UOIBINATION HEATING-AGEN '1 CONTAINER AND WET-OOHPRESS HOLDER.
Application filed April 18, 1927. Serial No. 183,814.
- The present invention relates more particularly to means for receiving and holding both a heating agent and a wet compress foruse in ailments and disorders of an inflammatory nature, colds, pleurisy, local and internal congestion, sprains, lameness and other bodily afilictions wherein heat and moisture of a wet compress either medicated or plain may be applied in a more convenient, expedient and 0 satisfactory manner than has heretofore been accom lished. A c 'aracteristic feature of the present invention is an open-ended slip1 or covering,
forming a part with a fabric a compartment or container, and forming holdlng a wet comcasing for receiving an press.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a device wherein a wet compress,
poultice, fonientation, stu e or other medium may be more easily place and properly held in position on a patient.
Another object is to better facilitate the handling of a compress, stupe, poultice, fo- 5 mentation or other medium.
Another object of the invention is to elimi- -nate wrinkling andwaddy effect of a com-' press, stupe, poultice, or other medium when on a atient. I
Sti 1 another object is to eliminate the separate handling of a compress or other medium and a heatin agent.
Another 0 ject of importance is to expedite the administration of hot compresses by eliminating .repeated wetting, wringing and changing of compresses, thereby curtailing the work generally experienced by a nurse or attendant. I
Stillanother. object is to so construct a de- 40 vice for the purpose whereby thepatient or attendant may see at a glance the position of the compress or other medium.
Another object isto so construct a device for the purpose whereby a stupe, compress or other medium may lie for the most part in direct contact with "the flesh and always in correct position with the heating agent.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an appliance for the purpose,
the compress, stu or other medium may be easily and correct y placed in connection with the heating agent and as easily removed; no
. metal parts will endanger the user by shortcircuiting where electric heatin elements are used; whereby the same will convenient,
in makeup, durable, econo eating agentwhereby thoroughly eflicacious for the purpose, simple ical and comparatively cheap to manufacture; these and other objects and advantages will be comprehended by the public generally, and by nurses, hospitals, attendants and curative practitioners especially.
In the drawings forming a part of these specifications:
I Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of my combination heating agent-container and wet compress-holder and shows the heating agent pouch thereof partially open.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my combination heating agent-container and wet co1n press-holder with a compress orstupe folded, and an electric heatin pad wherein the pouch portion is inverse to tide view in F1 1.
Fig. 3: is an inverse view of ig. 2 with the compress or stupe unfolded and in readiness for use.
Fig. 4: is a similar view to Fig. 3, with the exce tion that a hot water bottle is substitute in lieu of an electric heating pad.
Fig. 5: is a cross section 10f Fig. 4, on the line :v-:v. 1
Fig.6 is a cross section of a modified combag or pouch somewhat longer than it is in 9 breadth, altho dimensions are optional, and
. by preference it ismade up from two pieces of material as'l. J
Preparatory to making the finished prodnot as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, a couple of pieces of cloth 1, are out to the desired size, and a secondary stri of fabric, either of closely woven materia or open mesh as netting or lace as 2 is cut to the same width as provided for the pouch, but shorter in length and placed between the parts 1,equally distant from the ends, and the whole stitched along the edges asshown in Fig. 7 excepting a .por* tion midway of the side seams as shown, to form a mouth opening 3 in the pouch. The
material at the end of the pouch forming said mouth, if'not having a selvage edge, by preference, is inturned and stitched toprevent fraying or tearing.
The material having been properly assembled as set forth the pouch is now turned inside out and presents the appearance as shown in F ig. 1. In this figure is represented a pouch A, closed at one end, and an attached case B formed by the portion 2 and a side 1 of the pouch A, but shorter than said pouch and open at both ends, the same being disposed centrally of said pouch to facilitate the insertion of a compress or stupe as D, shown in Figs. 2 and'3, the mouth opening 3,
by preference is somewhat more narrow than the breadth of the pouch, and the closed portions as 6 form shoulders and prevent accidental removal of heating agent. A heating agent if of electrical construction being partially folded to insert or remove, and-a hot water bottle but partially filled inserted and then completely filled after insertion, and vice versa.
, The pouch is for the purpose of holding a heating agent as for instance an electrical heating pad 4, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or a hot water bottle as 5, in Figs. 4 and 5, and the casing B is for the purpose of holding a compress or stupe D, or other medium.
In Fig. 2 the compress or stupe is shown as havino been inserted within the said casing formed between the side of said pouch and the shorter outer portion 2, preferably said compress or stupe is inserted from one end of the casing in a partly folded condition, the under side with its edge drawn closely along the edge of said casing with the folded portion over and toward the same edge, in which said position the compress or stupe may be readily unfolded, without wrinkling or wadding the same; anjnnfolded position of said compress or stupe being shown in Figs. 3 and 4. 1
In making the casing 13, somewhat shorter than the pouch A, as set forth, a stupe or compress may be more easily placed or removed either by an attendant or the patient. The compress extending from the casing at both ends, it may be grasped by one or both hands as expedient in regulating its adjustment, and by combining a heating agent with a wet compress, stupe or other medium of a similar nature, separate handling and adjustmentof the parts is avoided and much better results are attained.
, manner.
By forming the pouch with a side casing.
as set forth, both a heating agent and a compress can be operated in unisonand the same simultaneously adjusted to different parts of the anatomy as expedient, adding to the comfort of the patient and increasing the skill of the nurse or physician.
Having therefore set forth the object and nature of my invention and a construction embodying the principles thereof, and having described 'such construction, its purpose, function and mode of operation, what I claim as new and useful and of my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
,1. A device of the class set forth, the combination of a pouch for the reception of a heating agent and a casing for the reception of a stupe, said casing being formedby an outer surface of said pouch, and a layer of fabric formed with said pouch along opposite parallel edges of both said pouchand casing the mouth of said pouch and the open ends of said casing being in the same relative position.
2. A device of the class set forth, the combination of a pouch formed from two pieces of material and a casing formed of a single piece of open-mesh'fabric, all of said pieces being of elongated rectangular formation, said casing piece being of shorter dimension than said pouch material pieces and lying midway of said pouch material pieces, all of said pieces being stitched along corre-' spondin parallel edges and upon but two edges 0 said material except said pouch which is also stitched along one end designated as its bottom and along portions of its opposite end and designated as its mouth or open end, said casing piece being inturned between inturned edges of said pouch pieces, all of said inturned pieces being stitched to gether and occupying a portion wholly within said pouch, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.-
A device of the nature-set forth,-the combination with a casing, one side of which being designated as its back, extendin beyondits opposite side, the shorter side of said casing being separated at its ends from its opposite side and forming mouth openings, and a compress adapted to be introduced into Said casing in a folded condition with one of its edges'lying uppermost, said compress adapted to extend beyond said shorter side of said casing and be unfolded with its ends iyirig wholly upon the projecting ends of said 4:. In a heating agent container and. wet compress holder comprising in combination, a pouch having amouth opening atone end and a casing open at both ends, said casing being formed by one side wall of said pouch and a stripof fabric secured to said pouch along opposite edges thereof, said casing being shorter than said pouch andfoccupying a position intermediate the endsthereof.
