CUSHIONING WEAR PLATE FOR BUFFER STEMS.

This invention relaties to cushioning wear plates for buffer stems.
An object of the invention is to provide combined wear and cushioning members to be utilized in connection with the center and side buffer stems of railway cars, and the like to eliminate noise due to vibration between the parts.
A further object of the invention is to provide cushioning members which include exterior metallic plates against which the stems bear during their' normal movements, said plates being connected together in such manner to permit limited relative movement i' thereof, and between which is interposed live rubber held under initial compression thereby, the plates bein normally held at the limit of their spreading movement and operating as wear plates which are yieldable to absorb vibration and eliminate noise.

In the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view, partly in horizontal section, of a bulfing device for railway cars embodying my invention. Figure 2 is a longitudinally vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a transverse, fragmentary, vertical section of the bufling mechanism center stem, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and showing the invention in elevation. And Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view substantially on line 4t-4 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral represents the end platform of a passenger car, provided with a central pocket 11 for the reception of a shock-absorbing mechanism, indicated at 12, against which the usual center stem 13 bears, the opposite forward end ofthe stem being adapted to abut against a plate 14 mounted upon the buffer proper, indicated at- 15. The buffer 15 is supported in position by means of side stems, one of which is shown at 16, there being a coiled spring 17 disposed about the side stem 16, .in the customary manner.
The center stem 13 and side stem 16 are slidably carried by the underframe of the platform 10, which may include a forward transversely extending partition indicated at 18, which is provided with a central substantially rectangular opening 19, defined by side walls 20 and 21, top wall 22, and bottoni wall 23, the center stem 13 extending through the opening 19, the stem being of a size considerably small r than the opening as best shown in Figure The bottom wall 23 of the casting is off-set somewhat to provide a shoulder 24, and the metal of the casting to the rear ot' the n' all 22 is provided with a slot 25. The support 26 on the underframe casting may be of any suitable character to support the rear end of the stem 13 while permitting operative movements thereof. The underf'rame also has a similar arrangement for supporting the side stem 16, and since the invention is applied. to the side stem in the same manner as to the center stem the description herein will be directed to the center stem only.
rllhe combined cushioning and wear members are best shown in Figures 2 and 3 and are indicated generally by the reference characters 26 and 27. The wear member 26 as shown is of U-shaped formation, including outer and inner plates 28 and 29. The outer plate 2S may be of any suitable metal, said plate including leg portions 30'-30, extending on opposite sides of the center stem 13, and a connecting portion 31 which extends across the top of the stem 13, the plate 28 being of a size as to fit snugly against the walls 20, 21 and 22 of the underframe casting. rlhe inner plate 29 is also U-shaped but smaller in size, so that the legs and connecting member thereof extend in spaced relation with respect to the legs and connecting portion of the member 28, the plate 29 being of such size as to afford suitable clearance for the stem 13. Interposed between the plates 28 and 29 is a pad of live rubber indicated at 32, said pad being substantially coextensive with the plates 28 and 29. The plates 28 and 29 are secured together by means of a plurality of rivets 33, each of which has its opposite heads countersunk in the outer surfaces of the plates 28H29, the rivets being slidably mounted in the plates so that said plates may be pressed toward each other against the pressure exerted by the pad of rubber 32, while the heads of said rivets limit spreading movement of the plates with respect to each other. The plate 29 is provided along its connecting portion with trai'isversely arranged, upwardly extending flanges 34C and 35, the flange 34 being arranged to abut against the face of the wall 22, while the other flange enters the slot 25 in the underframe casting. By this arrangement, longitudinal :ind Vlateral movement thereof is prevented.
