Description
J. A. HEBB DUMPING CAR July'v 3o, 1929.
Filed Nov. 4, 1926 Patented July 30, 1929.
A UNITED STATES JOHN n; Hannon HoPWoo-n, PENNSYLVANIA.
nUMPINe can.
Application led November 4, 1926'. Serial No. 146,172.
My invention consists of an improvement in dumping cars, of the kind used in coal mine operations and the like. y
It has for its object to provide an automatically opening end gate for discharge of the contents by gravity, when the car is elevated and tipped in the usual lifting and lowering cage of a vertical shaft, for discharging the contents downwardly therefrom into a receiving chute or the like.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a somewhat diagrammatic View in side elevation, showing the car and its lifting cage at a partially advanced dumping position;
Fig. 2 is a det-ail view of the opening loop for unlocking and lifting the end gate;
Fig. 3 is a partial similar View, lshowing the car fully tipped with the end gate raised;
Fig. 4 is an end View of the car, showing the end gate in locked position;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line V-V of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a partial plan view, showing the construction at the discharging end.
The car A is of usual construction for coal mine operation, having the closely adjacent wheels 2 adapting it to be run along the mine tracks and onto the supporting platform and rails 3 of a well known automatic selfdumping cage 4. The latter is of a construction commonly utilized in coal mine shaft operations, adapted to receive the car A at any lower position in the mine and to elevate it, then by automatic operative mechanism of a well known type, to tip the cage forwardly for dumping, the wheels being fiXedly held by the usual clamps or dogs 5.
The particular feature of invention is in the mounting, locking and unlocking of the end gate 6. Such end gate fills the cross-sectional area of the car at one end between its sides 7, and is located slightly back of the terminal delivery edge of floor 8. The end gate lits somewhat loosely between the sides for free opening and closing, and retention of the load, and is properly braced and reinforced by corner brackets and straps 9.
The upper one of these extends backwardly at each outer side of the car by extension 10, and is pivotally connected at 11 by a bolt or stud with the upper side edge portions of the car A, as clearly shown.
The arms 9, 10, as thus constructed, strongly support the end gate, and pass outwardly at each side around vertical reinforcing brace members or belts 12.
These. surround the car for reinforcement at its forward end and extend upwardly slightly above its edge by turned in terminals 13, over which the supporting arms 10- pass in lowering, for guiding and assisting in maintaining them and the end gate in proper alinement for closing at the end of the car between its sides. y
The lower vertical and sloping sides of the car body also preferably extend, like bottom 8, somewhat outwardly beyondV the normall position of the end gate, for protection there" of and free discharge movement of the load.
The end gate 6 as thus mounted, is capable of being lifted by the means hereinafter described, and to be lowered by gravity when the car is re-erected towards a horizontal position.
For such purpose I provide a specially designed locking bolt 14 which in the form shown` is vertically straight at its upper portion, then offset laterally as at 15, and then extended downwardly as at 16, providing a locking extension which fits freely within an enlarged opening 17 in. the extended floorof the car.
For the purpose of lifting the locking bolt, it is provided at its upper end with an outwardly extending hook 2O which is maintained in such outward position by the offset guiding mounting of the bolt above described.
At a suitable location above the shaft and properly arranged for engagement of hook 20, is a loop 21 having an elongated cross bottom bar 22 and suspended by a chain or chains 23 from any suitable portion of the superstructure. l preferably also utilize two outer chains as shown, which tend to hold the bar continuously straight, avoiding twisting movement, so as to ensure proper engagement with hook 20.
As the car rises and tips forwardly for dumping, the hook engages bar 22 of the loop, which upon further downward tipping of the car, arrests the locking bolt, withdrawing it from socket 17 until oset 15 engages bearing 18, after which the entire weight of the end gate is suspended and its downward maintained in operative post-ion at all times,
with the limited vertical movement for locking and unlocking, either in the exact form shown, or any equivalent construction for the same effect.
What I claim is:
l; In a dumping car of the class `described having a forward and downward movement and provided at its front with a bolt socket, the combination therewith of an outwardly and upwardly swinging end gate having a vertically arranged slidably mounted locking and lifting boltfor engaging said socket provided with an upper forwardly extending terminal hook, means on the door providing limited guiding movement for the locking bolt,
and a freely suspended swinging loop adapted to engage the terminal hook of the bolt provided with endmost fiexible supports for holding the loop in hook-engaging position. Y
2. A forwardly and downwardly movable dumping car having abolt socket at its front lower floor portion, an outwardly and upwardly swinging end gate pivotally connected with the sides of the car, vertically arranged of'fset' spaced-apart bearings on the end gate, a correspondingly offset locking bolt mounted for limited movement in said bearings and having a lower socket engaging terminal and an upper forwardlyV extending hook, and a triangular-shaped hook-arresting frame provided with a middle and opposite lateral flexiblev supporting devices for holding the loop in hook-engaging position.
3. A forwardly and downwardly movable dumping Car having a bolt socket at its front lower floor portion, an outwardly and upwardly swinging end gate pivotally connected with the sides of the car, vertically arranged ofset spaced-apart bearings on the end gate, a correspondingly offset locking bolt mounted for limited movement in said bearings and having alower socket engaging ter minal and an upper forwardly extending hook, a freely suspended swinging` loop adapted to engage the hook to first withdraw the bolt from the socket and to then arrest downward movement of the end gate, and a central and endmost supporting chains for holding the loop in hook-engaging position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
JOHN A. HEBB.
