ADJUSTABLE VISE-LOCKING SCREW.

My invention relates to improvements in vise locking screws such as are used for type setting machines.
In type setting machines as used at the present time a vise frame-is pivoted to the main frame in such a manner that the upper horizontal member of the vise frame may be brought into contact with the stationary member running substantially parallel therewith and may be locked to the stationary member by. mansof a pin threadedly engaging the movable member and be interlocked with the same by means of flanges broughtinto registry by a turning motion of the pin the turning motion serving at the same time to draw the two members together. My invention relates particularly to this pin. As constructed at the present time it frequently happens that due to wear upon the flanges the turnin motion does not bring about proper engagement of the two parts and it also happens that these flanges sometimes break off, in either case necessitating renewal of the'pin. My invention provides means whereby the position of the flange may be adjusted so that the turning pin will always effectively engage the parts properly and it has for its object a provision of means of this character which will be cheap and simple in construction and very eflic-ient in operation.
A further object of my invention is to provide a pin of the above character with an auxiliary or reserve flange so that in theYevent the first flange becomes badly worn'or broken the same may be cut off and the auxiliary flange used thereby practically doubling the effective usefulness of. said pin.
Another object is to provide in apin of the above character means for adjustably maintaining the turning handle in any desired position relative to 'said pin.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter, and while I have shown and will describe the preferred form ofmy invention, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to such preferred form, but that various changes and adaptations may be made there in without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Referring to the drawings: 7 indicates the assembled vise fraine the particular construction of which is not of interest and'forms no part of the present invention. 'Fra n'ie 7 is pivotally supported at 8 to a stationary frame 9 and is adapted to have itsupper end secured to frame 9 by means of the pins 10 and 11..
Inasmuch as both pins are similar in construction, with the exceptlon that one; may be threaded right hand and the other left hand,
only one will be described. Provided near one end of pin 10 isan enlarged portion 12' which provides a shoulder 13,-against which shoulder bears the outer end of an'exteriorly threaded sleeve 14. The interior diameter of sleeve 14 is of a size to snugly fitpin 10 but adjustable: around the same, and provided around the outer end of said sleeve are a plurality of holes 15 equally spaced apart through which is adapted to pass a securing pin 16. A screwthreaded aperture 16 is provided in pin 10 forthe reception of the thread-' ed end of pin 16. Pin 16 is provided with a slot 17 for the reception of a screwdriver, orany other suitable material may be provided for the removal of said pin 16. Provided in the outer endof pin 10 and extending longitudinally thereofis a socket 18 and extending transversely through pin 10 near the outer end of this socket is'an aperture 19. Slidably mounted in aperture 19 is a turning handle; 20 on each end of which is provided a collar 21 bymeans of which pin 20 is-held against accidental displacements. Mounted within recess 18 between the inner end of said recess and handle 20is a coil spring 22 adapted to hold handle 20 in any adjusted position lengthwise relative to pin 10. The inner end23 of pin '10 is reduced in size and projectingfrom this reduced portion concentric therewith are a plurality of spaced flanges Ql and 25. Y Y
In the use of my locking pin the same will first be assembled as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and is then threadedly assembled with the pivoted vise frame in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
When the vise frame is moved about its pivot 8 towards the stationary frame 9 the curately engage and register with the segmental flange 26 when the longitudinal and rotary motion of the pin 10 is limited by this engagement of the flanges. Thus it is seen the full strength of the flanges is utilized in securing the vise-frame to the stationary frame because the adjustable relationship between the sleeve 14 and the pin 10 insures a full grip of the flange 24 on the flange 26.
As the thickness of the flanges 24 and 26 becomes reduced, owing to prolonged use, the flange 24 will not be positioned in accurate registration with flange 26 when the members are in lock up position; but by merely adjusting the position of the sleeve 14 relative to the pin 10 accurate registration of the flanges 24 and 26 can be restored.
Should the flange 24 become broken or otherwise impaired this flange and a portion of the projecting end 23 of pin 10 can be removed, thereby making it possible to substitute the flange to replace the removed flange.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
1. A vise-locking pin comprising a cylindrical body member, a segmental flange projecting from the body member, an exteriorly screwthreaded sleevev adjustably mountedupon the body member, a securing member extending through the sleeve and engaging the body member to secure the sleeve upon the bodymember, and a handle member carried by said body member.
2. A vise-locking pin comprising a cylindrical body member; a segmental flange projecting from the body member, an exteriorly screwthreaded sleeve adjustably mounted upon the body member, a securing member extending through the sleeve and threaded into the body member to lock the sleeve upon the body member, and a handle member carried by the body member.
3. A viselocking pin comprising a cylindrical body member, a segmental flange projecting from the body member, an exteriorly screwthreadedsleeve mounted upon the body member, said sleevehaving a plurality of upon body member and positioned to engage the annular shoulder, means for adjustably securing the sleeve to the body member, and a handle carried by the body member.
' 5. The combination with a movable element having a threaded aperture formed therein, a stationary element having a recess, and a segmental flange carried by the stationary element and extending into the recess, of a cylindrical pin, a segmental flange projecting from the pin and adapted to operably engage the segmental flange 0f the stationary element, an exteriorly screwthreaded sleeve mounted upon the pin and operably engaging the threaded aperture formed in the movable member, a securing member extending through the sleeve and locking the sleeve in adjusted relation to the pin, and a handle member carried by the pin.
6. The combination with a movable element having a threaded aperture formed therein, and a stationary element having a recess into which a segmental flange extends, of a cylindrical pin, a segmental flange proj ecting from the pin and adapted to operably engage the segmental flange of the stationary element, an exteriorly screwthreaded sleeve mounted upon the pin and operably engaging the threaded aperture formed in the movable member, means for adjustably' securing the sleeve to the pin, an enlarged portion formed integrally with the pin and defining an annular shoulder which engages the sleeve to hold the sleeve against longitudinal motion on the pin, and a handle member carried by the pin.
