This invention relates to devices for renovating carpets and rugs, dermatological purposes and other like uses. More part1cularlv the invention is directed to an instrument for removing threads that mar the appearance of washed carpetings such as, the so called Oriental rugs and as a depilatory, as for example, for plucking the hairs to shape eyebrows in personal beautlfying treatments.

One object of the invention is to provide a powerdriven device of the character described which is easily manipulated by an operator to quickly remove an anchored thread or hair without injuring ad acent structures.

Another object of the invention is to provide, in an improved device of the character described, an attachment of simplified construction for engaging with on contact and removing an anchored thread or halr, said instrument being adapted to be driven through a flexible power transmission.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the character described comprising a few and simple parts forming a compact instrument, which shall be easy to operate, cheap to manufacture, and practical and eflicient to a high degree in use.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplifled in the constructions hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown various possible embodiments of this invention.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the improved device embodying the invention being applied to remove undesirable threads showing in the pattern of a washed Oriental rug.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of member having a pointed end shaped to facilitate separating out the undesirable cotton threads and guiding the latter for pluckin Oriental carpeting, such as Chinese rugs, are usually dyed their finished color after being woven, and any cotton threads or ends extending to the visible nap surfaces of the rugs are rendered inconspicuone because they take practically the same color as the wool nap forming the Wearing surfaces. But as such rugs are subjected only to processes for fixing the dye colors on woolen materials forming the nap surfaces to make the colors fast, said rugs when laundered or cleansed have the color of the cotton materials entirely washed out or faded so as to leave the nap surfaces spotted by the cotton threads. It is therefore necessary to pluck out said cotton threads to avoid marring the appearance of the rugs.

In order to quickly and easily remove these undesirable threads an improved device 10 embodying the invention is provided.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the 7 device 10 is seen to comprise a suitable power means such as an electric motor 11 fitted with a flexible drive transmission 12 which is terminated by an attachment holder 13. Said motor, transmission and holder may be of any well know construction, as for example such as employed for dental work. The transmission 12 is here seen to comprise an elongated tubular shielding casing 12 through which the coil wound drive-shaft 12 extends, and the holder 13, which includes a finger grip housing 13 terminating said casing 12 and enclosing a slide clutch 13" mounted to revolve with said shaft 12 The holder 13 by means of said clutch is adapted to releasibly engage various tools, such as a twist drill 16, to be rotated by the motor 11 through the transmission 12 in the well understood manner.

The connecting piece 14 has a sleeve portion 14 firmly secured to the end of the housing 13*, and a saddle portion 14 projecting from said sleeve portion 14. The saddle portion 14 may be formed with passage openings 14 to give access to the portion of the drill 16 in the holder 13 adjacent to the clutch 13 and a mountin end 14 on which the member 15 is adjustab ly secured. The member 15' may form a conical shell structure through which extends the twist drill 16, said member being provided with an opening 15 extending down from the apex 15 for exposing only an end por- The extreme outer portion of the rim of said opening 15 is preferably made to align with the axis XX of rotation of the drill or permitting the fluted spiral grooves 16 at said drill end portion 16" to engage on contact with said threads T. A thread T caught in a groove 16 of therevolving drill and carried against the relatively fixed rim edge 15 of said opening causes the thread to be plucked out and removed from the rug. As seen from Figs. 2 and 8, the member 15 also serves as a shield, to guard the operation and rug against accidental injury, the apex 15 of said member partially covering the sharp end 16 of the drill and forming a guarding closure to prevent the drill end from accidentally injuring the rug structure during the thread removing operation. The apex T15 also provides a convenient means for resting surface. 7 7

'To provide for various lengths of drills, the member 15 has a threaded base 15 which theattachment against a supporting screws into the mounting end 14 of the connecting piece 14 and is secured in set position by the locknut 17.

In using the invention, the device 10 is assembled as shown in the drawing and the motor is connected to a suitable electrical power source (notshown). The operator simply grasps the holder like a pencil and manipulates the attachment A to bring the exposed portion 16 of the drill in contact with an undesired cotton thread T showing modified form of attachment adapted to be used for dermatological purposes such as plucking hairs in shaping eyebrows and as a depilitory. Here the member 115 and drill 116 have all edges smoothly rounded to prevent accidental injury to the tissues surrounding the hairs when applying the device to the persons body. Another modified form of shielding member embodying the invention is shown at 215 in ,5. Here the apex 215 is extended and chamfered as at 215 and 215 to provide a pointed end or finger 215 which facilitates manipulating the separation of the undesirable cotton thread from the wool nap and aids in directing said thread to the drill end for plucking.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions o't practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matters herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing are to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent 1. A machine of the character described comprising in combination, a flexible rotatable transmission, and a hand device having a single member revolvable with said transmission for engaging on contact and pluck ing one of several closely spaced threads or hairs.

2. In a machine of the character described, a hand-manipulated device including a fluted revolvable member for engaging on contact and plucking one of a group of closely spaced threads or hairs.

3. A device of the character described comprising means for engaging and plucking one of a group of closely spaced threads or hairs on contact therewith including a revolvable member, and a relatively fixed 1110111- her having means through which said revolvable member extends.

4. A hand-manipulated device of the character described comprising a shell member having an opening, a member revolvably mounted within said shell member having a portion thereof exposed at said opening for engaging and plucking an individual thread or hair presented at said openin 5. A device of the character described comprising hand-manipulated power driven means for selectively engaging and plucking a thread or hair from a closely spaced group on contact therewith including a revolvable member, and guiding means communicating with said first mentioned means for expelling said thread or hair from the device.

6. A machine of the charater described comprising a rotatable transmission, and a hand-manipulated device having a single member revolvable by said transmission and a shell structure extending about said memher, said structure having an opening to expose a portion of said member whereat an individual thread or hair is engaged and plucked on contact With said portion.

A machine of the character described comprising a rotatable transmission, a handmanipulated holder terminating said transmission, a device mounted on said holder, said device having a single member revolvable by said transmission, and a shell structure surrounding said member having an opening adapted to pluck an individual thread or hair on contact therewith, said de vice having a passage opening spaced from said structure opening Wherethrough the plucked material is expelled.

In a machine of the character described, a hand-manipulated holder, a device extending from said holder comprising a rev0lvablemember, a shell structure extending about said member, a connecting piece for supporting the structure from said holder, said structure having an opening to expose one portion of said member adapted to pluck on contact with said portion an individual thread or hair, said piece having a passage communicating with the interior of said structure wherethrough the plucked material is expelled.

9. A machine of the character described comprising a rotatable transmission, and a hand-manipulated device having a single member revolvable by said transmission, a shell structure extending about said. member adapted to engage and pluck a thread or hair on contact with said portion, and means for adjustably mounting said structure with respect to said member to accommodate members of various sizes.

10. In a hand-manipulated device of the character described, a shell member and fluted means rotatably mounted within said member for plucking individual hairs or threads contacting with said means.

11. In a hand-manipulated device of the character described, a shell member and fluted means rotatably mounted Within said member, said member having an opening adjacent one end of said means Whereat a thread or hair may be brought in contact With said means for plucking.

12. In a hand-manipulated device of the character described, a shell member, and revolvable means coacting with said member for plucking a hair a thread on contact With said means, said member having a pointed portion to facilitate guiding the device in the plucking operation.

13. In a hand-manipulated device of the character described for plucking a nap material, a shell structure, and a member revoluably mounted to extend through said structure for plucking an individual hair or thread of said nap material brought in contact with said member, said structure having means extending therefrom to facilitate separating out the hair or thread to be plucked from the nap material.

In a hand-inanipulated device of the character described, a shell structure, and a fluted. member revolvably mounted in said structure, said structure having an opening adjacent the end thereof for exposing a portion of said member to permit contact a hair a thread with said portion for plucking, said structure terminating in a pointed extension to facilitate selecting and guiding the materials to be plucked to the opening.

15. A portable device of the character desc'ibed comprising a hand tool having revolvable means for selectively applying to any one of a group of closely spaced threads or hairs for individually plucking the latter.

16. A portable device of the character de scribed comprising a hand tool including an elongated revolvable member having means at one end for engaging and plucking an individual thread or hair on contact from a nap surface.
