SPINNING Application filed October 19, 1928. sw rm. 313,612.
This invention relates to improved means for weighting the back draft rolls in a spinning frame, the same being more particularly applicable to a construction such as that illustrated in my prior Patents #1,619,985 and #1,619,986; and the object of the invention is to apply a weight to the back rolls independently of that applied to the front rolls and to preferably apply this weight in the form of a roll and in such a way as not to interfere with the positioning of the working faces of the adjacent draft rolls of theset so that they may be run just clear of each other and so permit an increased draft on a relatively coarse roving to draw the roving down to a relatively line yarn over the spacing of the usual draft rolls.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed outin the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevation of a set of draft rolls showing my improved weight roll as applied to the rear pair of draft rolls.
Fig. 2 is a top view of a set of these draft rolls with their weight roll and partly broken away.
Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic view showing one means of driving the three bottom rolls as set forth in my prior Patent #1,619,985.
Fig. 4 is a sectional end view of a set of draft rolls, the bottom roll of the intermediate pair being frictionally driven as set forth in my prior Patent #1,619,986, and to which I have shown my improved weight roll as applying pressure to the backpair of draft rolls.
It is found in the practical operation of spinning frames of advantage to provide means for applying the required weight to the back pair of draft rolls independent of the weight applied to the front pair of the set at the same time permit the use of relatively small draft rolls and also not to interfere with the positioning of the adjacent pair of rolls with their working faces to 'run just clear of each other, whereby a relatively coarse roving may be drawn down to a relatively fine yarn of uniform size; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of my invention and showing one means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished.
With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the frame in which the rolls are run, 11 and 12 the bottom and top back rolls, respectively. Between these two sets of rolls the intermediate rolls 15 and 16 are set both of which latter rolls are preferably of relatively small size and are preferably covered with leather.
These small intermediate rolls permit the back and front rolls to be set much closer togetherthan is usual in machines of this character. I
Instead of employing the old style suspended weight arm for applying pressure to both the back and front rolls simultaneously, I have found it of advantage to mount a weight roll 17- upon the top back roll 14: and to pro vide a shaft 18 in this-weight roll which is guided in the guideway 19 to rest its entire weight upon the top rolls of the back bar, by which construction this weight roll 17 may be of a diameter to apply just the required weightto these back rolls to produce the necessary nipping pressure on the character of sliver being operated upon.
By this construction, it will be seen that this weight does not in any way conflict with the applying of minimum size of roll neither does it conflict with the positioning of these several pairs of rolls so that their adjacent working faces may be run just clear of each other, by which construction many advantages are obtained over the setting of the draft rolls of spinning frames which are set widely spaced apart.
By employing the drive means illustrated in my prior patents above referred to I am enabled to drive these rolls in their position inlwhich their working faces run close to each 0t ier.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a spinning frame, front intermediate and back pairs of draft rolls, the working faces of adjacent pairs being set to run justclear of each other, means for driving said pairs at different speeds to draft the stock as fed from one pair to another, and a weight roll arranged to apply pressure to the top roll of the back pair.
2. In a spinning frame, front and back pairs of draft rolls all of substantially the same diameter, a pair of intermediate rolls between said front and back pair, the Working faces of said pairs being set substantially equally distant from each other, means for driving said front and back rolls at different speeds, and a Weight roll positioned to apply tension to the top roll of the back pair.
3. In a spinning frame, front back and intermediate pairs of draft rolls, the Working faces of adjacent pairs being set to run just clear of each other, means for driving said rolls at different speeds, and a Weight roll resting upon the upper roll of the back pair.
4. In a spinning frame, front back and intermediate pairs of draft rolls, the Working faces of adjacent pairs being set to run clear of each other, driving means for said rolls, and a Weight roll resting upon the Working surface of the upper roll of the back pair to increase the force of the nip between that pair.
5. In a spinning frame, front back and illtermediate pairs of draft rolls including a top and a bottom roll in each pair, the rolls of the frontand back pairs being of substantially the same diameter, and set substa-ntiallyan equal distance apart and a greatly enlarged Weight roll resting upon the top roll of the rear pair to increase the force of the nip between that pair.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHARLES MORTON.
