SWITCH-OPERATING MECHANISM. I
Application filed January 29, 1927, Serial No. 164,601.
My invention relates to switch operating mechanism and particularly to's'uch Operating mechanism which is actuated by electric power and an object of my invention is the provision of an improved switch operating mechanism which is automatically disconnected from the source of power when it reaches closed circuit position.
My invention will be better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, and its scope will be pointed out in the appended claims. 1
{eferring to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view of the mechanism in open circuit position Fig. 2 is a similar view of the mechanism in an intermediate stage of its closing movement; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showin the mechanism in closed circuit position.
The switch which is operated by the mechanism comprising my invention is not shown but is operatively connected with the lever or member 1, as shown for example in my Letters Patent 1,551,319, granted to General Electric Company, August 25, 1925. Lever 1 is mounted on a shaft indicated by the dot and dash line2 and is shown connected by the link 3 to the centrifugal operating device 4 rotated by the electric motor 5. However, other electromagnetic means maybe provided for moving the lever if desired, such for example as a solenoid. On the same shaft 2 is the cam 7 having the face 8 which terminates at one end in the notch 9 and the finger 10. On a second shaft indicated by the dot and dash line 12 are mounted the arm 13 having roller 14 engaging the cam and the arm 15 carrying contact 16 of the motor circuit controller or switch. Spring 17 tends to rotate both arms 13 and 15 counterclockwise. The cooperating contact 18 of this switch is mounted on the lever 19 fulcrumed at 20 and vieldingly held in the position shown in Fig. 1 by spring 21. Contact 18 is attached to lever 1.9 by means of the bracket 2-2 which is pivoted to the lever at 23. spring 24 being in terposed to permit a slight yielding of the contact when the switch is closed. The opposite end of lever 19 constitutes an armature and has side plates 26 extending on opposite sides of the electromagnet 27. I have shown two windings, 28 and 29. wound in the same direction for energizing this magnet. W'inding 28 is connected to the power circuitthe finger 10 on cam 7 with a curved inner face 32, in effect a second cam, which, if the roller fails to drop into the switch 9 under the influence of spring 17, engages it and forces it .into the notch, thereby positively separating the contacts 16 and 18.
With the mechanism in the open circuit position illustrated by Fig. '1, closure of switch 31 energizes the electromagnet 27 to move contact 18 into engagement with contact 16 the cam 7 constituting an abutment for this contact. The motor is thereby energized and the holding winding 29 maintains the motor switch closed irrespective of hand switch 31. As the lever 1 is rocked by the centrifugal device the roller 14. travels over the face of the cam 8 until the lever and switch operated thereby reach closed circuit position when the roller drops into or is forced into the notch 9. Switch arm 15, being on the same shaft as arm 13 carrying the roller, is thereby rocked to withdraw its contact 16 from contact 18 whence the motor circuit and also the holding winding 29 are decnergized, the parts then being in the position illustrated by Fig. 3. Upon tripping Open the main switch, the parts resume their original position.
Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. Switch operating mechanism comprising an operating member. power actuated means opcratively connected therewith, a circuit controller having cooperating movable contacts for controlling said means, one of said contacts being movable toward the other to cause the energization of said means, means opposing rearward movement of said other contact, and means responsive to a predetermined movement of said operating memher for moving said opposing-:means to an effective po ion and for moving said other weirdly away from aid. one con.
tact for causing the deenergization of said power actuated means.
2. Switch operating mechanism compris ing power operating means, a member operated thereby, a circuit controller for controlling said power operating means having cooperating movable contacts in circuit with said means, means for moving one of the contacts into engagement with the oth r to close the circuit of the operatingmeans, an abutment opposing rearward movement of said otl er contact, and means responsive to a predetermined movement of the operated memrearward movement otsaid other contact during the switch closing movement of the mechanism for withdrawing said other contact out of engagement with said one contact when the mechanism reaches switch closed position.
4. Switch operating mechanism comprise ing power operating means, a member operated thereby, a circuit controller comprising a pair of movable contacts for controlling the operating means, means for moving one contact into engagement with the other contact, and means operatively connected with said operated member initially for preventing 'movement of said other contact away from said one contact and for positively moving said other contact away from said one contact when the operated member reaches a predetermined position.
5. Switch operating mechanism comprising an electromagnetic operating means, a member operated thereby, a circuit controller comprising a pair of movable contacts controlling the circuit of the operating means, means for moving one contact into engagement with the other contact to close said cir cnit, acam operatively connected with said operated member for holding said other contact fixed against backward movement and means arranged at the end of the cam for producing a positive withdrawal movement of said other contact from said one contact.
6. Switch operating mechanism comprising a motor, a centrifugal device connected thereto, a member operated thereby, a circnit controller for closing the circuit of the motor having cooperating contacts both of which are movable, electromagnetic operating means for moving one of said cont-acts into engagement with the other contact, a cam operatively connected with the operated member, and a roller engaging the cam and operatively connected with said other contact, said cam having a notch at one end thereof into which the roller is adapted to drop and having a finger beyond the notch constructed to force the roller into the notch and thereby positively separate said contacts.
In witness whereor I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day o1 January, 1927.
