BOX COVER'AND METHOD 0F MAKING THE SAME.

This invention relates to a cover for paper boxes and the like and to a method of making the same. e
One object of the invention is to provide a box cover of the character specified of novel and improved construction Which is strong, durable, and which may be manufactured at minimum expense. v
A further object of the invention is to provide a cover for paper boxes and the like, and particularly boxes of the character of shoe boxes in Vwhich the outer surface of the coverisfinished by a finishing sheet adhesively applied to and covering the outer surface of the cover, which is strong, durable, and which lends itself particularly to economical production by automatic machinery.
Further objects of thek inventionl are to providev a novel and economical method for the production of the improved cover. y
Thesev and other features of the invention Will be hereinafter described and particularly defined in the claims at the end of this specification. e l Y v Y p The drawings illustrate the invention as embodied in a cover for a shoe box, and also illustrate several steps in the method ofA producing the same, and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective illustrating the application of the Afinishing sheet to a strip of the fibrous material from which the body portion ofthe cover is formed; Fig. 2 ,is a cross-section taken on the line2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective of one of the blanks formed from the strip shown in Fig. 1; Figs. 4 and 5 are cross-sectional views illustrating the formation of the end pieces employed in the constructionof the boxcover; Fig.' 6 is a perspective of a portion of the box .cover in the stage of its completion, wherein one of the end pieces 'is affixedto the end flap and to the sides; Fig. 7 is a vertical section through the end of t-he box cover illustrated in Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a perspective of one end of the completed box cover;-Fig. 9 is a vertical section through one end of the completed box cover; and Fig. 10 is a cross-section on line 10-10 of Fig. 3.
The Y present invention is particularly adapted to be embodiedin covers kfor paper boxes, such as shoeboxes and the like, Wherein the cover is provided with a finishing sheet of paper for finishing the outer surface thereof. In practice these boxes and covers are made'of cardboard, pasteboard, or similar material, usually of a darker color, such as gray, and it isrdesirable that a White or other colored finishing sheet of paperor similar material be afiixed to the outer surfaces of both the cover and the box to enhance the appearance thereof and to impart to the box or cover certain additional strength. At the present time most of the box covers are covered with the finishing sheetjby hand, and it is one of the aims of the present invention to provide a construction of box cover VWhich may be produced from blanks of the cardboard or otherzmaterial, to which the covering or Vfinishing sheet is aliixed prior to the formation of the cover, and preferably While the blank is in a substantiallyflatform. By aflixing the covering sheet in this manner, relatively -simple mechanism may be employed in affixing the finishing sheet to the blanks, enabling rapid and economical production to be attained. l y
Referring tothe dravving, sheet of cardboard, pasteboard or the like, from Which the body portion and sides ,of the present cover are formed, and in accordance With the preferred methodof manufacturing 10 ,represents va the present box cover, a finishing sheet 12 of paper or other finishing material, is adhesively affixed to one surface ofthev sheet 10. The finishing sheet 12 is preferably of slightly greater Width than the cardboard sheet 10 and the side portions 14 thereof are folded over and adhesively affixed to the opposite surface thereof, forming finished side edges 15. In practicethese operations may, if desired, be performed by relatively simple machines of standard construction, and conveniently both the cardboard or like sheet 1() for forming the body portion and the sides of the cover, and the finishing sheet 12 may be drawn as Webs from supply rolls 16, 17, as illustrated in Fig. l, and the finish- Y.

Afterthe finishing sheet 12 has thus been applied to the sheet 10, individual cover blanks 20 are cut therefrom. Each cover blank 20 for forming the body portion and sides of the cover is preferably shaped, as illustrated in Fig. 2, having side portions 21, 22, each provided at their ends With triangular-shaped tabs 24 which, in the finishedv product, are adapted to be folded around the corners of the cover and to constitutea portion of the end Walls thereof. The cover blank 2O is also provided with an end fiap 25 at each end thereof, and the end flaps 25 are preferably made of a Width equal to the depth of the box cover and each flap 25 is formed of a shape such that when folded into a position at substantially 'ght angles to the top of the cover, thel edges 27 thereof cooperate with the edges 28 ofthe triangulartabs`24 to forman end Wall of the cover. l v
Provision-is made for connecting the tabs 24 and end flap" 25 at each end-of the box cover to formthe completed ends of thev cover, and for this purpose, in accordance With the preferred method, an end piece 30 is secured to the outer side of the end tabs 24 and end flap 25 in the manner illustrated Wall,
in Fig. 6. Thereafter the upper portion 31 of the end piece is folded over and afxed to the-inner faces of the end flap 25 and the tabs 24 producing a construction of end illustrated in section in Fig. 9.
In order that the outer surface of the end pieces 8() may beprovided with a finishing sheet, I prefer to adhesively afiix a finishing sheet'40 to one surface of each Vend piece 30, priorto the incorporation of the end piece-With the cover. The finishing sheet 40 may and preferably Will be applied to leach end piece 30 While the latter is in a substantially'fiat condition, such kas is illustratedv in Fig.-4. g In order to minimizefwastage of the material comprising the finishing` sheet 40, I prefer to utilize a sheet of such Width thatA when applied to the outer surface of the end piece, one edge por- '1. tion V41 projects beyond that edge 42v of the end piece Which is to comprise the lovver edge of the outer portion of the end vpiece inthe finished box, and so that the second Vedge portion 43 of the finishing sheet Will 'i extend down sufficiently upon the inner faces ofthe completed'end Walls of the box cover to match the sideportions 14 thereof, and to thereby impart to the interior of the finished box cover 'a neat and trim appearance in this respect. An end piece having a finishing sheet applied in this manner 1s illustrated in cross-section in Fig. 4, and-the next step in the operation consists in folding over the projecting edge 41 and aifixing it to the opposite surface of the end piece, producing an end piece of the construction illustrated in Fig. 5. An end piece thus -iinished is then adhesively afiixed to the out- Y 'er surface of each end flap 25 and its coopverating tabs 24, vas illustrated in Fig. 7 and thereafter the'upper portion 31 of each end piece is folded over the end flap 25 and tabs 24 and is preferably adhesively affixed to the .in Fig. 10 as comprising paper strips folded over the side edges and adhesively affixed to the opposite surfaces of the sides of the box cover. In the completed cover the stay strips 48 are concealed from View by the finishing sheet 12 and the sidel portions 14 thereof. The stay strips extend to the tabs 24 so that when the box cover is produced the stay strips extend around the corners of the box cover and serve to reenforce the same. The stayv strips, together With the finishing sheet 12, comprise double portions connect-` ingthe tabs 24 With the sides of the box cover, and being folded around the corners they operate to produce a very strong construction of corner.
The present construction of cover may be economically manufactured, not onlyv because the operations involved in the manufacture thereof are simple, but also because of the fact that Wastage of stock is reduced to a minimum. When the invention -is embodied in box covers in which the outer surface, ered With a finishing sheet, then considerable economy in the manufacture of the box over the ordinary hand Wrapping methods may be accomplished because 'of the fact that both body portion and sides'and also end pieces may be formed from strips of material Which have been covered While in flat form. In this manner simple forms 'of sheet applying and folding mechanism may body portion, sides and ends are covbe employed to cover these strips With the finishing sheet, and then the body blanks and' end pieces may be economically and rapidly died out, and thereafter the `box cover assembled in a Vsimple and economical manner, doing away entirely with the hand operation heretofore employed in applying the finishing sheets to the cover. A cover for paper boxes and the like comprising a body portion provided with sides folded at substantially right angles thereto, triangular shaped end tabs integral Withsaid sides and folded around each corner of the cover to constitute a part of the of the sides of the box, and separate end pieces for each end of the cover secured to the outer surfaces of the end flaps and end tabs and folded thereover and aiixed to the inner surfaces thereof.
2. A cover for paper boxes and the like comprising a body portion having sides folded at substantially right angles thereto, and a flat portion between the sides constituting the top of the cover, an end flap extending from the end of each side portion, an yendiiap extending from each end of the top forming portion, all of said flaps being folded to form the ends of the box and being of a width such that the upper edges thereof 15 lie substantially in the plane of the upper edges of the sides of the box, and separate end members having finishing material covering the outer surface thereof adhesively aflixed to the outer surfaces of each set of 20 Invtestimony whereof I have signed my 25 name to this specification.
