Description
W G. RAWBONE.
CARTRIDGE-LOADING IMPLEMENTS.
latented Jan.18, 1876.
WMBSS S.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. RAWBONE, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE-LOADING IMPLEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,496, dated January 18. 1876; application filed August 17, 1875.
form a cylindrical rammer-head finished with a concave working-face.
The construction set forth in my said for: mer patent is improved *by moving the U- shaped link a greater distance back from the face of the chamfered head of the lower limb, and in placing the adjusting-pin so that the whole strain of the pressure lever is thrust on the top of the adjusting-pin in creasing the cartridges.
The object of my invention is to remedy objections urged against the use of the chamfered head on the lower limb of the creaser as a charge-rammer, the objections being that the head cannot pass far enough into the bore of the cartridge to be used as a ram mer in loading on account of interfering with the U-shaped connecting-link, and that, the edge of the head being necessarily chamfered or grooved, it does not pack the charge properly around the inner edge of the cartridge.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of a cartridge loading and creasing instrument constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, the hinged pressure-lever being shown in the position occupied when used as a rammer.
Ais the instrument, constructed, in all respects, similarly to the implement shown and described in the before-mentioned Patent No. 161,636, with the exceptions, first, that the U-shaped link E is placed nearer the hinge of the lower arm, in order that a greater length of cartridge-shell may pass over, and project beyond, the creasing-head than was possible before; second, that the position of the adjusting-pin F, with inclosing-spring, is altered, so that it is situated directly under, and receives the full strain of, the pressure on the arm H from the cam Gr when the pressure-lever is depressed. B is the hinged pressure-lever, on the rear or tail end of which is cast or attached a cylindrical head, D, equal in diameter to the creasing-head, and finished with a concave working-face, in order that, when used as a rammer, the margin or cartridge'edge of the charge shall be forced home a little farther than, or below, the level of the center of the charge. This is done in order that when the Wad is inserted and pressed against the charge, there may be nothing to interfere to prevent its being jammed tightly and equally against the whole face of the charge; and, further, to allow the crease to be made regularly on the outside of the wad without splitting or riding on the edge of the wad.
In loading with a chamfered or grooved rammer-head a circular ridge is made around the outer edge of the charge, which'ridge materially interferes with the proper placing of the wad, and the formation of aregular crease in the cartridge. overcome by the use of a creaser having a concave face, as the margin of the charge is then forced below the level of the center.
It is found, in using the creasing-instrument described in the aforesaid Patent No. 161,636, that the upper arm, in use, was apt to bend or spring down, on account of the weight being applied between the adjusting-pinand the hinge. This defect is entirely remedied by placing the pin F immediately under the point of pressure.
1 claim as my invention- In combination with the cartridge loading and creasing implement A, the rammer-head D, attached to the end of the hinged pressurelever B, and finished with a concave workingface, arranged and operating substantially as described.
W. e. RAWBONE.
