FLOOR DRAIN TRAP.
Application led February 15, 1929. Serial No. 340,093.
My .invention relates to floor drain traps oit that type wherein a depending baille plate is vertically slidable into yand out of contact with its annular seat. This type automatic baille plate has been heretofore objectionable because the baille plate rod became immovable in its vertical guideway because oit 'the accumulation, upon the portion ot the vrod adjacent the baille plate, ol foreign matter, such as grease, soap and sand, carried by the passing water. This condition oit the water common where waste is supplied from the floor oi" a shower bath, or of a garage.
The essential objects of my invention are to overcome the above defect of operation, and to attain this end by a simple construction and at a minimum of expense. To the above ends primarily my invention consists in lsuch parts and in such combinations oil parts as tall within the scope ot the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part et this specification.
Figure 1 is a central vertical. section ot my novel device,
Figure 2, a transverse section ot the same on line 2--2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3, an enlarged vertical section of the movable baille parts.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the views.
My trap consists of a casingcomprising a substantially cylindrical body 5 having intermediate its length and integral therewith an internal annular flange G in which is a bearing ring 7 supported by an external annular shoulder 8 resting upon the flange. An opening 9 formed by the flange and ring constitutes a passage between the upper and lower chambers 10 and 11 respectively in the body. An inlet 13 in the bottom portion of the body is formed by the horizontally disposed lower end 14 of a vertical inlet pipe 15 whose upper end is integral with the top 17 oil? the body, and with a vertically disposed elliptical extension 18 integral with the body, and forming a chamber 19 above the latter and the pipe. An external cupped annular liange 22 locks the extension in a cement iioor 23. A strainer plate 24 having openings 25 is attached to the top of the extension by screws 2G.
From an outlet opening 28 in the upper por tion 01" the body extends an outlet or discharge pipe 30 leading to the sewer. The body is provided with a threaded opening 32 adapted to receive the threaded periphery 34 ot a detachable cover 35 l'lush with the top of the body. Centrally ot the 'cover is a polygonal projection 37. 'The cover and projection have a vertical cylindrical recess or bore 38 extending to the chamber 10. In the top of thepprojection is a threaded opening`39 to receive the threaded end 41 ot a guide sleeve 42 concentric with the recess 38 and laterally spaced from the wall of the projection to. lorm an annular space or recess therebetween.
A convexe concave baille plate 45 rests upon the seat formed by the tlan ge 6 and ring 7, and has internal with its central portion a vertical shoulder 47 provided with an external thread 48. Integral with the top of the shoulder is a post 49 of less diameter than the shoulder projecting a short distance within the guide sleeve 42 and slidable in the latter. The top of the post is normally spaced from the lower end of sleeve 42. A guard tube 51 has upon its lower end an internal thread 52 engaging the thread 4S of the shoulder 47. The tube 51 slidably embraces the sleeve 42 and extends into the guideway formed by the annular bore 38 in the cover, but is spaced from the upper end of the latter.
The waste water with its accumulated impurities and adhesive matter descends from the top surface of the lloor 23 through the strainer plate 24, chamber 19, inlet pipe 15, and upwardly through the seal chamber 11, upper chamber 10, and outlet pipe 30. In its upward course the pressure of the water elevates the baH'le plate 45 from its seat. rIhe upward travel oli' the plate is limited by the contact of its shoulder 47 with the lower end of the guide tube 42. After the described movement oit the water the baille plate is returned to its seat by gravity where it prevents back pressure through the trap.
It will be observed that in no position of the baille plate, either at rest or during recip rocation, is the post 49 exposed to the foul water passing through or lodged in the chamber 10 because et the shielding etlect of the guard tube 51. Hence no clogging effeet between the post 49 and the guide sleeve 42 can occur to prevent proper action of the baille plate 45.
I claim 1. In a lioor drain trap, a body provided with an inlet and outlet, said body being provided with an opening spaced from the inlet and outlet, an annular seat in the body inter- Cil mediate the inlet and outlet, a Cover detaeliably mounted in the opening7 a guide sleeve on the cover, a post slidably mounted in the sleeve, a baille plate carried by the rod engageable with the seat, and a guard Vtube supported by the plate loosely surrounding the sleeve.
2. In a floor drain trap, a body provided with an inlet and outlet7 said body being provided with an opening spaced from the inlet and outlet, an annular seat in tlie body intermediate the inlet and outlet, a Cover detachably mounted in the opening, a guide Sleeve supported by the Cover Centrally thereo't', a battle plate engageable Witli the seat, a cylindrical shoulder centrally disposed upon the plate, a post upon the shoulder and disposed centrally thereof loose in the sleeve, and a. guard sleeve fast to the shoulder slidably engaging the sleeve.
3. In a floor drain trap, abody provided with an inlet and outlet, said body being provided with an opening spaced 'from the inlet and outlet, an annular seat in the body intermediate the inlet and outlet7 a cover detaeliably mounted in the opening, a vertical projection disposed upon the center of the post, sai d cover and post being provided with a vertical eavity, a guide sleeve fast to the end of the projection and laterally spaced therefrom to forni an annular guideway, a post slidably mounted in tlie sleeve, a battle plate carried by the rod engageable with the seat, and a guard tube supported by the plate enclosing the sleeve and slidable in the guideway.
ln testimony Whereoil I have affixed my signature.
