ELECTRIC SWITCH.
: Application filed- July 5,
QMy invention relates to improvement in electric switches and more particL-ilarly to disconnecting switches and has for an object to .provide an improved disconnecting switch of therocking insulator type whereby to obtain a relatively large movement of the blade by a relatively small movement of the rocking insulator and whereby to provide a construction such that, when the switch is mounted vertically, the rocking insulator is not so positioned as to tendto collect and/or retain water. My invention will be better understood from the following description when con sidered in connection with the accompanying drawing and its scope will be pointed out in the appended claims. 1
In the accompanying drawing, Fig; 1 is a side elevation of a single pole disconnecting switch, in the closed position, embodying my invention and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the switch in the en position.
In the illustrated embo iment of my invention, stationary insulating supports such as two substantially parallel insulators 3, 4 supporting terminals 5, 6 respectively, are suitably secured to a base member shown as a channel 7. Intermediate the insulators 3, 4 is a rocking insulating support such as an insulator 8 mounted in alinement with the insulators 3, 4-. for movement about an axis substantially perpendicular to the plane of the insulatois 3, 4:. For this purpose, the insulator 8 may be secured to a rock shaft 9 in any suitable manner, the shaft being arranged to be actuated by any suitable mechanism shown as comprising a crank 10 and an operating rod 11. While only a single pole switch or switch unit 18 shown, it is obviousto those skilled in the art that two. or more units may have their rocking insulators mounted on the same rock shaft so as to be simultaneously operable.
In accordance-with my invention, I provide a contact operating mechanism 12 ar--. ranged to be actuated on movement of the rocking insulator 8 so as to obtain an angular contact movement disproportionate .to the angular movement of the rocking in- 1927. Serial No. 203,289.
such as links 13, 14, 15, 16 which are pivotally connected to form a polygonal linkage. As shown four members or links are employed to form a quadrangular linkage approximating a parallelogram. The link 13 is pivot-ally connected to the insulator 3 and another link 16 opposite the link 13 is pivotally. connected to the rocking insulator 8. The link 16 carries a movable contact such as a blade 17 which is arranged to cooperate with a stationary contact 18, shown as of the jaw type and mounted on the insulator 4. In order to ease the shock due to the chopping action of the-blade 17 on engaging its cooperating contact 18-and also to effect a. sm al l initial releasing movement of the blades 17 before it is disengaged from the contact 18 on the switch opening movement,
the blade is preferably arranged for a limitcd movement relatively to the link 16. For
at an intermediate oint such as 19 to the link 16 and at a point such as 20 adjacent one end through a lost motion slot 21 provided in the link 16. In order to provide a current path independent of the linkage joints, a flexible conductor 22 may be employedto connect the blade 17 with the terminal 5.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, the parts are so proportioned that the angular movement of the blade 17 is approximately three times the angular movement of the rocking insulator 8. Consequently even though a short blade be employed the linear velocity of the part arranged to engage the stationary contact 18 can be made relatively high. It-will be apparent from Figs. 1 and 2, particularly on considering the left hand edge of the drawing as the bottom, that even though the switch be mounted vertically with the insulator 4 at the top, no concave insulator faces are directed up and therefore there is no tendency for them to collect or retain water.
On further reference to Fig. 1, it will be noticed that as the linli 16 is rotated counterclockwise fromthe position shown, the pivot 20 moves from one end to the other of the slot 21' so that the blade is given an initial combined linear and an gular movement which helps to break any scaling action between the blade 17 and the contact 18. On closing the switch, the blade stationary supports and prvotally connected '1? e tea hesthe' e tw 1 will xyl m.

3. "An electric switch comprising two stationary insulating supports, a rocking insulating support mounted intermediate the stationary supports, a plurality of movable members pivotally connected to form a polygonal linkage, one of the members being pivoted ontherocking support and another of the members being pivoted on one of the stationary supports and pivotally connected at one point to the rocking support and at pivoted 6 In -steepest w re #9 even 1 l se l li e see 1 th m mb r li s lie; rocl qng'support and-pro;
