FASTEN'ER.
Application filed March 1 1-, 1927. Serial No. 1%',32?.
This invention relates to devices for se curing carpets or other coverings to floors. Modern oiiice buildings as well as modern hotels and apartments are frequently pro vided with cement floors and the holding of carpets upon such floors presents quite a problem. Usually the molding at the bot tom of the baseboard is removed so that the carpet can be laid and then the molding is replaced. This securing means is insulticient for it does not prevent accidental displacement of the carpet.
My invention consists of a fastener which may be secured to the baseboard or partition and is provided with a portion adapted to engage the carpet and anchor it in place. In the preferred form the fastener is L-shaped, adapting it to be easily secured to the adjacent wall, and is provided with a downwardly pressed tongue to bite into the carpet. It is of such size as to be concealed behind and under the usual molding. To render unnecessary any accuracy in securing the fastener to the wall it is preferably provided with a slot in the vertically extending portion so that it can be adjusted toward and away from the carpet thus accommodating coverings. of different thicknesses. With the molding secured in place.
the fastener is prevented from moving upwardly and hooks into the edge of the carpet.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectlon showing my fastener in use. ll 1gure 2 is a perspective view of the fastener.
Referring first to Figure 2, my fastener consists of an L-shaped stamping 5, having a horizontal leg 8 and a vertical leg 10. The vertical leg is provided with an elongated slot 12, while the horizontal portion is pro vided with a downwardly pressed tongue 1%, which may be formed to provide teeth 16 as shown. The entire design is such that the fastener may be stamped from sheet metal at slight cost.
Figure 1 shows the manner in which the fastener is used. Here 17 indicates the baseboard or partition, 18 the floor, and 20 the molding which is nailed to the baseboard in the usual way. 22 indicates a portion of the carpet.
in laying the carpet the molding 20 is iirst removed as in present practices. The fasteners 4- are then secured to the baseboard by screws or other fastening means 24L which sass through the slots 12 in the fastener. T he screw is preferably not turned completely home so that the fastener is vertically adjustable. The carpet then laid and the edge is inserted under the fasteners. The molding 2O now replaced and holds the fasteners locked in engagement with the car: pet, the tongues 14 snagging the fabric. In removing the carpet, the molding is first removed and this permits the fasteners to be moved upwardly out of engagement with the edge of the carpet and the latter may then be withdrawn.
it will be found best to undercut the molding to receive the vertical leg of the fastener, that the molding snugly engages the wall or baseboard. This is not necessary at the bottom of the molding for the lower leg of the fastener is merely embedded in the carpet.
lin some cases it may be found desirable to press the tongue 14-. upwardly instead of downwardly and in such case, of court-5e the carpet would lie on top of the horizontal leg 8 of the fastener, and between it and the molding.
I claim as my invention:
A. floor covering fastening means adapted tobe secured to a wall and a floor covering comprising a plurality of spaced fasteners each having a portion engageable with a wall member and an outwardly extending gripping portion cngageable with a floor covering, a molding strip adapted to be socured in position over the fasteners to conceal them from view and assist in holding the floor covering in position, the first-named portion of the fastener being adjustably securable to the said wall to care for floor coverings of varying thickness, and the outwardly ex'ending member being provided with a downwardly pressed tongue for engaging the floor covering.
in testimony whereof I affu; my signature.
HARVEY A. LA BREGQUE.
