CAR-DOOR LOCK.

This invention relates to improvements in devices through means of which a car door, for instance, a door swinging upon a hinge, may be tightly placed into closed position and secured, and particularly to a means in such a device for preventing discharged material from falling into the door closing and locking mechanism and for causing said material to flow beyond and fall free of such mechanism.
The device with which my invention is illustrated is one which has for its object to provide means which will be very convenient for manipulation in both closing and releasing the door, yet very effective in function, including the development of the very considerable pressure which may be required in forcing the door to a tight seating.
The present invention is illustrated in cnnect-ion with the type of device disclosed in the patent to Hindahl, No. 1,622,718, patented March 29, 1927, but it is to be understood that the advantages herein taught may be embodied in any similar mechanism where its value will be realized.
In devices of the type illustrated in the above identified patent, it has been found extremely desirable to provide means where by the discharged material falling from the side-0f a car will be prevented from falling upon and in between the parts of the locking mechanism, which, of course, would be undesirable for many obvious reasons, and accordingly, it is the principal object ofthc present invention to provide in combination with a locking mechanism for doors of, for instance, the above described type, means for preventing the discharged material from falling upon and being lodged in the parts of the locking device, which means will act as a guard covering the vital portions of the mechanism and, further act in the capacity of a shedding plate or surface for deflecting the material when discharged outwardly a distance suflicicnt to causeit to completely clear and fall entirely free of the locking mechanism.
It is another objectof my invention to provide such a guard plate and shedding sur face which will not interfere with the operation of the door or locking mechanism, and one which may be added thereto in a manner to cooperate and interfit with the parts whereby a completely operative combination is produced By referring to the above identified patent and the drawings disclosing the present invention, it will be noted that my invention is illustrated in connection with a device applied to a side discharge door mounted through means of an overhead hinge upon a hopper bottom car, but which is tobe understood as being applicable to doors in other situations, as well as doors mounted in other Ways, and which involves the principle of providing a bearing member or face upon a portion of the door structure, in position to receive a locking member, prefen bly a shaft, sliding in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the door in closed position, and holding the door closed, which bearing memher or face may, if so desired, be in the form of a wedge or cam, thereby developing from the impingement of the locking member not only retention of closed position, but a pressure of the door toward its seat, the locking member being influenced in its movement to and from impingement against the hearing member or face, as well as in a degree of its pressure against the wedge or cam (when employed), by an eccentric confined between two faces aligned in the direction of locking movement so that by rotating the eccentric, for instance, by having the locking member in the form of a laterally sliding rotary shaft upon which the eccentric is nonrotatably mounted and throwing a lever arm rigid with the shaft; the shaft serving as a locking'meminvolves the principle of securing the eccentric in locking position through means of a dog or equivalent device movable into the path of a member projecting from the shaft after the parts reach locked position. This feature, however, will be readily understood by referring to the patent, and is not dis V closed in detail in the present application in that it constitutes no part of the present invention.
The above stated advantages and objects are accomplished by means of the device disclosed in the accompanying drawings, ,in
wh ch elevation portion of a side discharge freight car which is immediately concerned with the present invention, sufiieicnt of the length of the car being selected to disclose the full width of one door and a fragment of the next door, and thereby suggest application of the invention for simultaneous control of a plurality of doors.

Figure 3 is a transverse cross sectional view of a car embodying the present invention, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure a is a fragmentary enlarged cross sectional view similar to Figure 3, showing the particular portion of the car construction which is immediately concerned with the present invention.
The various novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
By referring to the drawings, it will be noted that my invention as disclosed is applied to a railway car 1, having side discharge doorways defined by the vertical stiles or frames 2, corresponding in position to the stakes of the car frame, and having said doorways closed by doors 3 mounted to swing outwardly upon overhead longitudinally extend ing hinges 4. Doors 3 are constructed with battens 5 which may with advantage be constructed of rolled Z-bar stock, and these battens may, if desired, for the purpose of forcing the door into tightly closed position, have their lower ends fashioned into cams or wedge portions 6, which, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, preferably include in their design inclined striking faces 7 and beveled or cam shaped bearing faces 8, which are inclined inwardly and downwardly to the plane of the door. A vertically moving locking member 9 is provided, which in so far it concerns its immediate coaction with thebearing face 8, is in effect a pin or stud which, for convenience of mounting it upon the car and bringing it into bearing with a plurality of faces 8, for instance, when said faces are provided upon the two battens 5 of a door, is best developed in the form of a shaft 9, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, which finds its guide in the slots 10 of the stakes or vertical stiles 2 of the doorways, as shown in dotted line in Figure 4-. The slots 10 confine the shaft laterally with freedom of vertical movement into and out of cooperation with the faces 8, and has its vertical movement limited by the horizontal brackets 11. and 12, which confines the eccentrics 13 by which the shaft is positively shifted vertically.
In order to move the shaft t) vertically into and out of cooperation with the cam, 6, the eccentrics 13 confined vertically between the faces 11 and 12, as aforesaid, are mounted practice, castinx 1,71e,eee
upon the shaft atsuitable intervals, preferably through means which cause the shaft to rotate with the eccentrics; and means are provided for imparting rotation to the cccentrics at will, such, for instance, as a hand lever 1-l at one end of the shaft, or a socket of such form as will adapt it to receive a bar or handle 1i. Eccentrics 13 may be effectively assembled upon the shaft 9 by means of hub members 16 and tln'ough pins 17. In
s, forgings, or other fittings 18, suitable to provide the guide slots 10 and the faces 11 and 12 for vertically confining the eccentrics 13, will be provided and riveted, as at 19, pen the bases of the frame members 2.
In order to hold the eccentrics 13 to their positions of revolution, in which they present the shaft 9 in locking position upon the faces 8, the handle receiving socket 15 is provided with an additional element, such as, for instance, an integral toe 20, shown in Figure 1,
which, by swingin of the handle 1st from the upstanding position to the depending position will be brought into such position that the adjustable dog 21 may be lowered by re adjusting the nut 22 to abut the toe and hold the shaft against rotation by occupying sub stantially the entire space between the toe and the side of the car, which space is traversed by the too when the shaft is rotated. The dog 21 is adjustable by sliding it vcrtis cally, permitting the nut and bolt to, travel in the slot 23.
The above described mechanism is clearly set forth in the above identified patent and constitutes only one illustrative mechanism with which the present invention may be cmployed and, accordingly, it is to be understood that the applicant does not intend to limit his invention to the particular locking inechanisnti disclosed, but, as pointed out in the appended claims, contemplates the provision of a guard ant. shedding plate for any type of locking mechanism whichembodies substantially the same characteristics as to use and location of installation as that herein disclosed. The present invention, therefore, proceeds upon the principle of providing in combination with mechanism such as that abovedescribed, a guard or shedding plate 25, attached as at 26, between a portion 27 of the shedding floor of the car and the iongitudinal sill 28. The end 26 of the guard plate may be attached by means of a rivet 29, or by any similar mechanism.
Attention is directed to the fact that the guard plate terminates as at 30, at a point such that the plate covers the vital portions of the locking mechanism and projects outwardly to a point which will prevent any of the discharged material from accidentally falling upon or being lodged between the parts of the locking device. The guard plate .25 is further provided. with L-shaped cutout portions 31, as. shown in Figure 1, in a manner to accommodate the battens 5 of the door. The outer edge of the guard plates receive additional support from the brackets 32, Which'are inclined outwardly, having an arm 33 secured by any suitable means to the underside of the plate and a vertical depending extension or foot 34 secured to the longitudinal sill 28 by any suitable means, such as the rivets 35. i
The plate in addition to acting as a guard further acts in the capacity of a shedding surface, such as, for instance, a continuation of the shedding floor 27, as shown in Figure 4-, whereby the plate causes the discharged ballast to How beyond the locking mechanism and to fall clear thereof Withoutdisturbing or interfering with the operation of the parts.
