GRINDING HEAD OB ATTACHMENT.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a .,'l!1(illn, 1' attachment for electrical or compressed air motors or the like, and it relates more particularly to a novel grinding attachn'ient which presents a substantially plane moving abrasive surface.
My invention consists of a suitable housiugr having mounted. therein a main drivii'ig shaft and a main driving roll carried thereby, said driving shaft being adapted to be connected with a source of power such as the shaft of an electric motor or a compressed air motor, or to be coilnected to a, flexible shaft, of any suitable form, and a pair of suitably aligned idle rolls, and an aln'asive belt of a continuous character. passing over said driviue' roll and idle roll.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at pres I cut preferred by me, since the same has been that the various instrun'ientalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention not limited to the precise arrangement and orminization of the instruinentalities as herein shown and described.

In Figure 1 I have represented in dotted lines a source of motive power such as an electric motor, compressed air motor, or the like, to which the grinding attachment 2 of my novel construction is adapted to be applied.
The attaclnnent of my novel construction includes two generally parallel and spaced frame nlen'iliiers of plates :3 and 1;. respectively, which are maintained in spaced relation to each other by the transverse spacing 1nernhers 5 and 6, whichare preferably formed integ ally with one of the two plates, as for instance, the plate 3. The opposed plate is detachably secured to the spacing); members 5 and 6 by means of bolts 7 extending through correspondine holes 8 in the plate 1 and anchored in the corresponding threaded openings 9 in the spacing members 5 and (3.
The frame plate 1- is provided with a hollow boss 10 at its upper part, through which the main driving shaft 11 passes.
The boss 10 may be either plain as shown in Figures 1 and 2 or it may be provided with any suitable threaded or flanged means or devices, whereby it may be detachably secured to the housii r of an electric motor, coinpressed air motor, or the like.
The boss 10 is provided with an enlarged bore 12, within which a thrust ball bearing" 13 and a radial ball bearing; 14 are provided.
The frame plate 8 is provided with a corresponding bore 15 in alignment with the bore 12 in which a corresponding ball bearing 16 is disposed. The main driving shaft- 11 is carried by the inner races 17 and 18 of the ball bearings 14; and 16, respectively. The shaft 11 is provided. with a flange 19 which bears againstthe thrust hearing; 13, thereby to prevent any outward dis alacement of the shaft 11.
The driving roll 20 is carried by the shaft 11 and is keyed thereto by means of the key 21.. The main driving roll 20 is preferably made of a ligl'it metal such as aluminum, and is provided with the two outer flanges 22 and and a uniform covering or shell 24 of a resilient material such as rubber, or the like. The shafts and 26 carried at the two lower corners of the frame are parallel to the shaft 11 and are positioned with respect to the same as the base apices of an isosceles triangle.
The shaft QSextends through correspond ing holes 27 and 28 in the frame plates 3 and 1, respectively, and is secured therein by means of the locking nuts 29 threaded onto the ends of the shaft. The idle roll 30 may be either journalled directly upon the shaft 25 or may be carried by suitable ball bearings intermediate said shaft and the roll.
The idle roll 31 is likewisecarried by the shaft 26, either journalled directly upon the ably mounted in a pair ofcorresponding inclined channels 36 cut in the inner face of each of the frame plates 3 and 4, as shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7.
The shaft 26 extends through elongated slots 37 so as to permit an adjustment of the same. The yoke 33 is provided with a pair of opposed lugs r handle members 38 projecting laterally on each side thereof and extending through the elongated apertures 37 whereby said sliding yoke 33, together with the shaft 26 and roll 31 may be moved outwardly for purposes of adjustment.
Lock nuts 38 threaded on each of the opposed ends of the shaft 26 serve to lock the shaft 26 in the adjusted position.
A lower stationary guide member 39'is provided between the two idle rolls and 31 for the purpose of supporting the span of the abrasive belt intermediate said two idle rolls, thereby to cause said abrasive belt to travel in a straight line between said rolls. The guide 30 is provided with a plane bottom surface 40 and an inclined upper surface 41, which is so related to the incline of the channels 36, that when the shaft 26 is withdrawn upwardly in the channels 36 and slots 37, the roll 31 will clear the upper surface41 of the guide 39.
The guide 39 is provided with two upwardly extending terminal supporting brackets 42, which are secured to the lower edges of the two opposed frame plates 3 and'4, by a series of screws 43.
A handle member 44 is carried byan offset bracket 45 secured to the frame plate 4, in a position substantially in the center of the roll 20.
A shield orcover 46 is hingedly secured to the frame plate 4, by means of the pivot 47.
The abrasive belt 48 extends aroundthe driving roll 20 and the idle rolls 30 and ll, and is guided by the flanges 22 and 23 of the driving roll 20.
i The upper edge 49 of the frame plate 3 is lower than the corresponding edge of the frame plate 4 and is substantially in alignment with the edge of the flange 22.
VJ hen it is desired to remove the abrasive belt 28 from the machine, or when it is desired to put a new one on the same, it is merely necessary to withdraw or retract the shaft 26. In this retracted position of the shft 26 the abrasive belt is suliicientiy slack so as to slip right over the top of the frame plate 3.
To tighten up on the abrasive belt 48 it is merely necessary to move the shaft 26 on the outermost position and then to lock the same in said position.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A grinding attachment of the character stated, comprising a pair of spaced frame members, a drivingshaft extending transversely 0f the upper part of said frame mem hers, ournallc'd therein and. extending through one of said fame members, a driving roll carried by said driving shaft, a shaftextending transverselyof the lower part of said frame members, an idle roll carried thereby, a guiding channel in the lower part ofeach of said frame members, a shaft supporting yoke slidably mounted in said guiding channels, a shaft carried by said guiding yoke, a second idle roll carried by said shaft, an abrasive belt extending around said driving roll and said pair of idle rolls, and means to lock said last named shaft in any adjusted position.
2. A grinding attachment of the character stated, comprising a pair of spaced frame members, a driving shaft extending transverscly of the upper part of said frame members, iournalled therein and extending through one of said frame members, a driving roll carriedby said driving shaft, a shaft extending transversely of the lower part of said frame members, an idle roll carried thereby, a guiding channel in the lower part of each of said frame members, a shaft supporting yoke slidably mounted in said guiding channels, a shaft carried by said guiding yoke, a second idle roll carried by said shaft, an abrasive belt extending around said driving roll and said pair of idle rolls, means to lock said last named shaft in any adjusted position, and a stationary guide carried by said frame members intermediate said two idle rolls, adapted to support the span of the abrasive belt intermediate said two idle rolls.
