STEWART ROY ILLINGWORTH, OF BRYNFEDVIEN, BADYR, -WALES,'ASSIGNOR.TO THE ILLINGWORTH GARBONIZATION' COMPANY, LIMITED, 'MANCHESTER,-ENGLAND.
AGITATING APPARATUS.
Application filed July 16, 1928,'Seria1 No. 293,105, andin GreatzBritain June 15, 1927.
This invention relates to improvements in or modifications of the invention described in my former specification No.'1,593,698 which relates to the cooling of coke andapparatus therefor.
' The present invention relates more particle larly to the. construction of the cooling wagon as illustrated in Figures 58 ofmy former specification and which comprises a cylindrical chamber mounted to rotate on a carriage which can be moved to receive the discharge from any of the retorts or beneath the measuring hopper and the discharge pipe from the cistern.
Great difiiculty, however, is experienced in opening and closing the. door or doors of the cooling chamber, owing to the heat given outby the hot coke from the retorts, since it has to be operated by hand and it is the object of this invention to overcome this defect.
According to this invention, means is provided preferably mounted'on the carriage of the cooling wagon and adapted to be moved into or out of engagementwith the door or doors of the cooling cylinder or chamber, so that when in engagement therewith the door or doors, may be operated to open or close by the rotation in one or the other direc tion of the cooling chamber or cylinder.
In one construction these doors may be of the sliding type, arms or claw members being provided pivotally mounted on the carriage so as to be capable of movement into the path of the doors to engage therewith, the pivot point of said membersbeing such that when moved into engagement with the cylin der, they rest thereupon under the action of gravity. The claw members maybe carried on one shaft mounted in bearings on the car 'riage parallel to the axis of rotation of the cylinder and provided with a lever for moving the claw members into and out of the path of the doors, the claw members in the 7 normal or disengaged position resting against a cross bar on the carriage.
The claw members'may consist ofeurved arms, havinga curvature substantially equal to that ofthe cylinder, their outer ends being provided'with'T shapedslots adapted to engage and pass over a rod or the like on the doors, and having an outward or reverse curve from the slots to the tips. Preferably means provided for locking the doors in the sition.
i bees-i. on
" sliding doors, following which, further rotation in the desired direction, moves the-rods or the like into'one of the sides ofthe T shaped slot," when on further rotationof theycylinder the doors may be opened or closed as desired.
Thedisch'arge means for the steam orother gases from the cooling chamber or cylinder comprises a series of holes which are formed 1n the end thereof, an'da covering plate in which is a slotadapted to registerwith one or other of the holes to allow the passage of steam orother gases.
Preferably the slot is of suclra size that only the equivalent of one hole may register therewith, that is the circumferential length ofthe slot is equal to the distance between the centres of two holes. a
The plate which is preferably of;annular form may be positioned by means ofthree or n ore rollers'mounted on the end of'the cylinder and engaging the periphery of the plate so that the eylinderis free to rotate with respect thereto, fingers on the cylinder-engaging the face of the plate and causing it to bear against the end of the cylinder.
Preferably the plate is fixed or its movement restricted by means such as a stop or stops such that the slot always remains in its A'flange or deflection plate may be provided around the lower portion of the edge of the slot.
The construction relating to the means for permittingthe escape of steam and gases from the cooling chamber is claimed in a divisional application, Serial No. 335,314, filed January 26, 1929.
IA coolingwagon constructed in accordance with the, presentinvention thus forms a selfcontained unit and maybe provided with a Chamber or cylinder B the carriage thereof mounted on wheels C which run on a track D. E are the driving gears. F are doors on the periphery of the cylinder A. G are vent holes for the escape of steam from the cylinder.
The cylinder A is rotatably supported on rollers 1 mounted in hearings on plates 2 carried by the carriage B. l he rollers 1 are flanged and engage endless rails 3 at each end of the cylinder A, which is guided axially by side frames indicated generally at 5. Additional rollers 6 are provided for preventing any rolling movement-of the cy inder. 7 is a platform carrying the driving mechanism for rotating the cylinder and operating the earriage and provided with two sets of uprights S and 9. v
The outermost uprights 8 carry hand rails 1 and the innermost uprights 9 are formedwith bearings 10 for a shaft 11 on which curved arms forming the claw members 12 arosecured for operating the doors F.
lhe arms 12 are slotted at their ends as shown at 13 and are adapted when moved into engagement with the cylinder to engage pins or bars 1 1 carried in plates on the doors F, which are slidably opened (see Fig. It will be noted that the surfaces of the arm 12 extending away from the open side of the slot '13 are formed so as to present cam surfaces adapted to be engaged by the pin 14 upon rotation of the chamber to thereby raise the arm and then to automatically lower it to bring the pin 14 and the slot 13 into interlocking engagement.
In the modification shown in Figure 4 the arms 12 have pins 13 adapted to engage slots or recesses l t in plates 15. The arms 12 are as shown mounted in pairs jointed to one another by cross pieces 16 and rotatable about the shaft 11 which may be by hand by a lever X mounted on the shaft. lhe arms 12 in the unengaged position rest against a bar 17 secured to the uprights 9 which are extended upwardly for this purpose. It is to be observed that the projecting portions of the plate 15" are spaced to form a resultant groove 14;, and that these projecting portions are formed so as to present cam surfaces adapted to engage the pin 13 carried by the lever upon rotation of the chamber and to raise the lever and to allow the lever to be automatically lowered to bring the pin and the slot into interlocking engagement.
The doors F may be locked (see Fig. 1) by means of bolt pieces 18 mounted to slide in holes in the plates 15 and which, when in the locked position as shown engage slots 19 formed on the periphery of the cylinder. The bolts 18 are pivotally connected at their inner ends to operating handles 20, pivotally mounted on the doors F at 21 and movable to and fro to lock and unlock in guides 22.
In operation, the doors are first unlocked by moving the handles in the direction of the arrows. The arms 12 are now moved to engagethe cylinder A which is then rotated and the doors opened by engagement of the slots 13 with the bars 14:. I
Referring more particularly to Figure 2 the cylinder A is provided with a ring 23 adapted to close all except one of the steam vents G. The ring is freely mounted at its rim on rollers 2-1- mounted in bearings 25 having fingers 26 for holding the ring against the end of the cylinder. The ring is provided with a slot 27 of such a size that at any time a vent G or portions of two vents, substantially equivalent to a whole vent remain or remains uncovered. The vent G is shown uncovered. The slot 27 is provided with a de- Elector plate 28. 29 are stops to prevent rotation of the ring 23.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that y in using a cooling chamber constructed in. ac-
cordanee with my invention the opening of the door is necessary in order to admit a charge of coke may be accomplished by a slight rotation of the chamber, and the closing thereof subsequently accomplished by an equally slight rotation of the chamber in the opposite direction. Because of this construction, the opening maybe removed from registry with the door at a point near the top of the drum and then returned to registry with the door without moving the opening to a position be low the axis of the chamber. It will thus be seen that, if the chamber contains a charge of coke or a portion of a charge and it is desired to add more coke without discharging that already in the chamber, the door may be opened, the additional coke introduced, and the door then closed without its being necessary to bring the door into a discharging position.
It should be understood that apparatus constructed in accordance with the present invention is suitable for use with other materials and the invention is not limited to the treatment of coal and coke.
lVhat I claim is 1. In an agitating apparatus, the combination with a support; of an agitating cooling chamber mounted thereon for rotative movements in opposite directions and provided with an opening to admit a charge of mate rial, a sliding door carried by the chamber and adapted to close said opening; and looking means adapted to be moved into positive interlocking engagement with the door to hold it on rotation of the chamber in both of its opposite rotative movements to thus move said opening relative to the door.
2. In an agitating apparatus, the combination nu'th a support; of an agitating chamber mounted thereon for rotative movements in opposite directionsand provided with an opening to admit a charge of material; a sliding door carried, by the chamber and adapted to close said opening; and a pivoted lever movable into interlocking engagement with cooperating means onthe door to hold said door stationary on rotation of the door in both of its opposite rotative movements to thus move said opening relative to the door;
3. In an agitating apparatus, the combination with a support; of an agitating chamber mounted thereon for rotative movements in opposite, directions and provided With an opening to admit a charge of material; a sliding door carried by the chamber and adapted to close said opening; and locking means movable into engagement with the door, and having interlocking pin and slot connection therewith when in engaged position to hold said door stationary on rotation of the door in both of its opposite rotative movements to thus move said opening rela tive to the door.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name this 12th day of June 1928.
