IMPROVEMENT IN FAUCETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 72,525, dated January 18, 1876; application filed August 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN R. TOMLINSON, of Bridgeport, in thecounty of Faireld and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Faucets, and I do hereby declare vthat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to a self-closin g faucet, in which the valve is opened by turning a spindle, and is closed by the pressure of a spring when the spindle is released; and it consists l in the combination of4 a yoke on the spindle,
a similar yoke on the valve-stem, and a ring or lilik connecting said yokes, whereby the turning ofthe spindle moves the link in a twisting direction, and causes it to pull or draw the valve-stem upward to open the valve.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view, partly in section, of my improved faucet. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
A represents the upright cylindrical valvechamber, in the bottom of which is the valveseat b, provided with an opening for the flow of the liquid, as indicated by the arrows. C is a circular valve, provided with suitable elastic packing, and attached to the lower end of a stem, D. E is a stationary circular plate, fitting in and closing the top of the valvechamber, and serving as a guide for the valvestem D, and also serving as a rest for the upper end of a spi1al.spring,f, which surrounds the valve-stem D, and has its lower end resting upon the valve C. The valve-stem D passes through the top plate E, and its lower end passes through the valve and packing, which are secured to the stem by a nut, d, in the ordinary manner. The plate E is prevented from turning by means ot' lugs c, engaging with grooves or recesses in the shell, or by any other suitable means, and the portion of the valve-stem which passes through the plate is made angular, to prevent it from turning. G is a cap, which is screwed down on the top ot' the valve-chamber, and which has an opening in its top, snrmounted by a sleeve, H. Through the sleeve H and the opening in the cap G passes a spindle, J, having a handle, i, at its upper end. On the lower end of the spindle J is a yoke, K, which may be in one piece with the spindle, or may be made separately, and attached thereto. On the upper end of the valve-stem D is a similar yoke, M. The two yokes K M are connected by a ring or link, L, which engages with the cross-bars of the yokes, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
When the spindle J is turned to the right or left the upper yoke K turns with it, while the lower yoke M is prevented from turning, and the ring or link L acts as a double-inclined plane on the cross-bar of each yoke, by reason of the motion given to it by the turning of the spindle J resembling the motion which would be imparted in twisting the ring or link. In consequence of this motion, and the effect thereofl upon the link and yokes, the link pulls on the lower yoke, drawing the valve-stein through the top plate, compressing the springf, and lifting the valve C from its seat, and allowing the liquid to ow through the faucet. When the spindle J is released the spring f expands, and instantly forces the valves down upon its seat, so as to close the faucet, and prevent the flow of liquid through the same.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a self-closing faucet, the combination of a yoke, K, on the lower end of the spindle, J, a similar yoke, M, on the upper end of the valvestem D, and a ring or link, L, connecting said yokes, substantially as herein described.
