IMPROVEMENT IN FISHING-HOOKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,697, dated January 4, 1876; application filed I November 20, 1875.

To all whom. it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES H. PLACE, of Gloucester, in the county of Essex and State of. Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Squid-Jiggers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, and exact description of the construchad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification. and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. I

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of my improved jigger, partly finished, with the thimble for holding the pins in position while Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the thimble, Fig. 3, a view of the jigger after coming from the mold. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of the jigger with cap attached, partly finished. I Fig. 5 is an end view of the cap with pins, and Fig. 6 is a view of the jigger when finished and ready for the market.

This invention has relation to that class .of devices for catching squids' orsmall fish to be used for bait.

Previous to my invention, so far as I am aware the pins or pointed spurs have been securedto and around the'lower end of the jigger by a cord or twine. This process has proven a very tedious one, as it has been found exceedingly difficult to retain the pins in their proper relation to each other while they are being secured by the twine or thread, thereby greatly adding to the cost of their manufacture. Another very great objection also presents itself, resulting from the continuous breaking or rottening of the thread by its exposure to the water, rendering the jigger ina very short time entirely worthless for the purpose intended.

The object of my invention, therefore, is to I remove these objections and produce a jigger that will not be afi'ected by exposure to the water, and at the same time greatly reduce the cost in their manufacture; and to accomplish this end the invention consists of a jigger in which the pins or spurs are permanently secured by casting the metal around them during the process of forming the body, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents the body of the jigger, formed of lead or other suitable metal, having a wide base, 0, against which the pins or pointed spurs b are brought during the process of bending them at the desired angleafter the metal has been cast around them. The body A is cast with a central spur or bolt, 0, over which is secured a cap, B,'for clamping the pins and keeping the lower portion in their proper relative position. In the process of manufacturing my improved jigger a metal thimble, O, is employed, having an annular opening, d, and a central opening, 6, the pins being placed within the openin g d, with their points downward, after which the metal is cast around them during the process of forming the body A, the central opening e of the thimble forming the bolt 0. The thimble is then withdrawn, and the pins are then bent around, as illustrated in Fig. 4, exposing the bolt c, and allowing the cap B to he slipped over the same, after which the cap 13 and bolt 0 are permanently securedtogether. The pins are then bent around to the proper form, as illustrated in Fig. 6, and the body A, together with the cap, are painted or covered with any suitable coloring substance, thus completing the article for the market.

It willbe seen that, as the pins are in the metal solid, there is no danger or possibility of their becoming loose or pulled out, and as there is no fibrous material, such as thread or twine, employed in securing the pins tothe body of the jigger, the water or fish gurry will have no efi'ect in injuring the same.

Having now fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is

1. As anew article of manufacture, a squid jigger, the pins or pointed spurs of which an secured to the body by casting the meta around them, substantially as and for the pur pose specified. Y 1

2. A squid-'igger, consisting of the body A with base a, bolt 0, pins or spurs b, and th cap B,constructed and arranged substantiall; as and for thepurpose set forth.
