Application filed December, 1928. Serial 110,826,379.
My present invention has reference to a rotector device designed especially for use y men working in steel mills and particularly to riveters in such mills, and is designs to prevent sparks from burning the workmans face or forehead.
A further and important object is the provision of a device for this purpose in w ich a forehead piece has hinged to the lower corners thereof, in a novel manner,.a shade which carries go gles so that the shade may occasion require without necessitating the removal of the device from the head of the user, and further wherein the headpiece is lined to prevent excessive heat and the shade is so constructed that perspiration or sweat from the user will be directed away from his eyes and from the goggles carried b the shade and thereby prevent the user rom becoming blinded by perspiration.
A still further and important object is the manner in which the brim of the shade is hingedly secured to the forehead piece so that the shade may be raised and sustained at desired inclinations on the forehead piece,
and further wherein the limit of the downward movement of the shield, that is, to operative position, is limited by the contact with a rim or roll on the lower edge of the forehead piece.
A still further object is the provision'of a device for this purpose which maybe easily and quickly arranged upon the forehead of the user, adjusted to compensate for different sizes of users and firmly held positioned.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the improvement is better understood, the invention consists in the im rovement hereinafter described and defiinltely claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the application of the improvement.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the improvement.
Figure 3 is'a sectional view approximately on the line 3--3 of Figure 1, the goggle carrying shield being raised with the supporting brim therefor.
Figure 4 is a somewhat enlarged sectional view approximately on the line 44 of Figure 1.
The forehead piece "of the improvement,
indicated by the numeral 1, is arched both wise shaped so .that the same will snugly be recelvedon theforehead of the user. forehead piece 1 has its edges rolled, as at 2,
the said roll providing what may be termed a mm and this rim engages and holds on the inner face of the forehead piece a lining 3 of velvet or the like. At its corners the forehead piece is provided with openings for the ower edge of the forehead piece is disposed transversely an d longitudinally and is other- The I directly above the eyebrows of the user and the rear edge of :the forehead piece covers I 'approxlmately one-third of the length of the head of-the user. The head of the user is covered by the usual leather head piece commonly worn by riveters in mills and else where. The corners of the forehead piece, above the lower rim-therefor, are each provided' with spaced slots and .are' slightly rounded inwardly, as at 6, between these slots. The slots have passed therethrough the offset ends 7 of metal plates 8. These metal-plates have screwed, riveted or otherwise secured on their inner face. dished metal springs 9. The spring is pivoted, as at 10, to the late 8. Overlying the plate 8 and engage by inwardly directed ears 11 on the ends of the said plate (which is, of course, passed through suitable openings there are the inner and widened ends 12 o the metal brim 13 of the improvement.
As disclosed by Figure 2 of the drawings the brim is wider than the head piece andextends a suitable distance therebeyond. The flange 14, which carries the enlargements 12, isconcaved to correspond with the shape of the head piece. A brim hinged as above described may be sustained at any desired angle on the head iece but the downward movement of the rim, that is, when the brim is brought to operative position, is designed to be brought into contact by the lower roll or rim 2' on the head piece 1 which not only lim- July 2, 1929.
