Description
A. PITMAN.
BURIAL-CASKET. N0, HZASZ Patented Ian. 18, 1876..
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE,
AARON PITMAN, OF MATAWAN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURlAL-CASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,4 82, dated January 18, 1876; application filed October 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON PITMAN, of Matawan, Monmouth county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Ooffins and Caskets, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide for coffins and caskets which are impervious to Water, very durable, of great strength, andlighter than those made of wood, and require no varnish.
The corpses buried in my improved coffins or caskets will not decompose, as in the ordinary coflins, when the precaution is taken to exhaust the air and seal the lid up air-tight, which is done by the same material of which the coflins or caskets consist.
Such improved coffins and caskets are cast in a mold, and can be ornamented either by figures made in-the mold, or by ornaments made in separate molds and fastened afterward to the coffins or caskets by using the same material.
My invention consists in manufacturing coffins or caskets and their ornaments of celluloid, which, in a dissolved or plastic state, is cast in forms or molds, by which process the coffin or casket bodies as well as their lids are manufactured.
In order to describe my invention morefully, I refer to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
Figure I represents a plan view of my im- Fig. II is a side view ofthe
