Description

UNITEn STATES PrrrEN'rv CFFIGE.
WILLIE E. DEWEY, OF DELAVAN, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDMILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,925, dated January 11, 1876; application filed l September 16, 1875.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a windmill, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my windmill. Fig. 2 is a detailed section of a part thereof. Y
A is the ordinary frame or tower. B is the bed-piece, having projecting downward from its lower side a hollow tube orcone, U, which revolves freely with the 'vane E when it turns to the wind. From the back part of the bed- -piece B- projects upward and forward a curve,
B1, the upper end of said curve being connected with the front end of the bed-piece by a brace, B2. The whirling bed-piece D, Which is the main support for the head, is hung upon two hollow tapering pivots, a a', inserted in the bed-piece B and curve B1, as shown in Fig. 2. n is the upper pulley for the regulatin g-chain m. h is the pitman-rod, which passes through the hollow pivots a a', and is connected by a pitman, a, with a crank-pin, t', on the disk d, said disk being secured to the inner end of the wheel-shaft b, which passes through the hollow arm or bar D1 of the bed piece D. G is the wind-wheel. On top of the curve B1 is bolted a bracket, J, for the regulating-arm H, said arm being L-shaped and pivoted to said bracket. D2 is an Iarm projecting from the whirling bed-piece D, and connected by a rod, e, with the lower end of the arm H, and upon the upper end of said arm H is a weight, I, which tends to throw the mill out of gear( u( is\thre lower regulating-pulleyLover which the regulating-chain m passes. By pulling on this chain the mill may be thrown in gear ready for use. f
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. ThecombinationoflthebracketJ, weighted regulating-arm H, connecting-rod e, and whirling bed-piece D, with arm D2, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the bed-piece B, with curve B1 and brace B2, .the whirling bed-piece D, having tapering/pivots a a', tube C, pitman h, weighted regulating-arm H, and rodv e, connecting the arm H with the arm D2, all combined substantially as and for thepurposes herein set forth. L
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIE E. DEWEY. Witnesses:
