The present invention pertains to a sifter, more especially one designed for the sifting of flour for cakes and the like, though it will be understood that the same is useful for other purposes as well. Y f

iiinong the objects of this invention are to produce a. novel sifter having an improved action comparable to the old fashioned handsilter but much improved thereover; to provide a simple mechanism of the character stated; to provide anapparatus of the charactor indicated which is easy to manufacture and of inexpensive construction; tov provide an apparatus of the character indicated which will not readily get out of repair; and such further objects, advantages, and capabilities as will hereafter appear and as are inherent in the construction disclosed herein. My invention further resides in the combintion, construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing and, while I have shown therein what is now considered the preferred embodiment of my invention, I desire the same to be understood as illustrative only and not as limiting said invention.

In the drawing annexed hereto and forming a part hereof, Fig. l is an elevation showing a sifter in accordance with my invention; F ig. 2 is a plan view of the construction shown in Fig. l. l

Referring more in detail to the annexed drawing, numeral l denotes the handle which is provided with a forked head 2, the arms of which are turned up as indicated at 3 to furnish pivotal supporting means for the container 5. 'Irunnions t are located upon the external surface of the container 5, near the upper end thereof and support the container, pivotally, between the upper ends of the arms 3. It will be seen from this that the container is capable of swinging back and forth upon `these pivots and is in a condition of stable equilibrium with respect thereto.

On its lower end, the container has a flange 6 turned in to support a plurality of screens 7, any desired number of which may be placed in the container. For example, if it is desired to have the our sifted four times, then four screens would be placed in the container. If it is desired to sift the flour a larger orsmaller number of times, tlienfa larger or smaller number of sifting Lelements will be placed therein.

In order to pivotally mount actuating means upon the head of the handle 1, a boss is .formed upon one of the arms thereof and this is perforated for the reception of the bolt- 8. Having `now described my invention, I claim:

l. A sifter comprising a container for powdered or granular material, a handle pivoted thereto so that the container may be' caused to swing with relation to the handle, and cooperating means connecting the handle and container whereby the latter may be'actuated to swing with relation to theformer.
