UNITED STATES GUY V. BENNETT, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
WIRE TWISTER.
Application filed October 24, 1927.
This invention relates to a wire twister, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth a device of the class 1'c ferred to for expeditiously twisting lengths of wire into stays or braces for use in connec tion with cement forms employed in concrete building constructions or other purposes.
Further obj ects of the invention are to pro vide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a wire twister which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, thoroughly eflicient in its use, conveniently operated, and inexpensive to manufacture.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a wire twister in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is an elevation of the bit element forming a part of the device.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the bit element.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a top plan view illustrating one of the wire stays or braces twisted from a length of wire by a twisting device in accordance with this invention.
A wire twisting device, in accordance with this invention, includes a twister in the form of a bit and a brace for rotating the twister for the purpose of acting on the wire to twist the same into tie or brace form. The twister which is referred to generally at A Comprises a circular disk 1 providing a head member and formed with a pair of spaced, aligning openings 3, 4 arranged at the transverse diametrie center of the disk 1. The disk is of uniform thickness. The axis of the disk is positioned between and spaced from the opening.
Formed integral with the inner face of the head member 1 at the diametric center thereof is a rectangular head 5 of a shank 6 provided with a polygonal shaped inner terminal Serial No. 228,449.
7 adapted to engage in a correspondingly shaped socket 8, formed in one end of a brace element 9 of known construction. The head 5 extends upon a diametric line, with respect to the disk 1 at right angles to the diametric line upon which the openings 3, 4 are located. The head 5 is positioned between and spaced from the openings 3, 4 and is of a length slightly less than the diameter of the disk 1. The ends of head 5 are equally spaced from the ed go of disk 1.
The ends of the wire are adapted to be passed through the openings 3, 4, as illustrated in Figure 1 and the twister is then rotated by the brace 9 for the purpose of twisting the length of wire to provide the tie or brace 14. The ends of the length of wire which are extended through the openings 3, 4 are indicated at 11, 12 and the twisted portion of the wire at 13.
The disk 1 is of a thickness whereby length of the openings 3, 4, is such as to prevent the slipping through of the end terminal portions 11, 12 of the wire when the latter is twisted. After the necessary length of twist 13 has been made in the wire, by rotating the twister in the opposite direction, it can be readily removed from the terminal portions 11. 12 of the wire.
The twisters or bit elements can be sold in sets, each set formed with a pair of openings of different diameters for particular sized wire. A single brace 9 will be common to the bits of the set.
In Figure 5, a pair of ties or braces 14 are shown in connection with a plurality of from members 15.
It is thought the many advantages of a wire twister, in accordance with this invention, for expeditiously twisting a length of wire to provide a stay or brace, can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Vhat I claim is A wire twister consisting of a rotatable circular disk of uniform thickness formed with and having aligning with the diametric center thereof a pair of spaced, aligning openings and with said center positioned between and spaced from said openings, said 0 enings providing for the passage of the enc s of the wire to be twisted, and a shank having a rectangular head at one end integral with the inner face of the disk diametrically of the latter, said head having its ends arranged in proximity to the edge of the disk and positioned between and spaced from said openings, said head extending on a diametric line, with respect to the disk at right angles to the diaineti'ie line on which the openings are 10- eated, and said shank having means at its other end for connection to a rotating means therefor.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
