The present invention relates'to vending mechanism "and provides yan attachment" to be associated' with a fluid Idispensirrg pump such as generally provildedftor'gasoline stations so that upon depositingacoin ot predetermined denominate value given'ainount of fuel or oil may zbe obtained; 4
Other 'objects and 'advantages will be japparent andIl suggest' themselves asthe nature ot 'the invention is understood, While the drawings illustrate' anemb'odi ment of the invention itvis to be` understood that in adaptingfthesameto meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in Athe form, proportion andininor details 'of coustructi oir may [be resorted to 'without de.- parting from the: v'the .inventio'nfy Figure Alis asideview ot a vending mech'- an'isni embodying l'the`,:iri`vention,

Figure 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3 3 ot' Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 vis a detail sectional view on the line 5 5 of Figure 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views ot the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral denotes a suitable housing for enclosing the operating parts. A transverse shaft 11 is journaled in opposite sides ot the housing 10 and projects at one end to which is iitted a gear Wheel 12 which 1s arranged to cooperate with the pump operating rack 13. A detent wheel 14 and a gear wheel 15 are mounted upon the shaft 11 and are secured thereto so as to rotate therewith. A double ended dog or detent 16 coacts at its respective ends 16a and 16h with the detent wheel 14 to prevent rotation thereof and operation of the vending mechanism, the end 16b being connected by means of a link 17 with one arm of a lever 18 the other arm of said lever being disposed to coact with a rack bar 19, the teeth of which are adapted to mesh with the teeth of the gear Wheel 15, said rack bar being held in predetermined position by rollers 20 which are adjustable to maintain proper meshing relation ot the teeth of the rack bar 19 and gear Wheel 15. A lat-ch 21 is adapted to engage 011e end of the Referring lever-18 so as` tdholdthe detent 16 in neutral position as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure t2,"whereby the mechanism may be operatedat'will without necessitating the deposition of a'coin.- Arod 22 at one side of the rack bar 19 and connected thereto is providedwith an upper stop23 and a lower stop 24,`said 'stops being adjustable. The upper 'stop 23 isadapted to engage one end oi the lever18 and the lowersto'p' 24 is adapted to ei'igag'e 'one end'of a lever 25 which is connect'ed by means of aY link 26 with an arm 2T,
which'in turnis connected by means of a link 28 with acutfott 29 adapted when lowered to 'extend aero'ssthe entrance of a coin chute 30. A spring 31`normally tends to close the cut oit'29: A passage 32opens into a coin box 33"'and' the coin chute 30 is in communication therewith and this'passage receives a plunger 34 which is normally held'V at the limit of-its outward movement by means ot' a spring 35.
A; retarder 36 normally projects into the passage 32 and is adjustably connected to the detent 16 and operates to retard the forward movement of a coin 37 when entering the passage after leaving the coin chute 30.
The operation of the machine is as tot lows:
Normally the rack bars 13 and 19 are in i lowered position and the cut oli" 29 is held elevated by the stop 24 engaging the adjacent end of the lever 25. Operation ot' the mechanism is prevented by the detent 16 at end 16" engaging a tooth ot the detent wheel 14. Upon depositing a coin 37 in the chute 30 it is received in the passage 32, its forward movement being' checked by the retarder 36. The plunger 34 being pressed inwardly causes the coin 37 to ride under the retarder 36 with the result that the detent 16 at end 16b is moved away trom the teeth ot' the detent wheel 14 and is held in such position by means of a spring 38 mounted upon a stem 39 consisting ot separate sections 39 and 39" connected by said spring, the latter section being pivoted at one end to the housing as indicated at 40 and the former being pivoted at 40 to the stem 41 of the detent 16. lVhen the stems 39 and 41 are in line, the detent is in neutral position or upon the dead center and a slight movement in either direction causes the spring 38 to react and throw the detent end 16 or 1Gb into engagement with the detent wheel 14. The cut-oli' 29 is withdrawn from chute 30 when the rack bars are in their normal or lowered position clockwise il'iuFgrme .21 Ill aeoiniisthen int-w sei-ted and plunger 34: operated, the lower end 16a would be thrown into engagement `--ivi-tlv wheel 14: while the upper end 1 6" woulclmove away from Wheel 14.L However, cutoff' Q9 would stillhe withdrawn until vthe handle w as turned! clockwise whereupon f rack 19. fwould ascend, lng: 24,Would move out ofengage;- ment Withl lever 25 and sp 1ng 31'\vuld cause cutfo.29.,to enter theteliute 3 O .f When the ACoin engag'e'spaltt 367 end ltaengages the ,teeth anclz rdesuover theteeth'as wh'eelrlw is turneclcl'ockivise- Whenmeniber 23 engages `lever 18, end lis. thrown into engageniemt with. the. teeth.; ,and rides over the teeth. vas wheel'M isiturnedin the `opposite direction.
