APPARATUS FOR USE WITH SOLE LAYING PRESSES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES Filed Nov. 26, 1925 Patented July 2, 1929. 1,719,375
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FEED JOHNSON. OF LEICESTER, ENGLAND. APPARATUS FOR U'SL fWITH SOLE-LAYLZNG PRESSES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Application filed November 26, 1926, Serial No. 150,923, and in Great Britain November 26, 1925.
This invention relates to apparatus for use shown therein is intended for use in connecin the repair and manutaciisie of boots and tion with a metal last, tor example 5. having shoes. a rectangular hole or socket and comprises in the repair and nmnutacture of boots an arm or bar 1 having at one end a butt 2, 5 and shoes. halt' soles and soles are frequently in which there is formed a rectangular hole attached by means ol' adhesive solution, or slot (3 to receive a metal strip or tongue 7. cement or the like. and t'or carrying out this Since ditlerent metal lasts may have sockets process there is usually employed a press ot ditl'erent sizes therein. one or more packwhich includes a screw or other pressure aping strips 8 of metal may be used in con- 1o plying member and a sole support ol resilient junction with the tongue so as to enable the o." semi-solid character. cti'ect'ive width of the latter to be varied as The object ol the present: invention is to required. For iustance,it'the device is to be provide improved means for use in conjuncused with a last having a socket requiring :1. -tion with a. press of the known type to enable projection of less width than that of the comi the metal lasts ordinarily stocked and used bined tongue and strips, one or more. of the by the repairer or mannt'acturer. to be emstrips 8 can be moved up into the butt to rc ployed in the. attachment; ot hall soles and duce the width ot the projection below the soles to boots and shoes in the manner at'orebutt for insertion into the socket. The id. tongue 7 and strips 8 are slidable lengthwise 20 Accordingly the invention consists of a in the butt 2 so that: they can be adjusted device which, solel by engagement with the therein in accordance with the depth ot the usual socket in the heel or adjacent part of a socket. such as 5. in the heel part of the last metal last. transmits the pressure exerted by and thereby enable the butt to make contact. the screw or other pressure-applying member as is preterred. with the top of said part (as ol the press to the, last for the purpose of shown in Figure 1) when the projection is pressing the work upon the support. inserted into the socket. A thumb screw 9 An important feature of the invention or eipiivalent is provided in the butt 2 for that the device is of such a Form as to enable tixing by a binding action the tongue and the pressure-applying member to act on it strips in position after adjnstmmit; It dcat dill'erent points in order that maximum sired the tongue may be tormed integrally pressure may be applied to the work at corwith the butt instead of being detachable respondingly ditl'c eut [H ilts:Ii'l'iii' lii!; {'lt11'0 therefrom. quireinents. The bar 1 or equivalent may be provided In the prcterrcd form of the invention the with a series of countersinks 13 or it may be 35 device consists of an arm, bar or equivalent grooved to receive the end of the pressurewhich is engaged by the aforesaid screw or applying screw or member which hasitsbearother pressure-applying member and has at ing in the cross bar 16 of the press supported one end a, butt which is t'oruied or titled with from the base lti". by pillars l6". 'hen, as an element for insertion into the hole or represented in l igure 1.tho device. last.and 9;) 40 socket in the heel or adjacent part of the work. e. a shoe 14 to which a, halt sole 15 last. 'hcn the said member is inserted into is to be applied. are inserted in the press, the the hole or socket the butt rests upon the heel pressure applying screw 17 may, by suitably part of the last and the arm. bar or equivalent positii'ining the work on the semi-solid sole extends horizontally over the forepart in a support 18 ot' the press. be tightened down 45 rigid condit ion tor transmitting the pressure upon the hat at any desired point thereon so as aforesaid. that maximum pressure may be applied to the In l'urther describing the invention referwork where most needed. ence will be made to the accompanyin draw It should be observed that the device hereings wherein in described in the form of a cantilever 50 Figure l is a side elevation of a sole-laying adapted to engage the last socket and extend press ol' the type before referred to with a, rigidly therel'rom for transmitting the presconvenient t'orm ol' the improved device in suretothelast solelyby means oi suchengageuse therein. ment. said device beingthereby distinguished Figure 2 is a side elevation. and trout pressure transmitting devices hereto- 55 Figure 3 is a plan of the said device per se. tore proposed for use in presses of the kind Referring to the drawings. the device referred to. which devices have engaged the work at another point, e. g. the torepart or heel seat. as well as the last socket. The improved device obviates the use of a toe rest or pad which is advantageous for reasons which will be manifest.
'hat I claim then is 1. For use in a sole-laying press having a pressure-applying member and a work support. a device to enable an ordinary metal last to be used in the sole-laying process. said device consisting of an arm provided with means tor engagement with the usual socket in the last and to tri nsniit. solely by such engagement. the pressure exerted by the said pressure-applying member. to the last to press the work upon the support.
2. For use in a sole press having a pressureapplying member and a work support, a device to enable an ordinary metal last; to be used in the sole-laying process, comprising an arm adapted to take the, pressure exerted by the aforesaid meinber. a butt on said arm having a hole formed therein. a tongue fitting into said hole. and means to secure the tongue in the butt said tongue being, adapted by en gagement with the usual socket in the last to form a connection between the last and the arm whereb v the latter can act as a cantilever to transmit the pressure to the last: for pressing; the werl; upon the support.
In testimon whereof I attix my signature.
FRED JOHNSON.
