This invention relates to improvements in ice-shaving and cutting machines or that type of machine for shaving ice used in soft drinks and the like, and has for its object the provision of a machine of this character which is capable of cutting and shaving the ice very quickly and practically.
One of the particular objects of the invention is the arrangement of the cutting or shaving knives in conjunction with a means for causing a block of ice to be held firmly thereagainst whereby a block of ice is shaved without undue attention by the operator.
Other objects include the disposition of a n'iotor for revolving the knives, platform for the ice and means for holding a block of ice while being cut and deposited upon the platform.
The above objects will be clearly brought out and readily understandable from a perusal of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and wherein:

Proceeding in accordance with the drawings and wherein similar numerals designate the various parts, 1 denotes the base of the machine, attached'to which are the uprights or angle irons 2 and which support the housing, including the glass panes 4:. A door is provided at- 5. On the interior of the housing is a platform 6 for the shaved ice, the platform having perforations 7 and a drain spout or outlet 8.
The housing includes a covering ,9, adjacent to which is a support 10 for a motor 11, the motor being placed in a vertical position with respect to its shaft so that its drive gear wheel 12 on the shaft 13 may mesh properly with an annular or ring gear 14. Both gears as clearly depicted in Figure 4 are enclosed in a trackway 15, bolted to the housing at 16 and affixed to the trackway are a plurality of rollers 17 upon which the gear 14 rides. Asshownin Figure 5 the gear wheel is provided with openings 18 and along one side of each opening at '19 there is an enlargement with a properly slanted surface longitudinally of the slit or opening to permit the attachment thereto of the'knives 20. These knives, four in number, are so arranged that their cutting edges project sufiiciently above the body of'the gear 14 to engage and cut and shave a block of ice I, which is disposed in a receptacle 21.
This receptacle is firmly seated to and attached to the top 9 or covering of the house ing and so arranged thereon that its lower end which is open registers with an opening O in the covering 9. The receptacle 21 is also firmly braced to the base by members 22 and the motor 11 is thus partly supported by the receptacle wall.
A covering 23 has a central aperture through which a rod 24: with knob is adapted to be moved up and down in holding the ice firmly against the knives in the shaving operation of the ice. This rod includes a bottom member 24 with relatively sharp spikes 25 to engage the ice. The rodand its member 2 1 are fairly heavy so that sufficient pressure will be brought to bear upon the ice and maintain it firmly against the revolving knives. To stabilize the rod and its member in vertical movement in the receptacle there are provided rollers 26 which bear against the walls of the receptacle. The dotted lines in Figure 3 indicate the uppermost position of the member 24*, resting upon the block of ice I. The receptacle is also provided with a door 27 to prevent the block of ice from being forced out while the shaving-operation is being performed.
It should be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction here shown, but is capable of modifications, in keeping with the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In an ice shaving machine. the combination of a housing provided with a cover having an opening therein, an annular trackway secured to said housing adjacent said opening, rollers mounted on the inner annular face of said trackway, an annular gear wheel riding on said rollers and having a rim portion provided with gear teeth formed on its outer periphery, said rim projecting outwardly to form a shoulder to overhang and rest upon the upper edge of said trackway, said annular gear wheel during rotation being held against axial movement by engagement oi the upper edge of the outer rim circumference with the under side of said cover and by engagement of the lower edge of said shoulder with the upper edge of said trackway, said trackway being detachably secured to said housing not only to permit said annular gear wheel to be rotatably non-axially movably confined between said traekway and cover but also to permit-assembly and disassembly of said trackway, annular gear wheel and cover when desired, means for driving said gear wheel comprising a drive gear mounted on said trackway and provided with teeth meshing with the teeth of said annular gear wheel a plurality of cutting knives mounted on said annular gear wheel for shaving the under surface of a block of ice, and means "for non-rotatively holding said block of ice in Contact with said knives.
