The object of the invention is to provide a stand for electric pressing irons and like implements inwhich is incorporated a concircuit on the iron or other device when resting upon the stand and when it has attained a predetermined temperature; to provide in a ,device of this kind regulating means so that the controlling means may be m set or adjusted to operate at a particular 1 and to provide a construction which is equipped with both manual and automatic cut-outs in addition to the temperature cutout.
With this object in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying wherein:

A circuit closer and cut-out is carried by the frame below the rest plate and is serially included in circuit with the heating element of the iron, this circuit closer comprising a fixed contact 18 and cooperating movable contact 19, the latter being carried at the extremity of a lever 20 swingingly supported on. a transverse stud carried'by the spaced 1 nected with the rest 1927. v The force arm of the lever is in the form of an abutment nose 25 disposed ,in a bifurcation 26 formed in the nose 27 of the rest late. With the heel end of the rest plate xed linear expansion of the plate due to the absorption of heat from the iron or other object resting thereon, will effect a pressure on the abutment nose 25 and the consequent elevation of the lever 20 through the medium of the resistance arm 22, the elevation of the lever 20 eflecting separation of the contacts 19 and '18, The bell crank lever, like the lever 20, has a pivotal mounting, the two bein concentric but the levers are indepen entlymovable.
The means for anchoring the heel end of the rest plate with reference to the base consists of tensile springs 28 terminall secured to a transverse bar 29, the latter eing secured to and spannin standards 30 upstanding from the base, t e springs being conlate through a small yoke plate 31 with which is engaged a pin 32 dependingfrom a tongue 33 constituting g an integral rear extension. from the rest plate. The bar 29 being fixed with reference to the base, the s rings tend to draw the rest plate rearwar ly, the movement in this direction being limited by the cooperating stops of which one consists of-a screw 34 threadingly engaged with the bar 29 and the other a seat 35 carried b the tongue and engaging theterminal 0t the screw. The springs serve to kee the two stops in engagement and there ore fix the position of the heel end of the rest plate with reference to the base and the rest plate in expanding changes its position on the base or frame with reference to the nose end, the transverse rollers 11 providing for freedom of movement in expanding, despite the superosed Weight in the form of the iron carried y the stand.

the adjusting means of which consists of a transverse rod 36 slidably mounted in the head of the screw.
An indicator is provided so that the hit and miss method of adjustment of the screw 34 is avoided, the indicator consisting of a swinging pointer 37 pivotally mounted on the base plate and movable over a scale 38 and actuable through a link 39 having a pin and slot connection 40 with it, the link being pivotally mounted, as indicated at 41, on the base plate and-having a slot 42 in which the pin 32 engages.
On the under face of the base plate 15, there is'mou'nted a terminal block 43 from which a lead 44 extends, connected to the fixed contact 18 and from which a lead 45 also extends, the latter connecting with a block 46 of readily fusible material, which block has a pig tail connector 47 connecting it with the movable contact 19. The block 43 is'designed for the reception of a conventional plug 48 connected in one side only of the supply circuit, a lead 49 running from this plug to the heating element of the iron and a'lead 50 running from the plug to the main plug 51 from which a lead 52 'runsto the heating element. Thus the circuit closer comprising the contacts 19 and 18 is in series of the heating element of the iron and when they are separated the circuit on the heating element. is opened and correspondingly closed when they are in contact. I
The circuit closer is actuated by the rest plate and so is the signal which may be audible or visible but in the present embodiment is shown as an audible si nal, the same comprising a gong 53 mounteii on the base plate 15 in position to be engaged by the clapper 54 which is carried by the spring stem 55, the latter being pivotally mounted 'as indicated at 56 in a bracket 57 and spring \impellcd against a stop 58 which normally holds the clapper 54 spaced from the gong, the resiliency of the stem permitting the clapper to engage the gong, when the stem is swung in a direction away from the stop and suddenly released. The means for actuating the clapper consists of a tail exten- 81011 59 of the stem and a trip member 60 adjustably mounted on an arm 61, the trip being adjustable longitudinally of the arm by reason of the exterior threads 62 on the latter. The trip is provided with a guard plate 63 on that side which engages the tail extension 59. The arm 61 is slidably mounted in a guide bracket 64, passing slidably througha diagonal'slot 65 formed in the latter, the arm also being pivotally connected at the extremity remote from the trip with one end of a lever 66 which is pivotally mounted at the other end as indicated at 67, on the base plate and which has an operative connection with the arm 24 of the bell crank lever through a link 68. Upon movement of the bell crank lever, longitudinal movement is imparted to the arm 61, bringing the trip into engagement with the tail extension 59 of the clapper stem and the clapper is thus rocked away from the gong until the notch 69 in the arm is at the edge ofthe leaf 70 which is mounted on the bracket 64 beside the slot 65. The arm may at this time swing laterally due to the notch, leaving .the tailextension 59 free, so that the clapper may swing back toward the gong. Thus, a quick release for the clapper is provided. The arm moving laterally, also moves upwardly due to the inclination of the slot 65, so that when the arm moves longitudinally in the other direction, as when the bell crank lever rocks in areverse direction due to the cooling of the rest plate, the trip may drop in behind the tail extension preparatory to operating the clapper upon the rest plate again expanding.
The pin 71 effecting the pivotal connection between the arm 61 and the lever 66 extends through a slot 72 in the base plate 15 and below the latter has connected with it a link 73, which link has a pivotal connection with an arm of a bell crank lever 74, the latter being pivotally mounted in brackets 75 spanning aslot 76 in the base plate. The remaining arm of the bell crank lever 74 carries a weight 77, the gravital tendency of the weight tending to maintain the lever 66 and arm 61 in a position where the trip 60 is behind the tail extension 59 preparatory to engaging the latter. i
A mechanical cut-out is provided for the actuation of the circuit closer comprising the contacts 18 and 19 and this comprises a rock shaft 78 disposed transversely of and below the lever 20, the rock shaft havinga lateral lug 79 which, when the rock shaft is in one position, engages the lever 20 and thus elevates the contact 19 out of engagement with the contact 18. The rock shaft is actuated through a hand lever 80 disposed at the heel end of the stand, thishand lever being carried at the upper end of a shaft 81 rotatably mounted in the'base plate and carrying below the latter a crank 82 with which a link 83 is pivotally connected, the latter having a pivotal connection with' a crank 84 and carried by the rock shaft 78 and extending through a slot 85 formed in the base plate.
In the operation of the invention, the plug 48 is coupled with the block 43 and the plug 51 inserted in an outlet, the iron or other implement with which the leads 49 and 52 are connected being'placed on the standon the rest plate 10. As the implement heats,
its heat is transferred to the rest plate and the latter expands, engaging the abutment nose and rocking the bell crank lever of which it is a part, effecting the separation of the contacts 18 and 19 and the actuation of the signal in the manner before described. As long as the temperature of the implement remains at the desired point, the contacts l9 and 18 will be held separated, but upon dissipation of the heat and the contraction of the rest plate, they will be again brought into engagement, when the circuit on the heating element of the implement will be re-established and the temperature Will be raised until the circuit is again opened by the expansion of the rest plate. The screw 34 provides the adjustment for setting tohave the device operate at a desired temperature, while the hand lever 80 provides a cut-out for the manual actuation of the circuit closer 1918; so'that it will not be necessary to disconnect either the plugs 48 or 51 or to operate an electrical switch controlling the outlet.
Should any of the parts fail of operation, excessive heat will fuse the block 46 and thus effect the opening of the circuit at this point.
The invention provides against fire hazards in that it provides an automatic means for the control of an iron or like device when not in use and when resting upon its proper support or stand.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A device for the purlpose indicated comprising a frame, a rest p ate mounted in the frame, anchoring means for the heel end of the rest plate, and a circuit closer disposed to be engaged and actuated by the rest plate 1 frame, anchoring means for the heel end of the rest plate, said anchoring means being adjustable to vary its position relative to the frame, and a circuit closer operatively connected with the rest plate at the nose end and actuable by the latter upon linear expansion of the plate, the anchoring means consisting of a screw carried by the frame and abutting the plate, springs tensioned between the frame and indicator operatively connected with the screw.
