PULLEY.
Application filed November This invention relates to pulley and means for securing the same on shafts or axles.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a new and improved sectional pulley with means for securing the sectlons together.
Another object of the invention is the provision of new and improved means for attaching a pulley to its shaft.
Other objects of the invention are the pro vision of a new and improved pulley the parts of which may be stamped from sheet metal, together with means for ad ustably securing the same to a shaft that s cheap to manufacture, simple in construction, easily assembled, readily mounted on a shaft, and that is not likely to become broken or get out of order.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the fol lowing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is an end elevation of the improved pulley, showing the same in position on a shaft, the shaft being shown in seetlon;

On the drawings the reference character 10 designates a shaft, axle or other member to which the pulley 11 is adapted to be rigidly secured. Y
The pulley 11 comprises a plurality of similar or duplicate units which are adapted to be adjustably clamped, and rigidly con nected, together. In the form of the de Vice selected to illustrate one embodiment,

with one or more disk segments which are rigidly connected to the shell or segment 14 in any suitable manner as by, being welded thereto. As shown, two disk segments 16 and 17 are employed at each end of each drum segment. The segments 16 and 17 are connected together and interbraced as by welding the flanges together about the openings 18 and 19, as at 21, see Fig. 2. The outer peripheral edge of the disk segments 16 and 17 are preferably provided with flanges 22 ad 23 respectively, which are rigidly connected to. the shell 14: as by welding. The inner edges of the segments 16 and 17 are, also flanged as at 24;, and 25, which are rigidly connected to semicircular reinforcing members 26 as by welding. The members 26 form a hubfor the drum or pulley. The ends 20 of the reinforcing members 26 extend radially outwardly across the ends-of the segments 16 and 17 and to which they are rigidly secured. Suitable means are provided for bracing the drum or barrel to prevent its becoming distorted while in use. As shown, suitable bracing members, as the channel bars 27, are arranged longitudinally of the sections and have their flanges'28 rigidlyconnected to the shell 14: and have the web portion 29 turned inwardly at each end and rigidly connected to the disk segment 16, as shown in Fig. 2. 7 Suitable means are provided to insure alignment of the two sections. As shown, a U-shaped member 81 is secured to one of the sections adjacent each dividing line. The member is provided with an aperture 82 with which a spring clip 38 secured to the opposite section is adapted to register. The clip 33 is curved to form a resilient guiding member whereby when the same is inserted through the aperture 32 it will retain'the two sections in alignment.
Any suitable means may be employed for holding the sections together. As shown,
two clamping bars or members clamping nuts 43 and 35 are employed. These bars are adapted to extend tl'irough adjacent openings 18 in the two sections and are provided with recesses 36 and 37 for accommodating the webs 38 and 39 formed by the sections 16 and 17. The inner ends of the bars are connected together by the bolt 41 which is anchored to the bar 34 as by means of the pin which prevents the bolt from turning. The bolt eritcnds through suitable openings in the ends 20 of the reinforcing member 26 and through an aligned opening in the bar The bolt is provided with suitable which are accessible through the opening 18 for screwing the same on said bolt and clamping the parts together.
A bolt 141 extends through aligned openings in the outer ends of the bars 34, 35, and the ends 20 of the reinforcing members 26 and is provided with suitable clamping nuts 45 which are accessible from'the outside of the drum or pulley.
Suitable means are provided for rigidly mounting the pulley on shaft. As shown, a plurality of plates 16, having channels t? i are rigidly connected to the inner surface of the hub or reinforcing members 26. A clamping or gripping member l? provided on its inner surface ith inwardly extend ing projections, teeth or corrugations 4L9, is adapted to slidably engage the channel 47. The side members of the channel ll pro vided with inwardly extending lugs or ribs wh1ch are adapted to engage corresponding grooves or recesses 51 in the gripp member 48 for holding the same in position within the channel 17. The clamping or gripping member d8 is wedge-shaped, being thicker at its inner end than at its outer, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Its outer end is provided with a shank or screwthreaded extension52 which is adapted to be engaged by a nut 53. The nut is adapted to engage the end of the channel member 47 and by screwing the nuts on to the shank or screw-threaded extension 52 the clamping or gripping member 48 may be forced radially inwardly against the shaft 10 for clamping or gripping the same to thereby hold the pulley rigidly on said shaft.
All parts of the pulley except the attaching means may be stamped from sheet netal thereby greatly reducing the cost of manufacture of the device. The end sections of the pulley are so constructed that they ma- 7 terially assist in bracing the structure and channel holding with the longitudinally extending members form braces for rigidly the parts in assembl d relation.
The pulley may be assembled in position on the shaft by bringing the two sections together around the shaft, whereupon the spring-clips 33 will snap in position and hold the sections in alignment until the clamping members are attached. The wedges or clampin members are next applied for curing the pulley to the shaft. If the pulley does not run true, the clamping bolts at one or both ends thereof may be adjusted to correct this inaccuracy. I
When it is desired to adjust the pulley along the shaft the nuts 53 are released and the gripping or clamping members 18 are driven inwardly to release the same from the shaft, after which the pulley may be mover to the adjusted position and the nuts again tightened to secure the pulley in its adjusted position. I
In the modified form illustrated in 10, 11 and 12, the pulley sections are formed slightly different adjacent to the mating faces and asimpler connecting means is used. The clamping bars 34 and 35, with their associated bolts 4E1 and 44, are eliminated.
The disk segments 66 and 67 corresponding to the segments 16 and 17, are provided with offset portions 68 and 69 12), forming the enlarged pocket 70, the front wall of which is formed by a block 71, secured to the offset portions 68 and 69 preferably by welding a line substantially flush with their outer faces, as indicated at 72. This block is perforated at 73 to receive an eye bolt 73 pivoted in the mating portion of the exposed section.
In such mat-ing portion the disk segments are reenforced by plates 74 and 75' (Figs. 11 and 12) which, together with the plates, are perforatedat 76 to receive a pin 77 passing through the eye 7 8 of the eye bolt 73, and securing it pivotally to the disk segment-s. One end of the pin 77 is headed and the other is equipped with a lrey 7 9 to secure it in place.
The disk segments are equipped with reenforcing members 80, corresponding to the reenforcing members 26, and these are pro vided with openings 81 to accommodate the eye bolt 73.
The shell 14 is cut away at 82 to provide a hand hole and permit the nuts'83 and back nuts 84- to be readily applied to the eye bolts after the pulley sections have been brought together.
In assembling this modified form the two sections are brought face to face with the clips 33 entered in the apertures 32, as in the previously described construction, and the bolts 73 inserted through the openings 73. The clips are adapted to insure proper alignment, while the nuts 83 and 84 are being run down and set on the eye bolts.
This modified construction contains less parts and is simpler and easier to assemble. fhe hinged connection of the eye bolts read ily accommodates itself to slight variations while insuring that the sections will be held firmly together and permit equal distribution of stresses.
it is thought from the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that the construction and operation of our device will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and that various changes in size, shape, proportion and details of construc tion may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
W e claim as our invention:
1. In combination, a sectional pulley comprising a plurality of duplicate sections, means for adjustably securing said sections together at each side of the median plane of said pulley, and wedge means for securing the pulley to a shaft, said wedge means being provided with ribs extending longitudinally of said means for engaging a shaft for securing a pulley thereto.
2. A pulley, comprising two belt ngaging members having curved surfaces, a curved disk segment rigidly connected to each end of each of said members, means for clamping said segments together at each side of the median plane of said pulley, and means including keeper plates rigidly connected to said members, and Wedges slidably mounted on said keeper plates and adapted to engage a shaft for holding said pulley thereon.
3. A pulley comprising a plurality of curved belt engaging segments formed from sheet metal, a disk segment rigidly connected to each end of said belt engaging segments, means to clamp said last named segments together whereby said belt engaging segments will form a belt engaging surface and a plurality of strengthening ribs on the inner surface of said belt engaging segments and extending in the plane of the axis of said I pulley.
6. A pulley comprising a belt engaging envelope divided longitudinally into a plurality of segments, and a plurality of sheet metal disk sections rigidly connected to the ends of said segments, means for adjustably clamping said disk sections together, and means extending longitudinally of the axis of said pulley for attaching said pulley to a shaft.
7. A pulley comprising a sheet metal envelope forming a belt engaging member, a sheet metal disk rigidly secured in each end of said envelope and sheet metal bracing members each U-shape in cross-section and having its longitudinal edge portions bent laterally outwardly to form feet for attachment to the inner surface of said envelope, said members extending longitudinally of said envelope for preventing distortion of said pulley during its operation.
8. A pulley comprising two belt engaging sections semi-cylindrical in cross-section, a pair of semi-cylindrical disk segments rigidly secured in each end of each of saidplates rigidly secured to each section, and
wedge members slidably mounted in said plates.
10. A pulley comprising a segmental belt engaging member, a pair of disk segments rigidly secured to each end of each segment of said member, a set of plates in one end of each pair of disk segments, an eye boltpivoted to each set of plates, a block in the opposite end of each pair of disk segments and provided with an opening for receiving the corresponding eye bolt in an adjacent block.
