SUPPORT FOR RING TRAVELERS Filed Jan 16, 1928 I 171126711702 /0 y 6607 eff. 6 111110 an Patented Aug. 13, 1929.
EYE g'liiES GEORGE H. GILLIGAN, or PROVIDENCE, RHoDE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO U. s. Brno "TRAVELER COMPANY, or PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, A CORPORATION or RHODE ISLAND.
SUPPORT FOR RING TRAVELERS.
Application filed January 16, 192-8.
My invention relates to supports for circular ring travelers of the horizontal and reversible ring type adapted for use upon spinning and twisting frames, particularly for dry twisting.
The lubricant for the traveler is necessarily deposit-ed upon the inner face of the ring, and for that reason, when the thread leading from the delivery rolls to the spindle is accidentally broken, the free end thereot strikes the lubricated inner adjacent face of the ring and soils not only the wound thread upon the spindle, but spots the threz d wound upon adjacent spindles within the radius oi the thrashingthread end.
The essential objects of my invention are to make accidental soiling of the thread upon the spindle or spool impos ible; to etlect this end in a structure easy to assemble, composed of a minimum of parts, and incxpensix' e to construct. 3
lV'ith the above purposes in View, my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of parts as form the substance of the claims hereto appended.
In the accon'u ianying drawings which form a part of this invention, and wherein like ret'erence characters indicate like parts,
Figures 1 and 2 are a top plan view and a side elevation respectively of a traveler support embodying my invention together with a traveler thereon,
Figure 3, a section of the same and oi": the adjacent portion of the ring rail taken on line 33 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4, a perspective view of the ring supporting and shielding member.
My device is herein shown mounted upon a ring rail (3 provided with, the usual spindle orifices 7, one only or which is herein indicated.
A member indicated in a general way by the reference numeral 9, adapted to perform the combined functions of a ring holder and a lubricant shield comprises a substantially circular base plate 10 with dia metrically oppositely disposed lugs 12 provided with inclined open slots for the reception of screws or other attach ng members 1 1. A central circular opening 16 111 the plate is bounded by an integral vertical wall or shield portion 17. Annularly disposed in the base 10 of the member-9 are upwardly inclined tongues 19 formed from the material of the base by radial and trans- Serial No. 247,013.
verse slits 20 and 21, the portions embraced by the slits being subsequently upwardly bent. V
Resting upon the base is a horizontal spinnmg ring 23 comprising a lateral base flange 25, an intermediate body or web 26, and a flat laterally projecting operating head or flange 28. The free ends of the tongues 19 slightly overlap the flange 25 of the ring and clamp the latter tightly to the base plate 10. When thus fixed the tops of the ring 23 and the shield portion 17 are in substantially the same horizontal plane, with the edge of the latter slightly spaced from the flange 28 of the former, thus forming an annular recess or running space 30 for the circular ring traveler 32.
The lubricant for the ring ,traveleris upon the inner face of the web portion 26 of the ring, and for this reason the shield portion 17 of the member 9 prevents access to the lubricated surface of a broken or loose string upon the spindle operating in the spindle orifice 7.
As shown clearly in Fig. 3, the upper edge of the wall 17 terminates slightly below the upper edge of the spinning ring 23, and by such arrangement or structure the thread passing over the spinning ring is prevented from coming in contact with the upper edge of the wall or guard 17, and there is thereby no chance of the thread becoming soiled from the lubricant which might possibly creep up the wall of the shield or guard and get on the upper edge thereof.
I claim In a support for a ring traveler, a shield comprising a flat plate provided with a circular opening and a Vertical cylindrical wall, integral with the plate around the opening, a plurality of inclined lips struck up from said plate annularly arranged upon the plate and spaced from the wall, a ring comprising a web, a flange upon the bottom of the web overlapped by the lips whereby the ring is securely held to the plate, and the flange.
upon the top of the web adapted to carry a traveler and disposed adjacent the upper end of the wall, the upper edge of the wall being below the upper edge of the ring, whereby contact of the thread with the upper edge of the wall is obviated.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
GEORGE H. GILLIGAN.
