UNIE
SAMUEL TAYLOR BEARE, OF JACKSON, TENNESSEE.
REFRIGERATOR.
Application filed November 14, 1927. Serial No. 233,216.
This invention relates'to improvements in refrigerators, one object of the invent1on being to provide a simple and efiiclent structure in which a combined freezing and cooling unit is built into the upper portion of the casing of a refrigerator box, preferably of the top icer type, and to provide simple baflie devices which shall be so arranged as to compel an efiicient circulation of air about said combined freezing and cooling unit and through the chambers of the refrigerator.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying draw1ngs,
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation.
Figure 2 is a front View (with the front removed) illustrating an embodiment of my invention.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of the freezing and cooling unit, and
Figure 4 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section illustrating the position of the freezing and cooling unit and the drip and drain means therefor.
The box or casing of a refrigerator of the top icer type is shown at 1 and the walls of the same may include cork board or other type of insulation. The top of the box or casing is provided with. an opening 2 normally closed by a top icer door 3, to facilitate the introduction of ice into a freezing and cooling unit 4. This unit comprises a tank made of sheet metal or other suitable material and may be builtinto the upper portion ofthe refrigerator box or casing. An insulated bafile 5 preferably of cork board is located at one end of the unit 4 and spaced from one side wall of the box or casing to form a passageway 6. A passageway 7 is also located between the opposite end of the unit 4 and the adjacent side wall of the box or casing- Extendin downwardly from the central portion of the unit 4 is a baffle 8 preferably of cork board or other insulating material and between the upper end of said bafile 8 and the battle 5, an insulated member 9 (preferably ofcork board) is located and constitutes a shelf upon which a portion of the unit 4 is located. The baffle 8 terminates short of the bottom of the box or casing 1 to form a passage 10 which connects thechambers 11 and 12 of the refrigerator. Flanges 13 extend upwardly and somewhat laterally from the unit 4 at respective sides thereof and terminate at their upper ends against the top of the box or casing at or near respective 1 sides of the opening 2. Each of the side 11 and 12 of the refrigerator box or casing.
The freezing and cooling unit 4 is adapted for the reception of a refrigerating/ element. In the present instance, several compartments 16, 16, 17 and 18 are located within the unit 4. The compartments 16 and 17 communicate with openings 1819' in the front wall of the unit and the front ends of the compartments l6 and 17 are secured b solder or otherwise to the front wall of the unit. The rear edges of the compartment 18 may be soldered or otherwise secured to the rear wall of the unit, and is adapted to receive ice 20, either in the form of a block or in crushed condition. rounding the compartments in the unit 4, crushed ice and salt may be located as indicated at 21 and this mixture as well as the ice indicated at 20 may be inserted through the opening 2. The compartments 16 and 17 receive drawers or trays 2223 to contain material to be chilled or frozen.
A drip and overflow pipe24 communicates with the chamber or compartment 18 and a pipe 25 communicates with the bottom portion of the tank of the unit, both of said pipes discharging into a funnel 26 at the upper end of a drain pipe 27.
A sin le-door 28 closes food chambers of the refrigerator and a smaller door 29 is located in front of the freezing and cooling unit to permit ready access to the latter.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with a refrigerator box -or casing, of a freezing and cooling 7 unit built into the upper portion thereof and spaced from the side walls and top of said box or casing, an insulating baffle extending downwardly from said unit between the ends thereof and terminating at its lower end In the space surabove the bottom of the box or casing, an
insulating member covering one end of said qfiISt mentioned insulating member and said 2. The combination with a box or casing of a refrigerator, of a freezing and cooling unit located in the upper portion of the box or casing and spaced from the side walls and top thereof whereby passages are formed at the sides of the unit and over the top thereof, said passages communicating at their lower ends with chambers in the refrigerator box or casing, a baflle separating said chambers except at their lower ends, and flanges at the sides of said unit and extending to the top of the box or casing, said flanges having openings therethrough whereby the passages at-the sides of said unit communicate with the passage over said unit.
portion of said box or casing, said unit having openings in its front side, a plurality of compartments located Within said unit and communicating with the respective openings in the front side thereof, the unit having an ice chamber in its rear side and being open at its top to receive brine material to surround said several'compartments and thefront and ends of the ice chamber, and drawers or trays to enter said compartments.
4:. The combination with a box or casing of'a refrigerator having an opening in its top and a closure for said opening, of a freezing and cooling unit open at its top, an ice compartment located within said unit, other compartments located within said unit and accessible from the front thereof, said unit adapted to contain refrigerant material to surround said last mentioned compartments and engage walls of the ice compartment, and means whereby material to be chilled or frozen may be introduced into said other compartments.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
SAMUEL TAYLOR BEARE.
