-UNITED STATES JAMES H. CARMEAN, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
ELECTRIC HEATER.
Application filed April 13,
My invention relates to heating devices, and more particularly to means for associating a heating element with an air impeller, the principal object of the invention being to support an ordinary electric fan in functioning relation with an electric heater whereby the heater may be provided by the owner of a fan for association therewith to comprise an air-conditioning device selectively usable as a fan or as a heater, and obviating the necessity for provision of separate devices for these purposes. Further ob'ects are to adapt a heater for supporting a an, to provide a support for a heating element and' a fan, and to adapt a drum, for
supporting a heating'element and engagement with a fan guard.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a heater, a support therefor, and a drum adapted to support a fan.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the support and heater, partly in vertical transverse section.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the support, heater and fan, partly in central vertical section.
Referring in detail to the drawings:
1 designates generally a heating element including a coil 2 energized by current provided through a cable 3, and supported by engagement in openings 4: of blades 5 extending radially from an axial support 6. A drum 7 is provided with internal longitudinal ribs 8 having grooves 9 to slidabl y receive the outer edges of the blades for supporting the heating element within the drum.
A support is further provided comprising a pedestal 10 including footing members 11 extending under the drum and substantially beyond the same, and a front wall 12 comprising a flat plate including an upper portion overlying the front end of the drum and provided with a circular opening 13 having smaller diameter than the drum, and the front edge of the drum is fixed to the wall with the opening of the wall concentric with the opening of the drum, for support of the drum from the pedestal in spaced relation therewith. The wall is further provided 1928. Serial No. 269,710.
with an aperture 14 in its lower portion between the drum opening and the footing members to receive a switch member 15 with which a cable 16 may be connected leading to a plug 17 connected with the cable 3. The wall opening is preferably grilled by bars 18.
The heater thus supported may be positioned adjacent an electric fan for directing air currents through the drum over the heat 111g element.
1 preferably provide means for supporting an electric fan adjacent the heater, and incorporate said means with the combined heater and support, the means comprising rearwardly extending wings 19 fixed to the periphery of the drum and preferably integral therewith and having front edges engaged with the front wall, and a shelf 20 movably supported by vertically slotted arms 21. from the wings rearwardlv of the drum, the shelf being adjustably engaged with the wings by screws 22 extending through slots 23 in the arms-and through suitable openings in the wings, washers 14 on the headed ends of the screws to span the slots and wing nuts 25 on the outer ends of thescrews for fixing the shelf in adjusted position.
The shelf is adapted to receive and support an electrically-actuated air impeller 26 of ordinary construction, such as is widely used, in spaced relation with the plug 17, so that the switch 15 may control both the fan and the heater. A plate or bracket 30 may be provided, supported from the front wall, having apertures 31 for passage of the screws 32 for support of the switch.
A heating element having been provided with a support as described, it may be positioned as desired in a space to be heated. and a fan may be positioned on the lltli lo impel air through the drum for heating. The shelf may be adjusted to suit the dimensions of the fan that may be available, for relating the guard and the blades of the fan properly to the drum.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a heater of the character described including a heating element and a fan having a circular guard member, a drum including a portion adapted to receive the heating element and a portion adapted to engage the guard, and supporting means including rearwardly extending wings fixed to the drum and a shelf vertically adjustably supported frommthe wings for adjustably supporting the fan with said guard engaged with aforesaid portion of the drum.
2. In a device of the character described includinga drum, a heating element in the drum, a fan, means including cables for energizing the heating element and the fan, and a switch connected with the cables, a support including a wall comprising a portion fixed to the drum and having an opening concentric with the opening of the drum and a portion having an opening to receive said switch.
3. In a device of the character described including a drum, a heating element in the drum, :1 fan means including cables for energizing the heating element and the fan, and a switch connected with the cables, a support including a wall comprising a portion fixed to the drum and having an opening concentric with the opening of the drum, a portion having an opening to receive said switch, and a footing member extending un- 4. In a heater including a drum, a heat ing element mounted in the drum, a conductor connected with the heating element, and
a switch connected with the conductor, a
faceplate including a portion engaged with the front edge of the drum and a portion provided with an aperture to receive the switch, and means engaged with the plate for supporting the switch in the aperture.
5. In a heater of the character described including a drum, a heating element mounted in the drum, a fan at the rear end of the drum, cables for conducting current to energize the heating element and the fan, and a switch connected with said cables, a support including a wall comprising a portion overlying one end of the drum and a portion having an aperture to receive the switch, a footing member connected with said switch-receiving portion of the wall, and a bracket engaged with said wall for supporting said switch in the opening 6. In a heater of the character described, in combination with a drum, a heating coil in the drum, a fan, cables for conducting current to the coil and the fan, and a switch connected with said cables, a front wall plate comprising a portion fixed to -the front edge of the drum and having an opening concentric with'the opening of the drum, and a portion having an aperture to receive the switch, a switch-supporting bracket, and means including said front wall for support- .ing the bracket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES H. CARMEAN.
