a small quantity of butter, lard, or other similar article, can be easily taken from its package in good shape, which I accomplish by making a receptacle which is open at the top and bottom, and can be pushed down into the article, and by providing such receptacle with a cutter operated from above, to cut off, at the bottom of the device, the butter or other article therein.

In thedrawings, a b 0 represent the three sides of my receptacle, which is open at the top and bottom. These parts are made of strong sheet metal. The front a is circular; the sides I) care straight. at is permanently secured to c. As shown, b is hinged to c, the pintle e passing loosely through the knuckles of the hinge, and the front edge of b snaps over the edge ofa, but so that it can be readily opened.

d is an arm or lever, preferably made of a thin piece of steel. It is pivoted to a ata point, a, equally distant from the corners and from the center of the lower edge of a, which is cut on a circle.

f is a knife or cutter; it may be three-cornered or flat. It is pivoted at one end, 9, in the pintle e, and at the other end It in the le ver 61, and so that it can pass below and under the sides of the device. If made fiat it will be well to pivot it eccentrically.

m is a handle, firmly secured to the upper edge of a. As shown, the other end of this handle passes over the pintle e and rests upon a washer, while a pin, 1", prevents the pintle from dropping down.

In use, the knife or cutter is to be carried over to one side, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2; then, by pressing on the handle, the device can be pushed down into the butter or other article until the receptacle is full, or only partly full, if desired; then, by means of the lever d, the knife can be carried over to the other side of the device, cutting its way through the butter, andsevering that in the receptacle from its connection with the body of the butter in the package; then the device can be withdrawn, and all within the walls a b 0 will be withdrawn, at the same time remaining within a b c, and can be removed therefrom in solid form by opening the side I).

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. The case a b c, of the form described, the part I) being hinged at one edge to standard 9, adapted to be fastened at the other to the plate a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The receptacle a b 0, having a hinged side, I), in combination with a cutte1',f, and lever d, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
