Application filed March 23, 1927. Serial'No. 177,677.l I
Y' nailinor machines and articularl to machines of a type designed for nailing hard wood flooring of that character that is not provided with the usual tongue and groove edges, but which is laid close and is nailed straight through from the top;` such flooring is usually in strips about one-half inch thick and two inches wide and when laid the boards are placed and then wedged tightly together and held by a few nails, then, after the vfloor` is completely laid, the
nails are driven in, row after row; being spaced about one-fourth inch from the edges of the boards at each side,
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a machine for nailing the boards after the flooring has been placed, and which' will loperate to advance automatically for proper spacingy of the nails along a row; that is, withflooring two inches wide, after being properly positioned to drive a A nail one-fourth inch from the edge of the rst board, the machine will be automat-ically advanced, afterthatnail is driven,
to a position for driving the next nail one-I fourthfinch from the opposite side edge of the board, then after that nail is driven it will advance ontor the next board to drive the nail one-fourth inch from its edge, and so Ion down the row, moving irst one and one-'half inches and then one-half inch.
Other objects 'reside in the-various details of construction andrcombination of parts as is hereinafter described and specilically pointed out in the claims terminating the specification. f
In accomplishing these objects, 1 have provided the improved details of construction, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side view, partly in vertical section, o'lf a nailing machine embodied by this invention.
Figure '3 is aperspect-ive view ofthe base portion of the device. y j
Figure 4; is a perspective view of the nail delivery slide. 1
Figure 5 yis 'a vancing shoe. n y y v Figure 6 is an enlarged section on line 6-6 in Figure 2. i
Figure 7 is aperspective yview of the advancing cam. fr Y l Referring more in detail to the drawings- 1 designates', in its entirety, the base portion vof thel device. This comprises a vertically extending metallic block la with a lat'plate 1b fixed-toits lower end to extend rearwardly thereofwith respect to the direction of movement of the machine duringa nailing perspective'view of the ad# operation. Fixedin the upper end'ofthe.
block 1n is a vertical tube 2 in which a plunger rod 3 is slidably contained and which, atits upper end, is equipped with'av hand hold 4l, in the form of a knob, -where-4 by the plungermay be manually .raised and then driven downwardly, and, at its lower the nails, as will presently be described;
end, vhas a nail driving pin 5, fixed thereiny i by 'a set screw 6, which is adapted to driveV v Secured-to the upper end of the tube 2 is a rearwardly diverted ybracket 8 and' revolubly contained therein is the yupper end` of a tube 9 which extends parallel with the tube 2 and which, kat its lower end, has a rod 9- .tixed therein as a continuation thereof which is contained revolubly within anopen.- ing 10 in a supporting brackctllthat is fixed tothe base member 11. Containedslid-v ably within the upper end vof the tube-9 is a rod V12 providedwith a spiral groove 13 into which a'lug 14V formed in the side wall Aof the tube 9 is adapted' to slide as a means of providing a connection v whereby the tube will be caused vto rotate when the rod 12 is moved reciprocally therein; AThis rod 12 is extended rigidly to an arniithat is xed to the upper end'ofV the plunger rod 3; the
connection providing that the rod `12 be moved upwardly and downwardly in accordaiice with movement of the plunger, andv the groove 13 is vso formed on the rod 12 that with each complete upward and downward reciprocal movement of the plunger, the tube 9 will be rotated one-'half turnforward and baclc y i.
Fixed inthe outer end of bracket 8' is a horizontally extending shaft 18 and revof vrustro-conical form provided with a door 20 that may be opened for filling the device l withnails. Formed in the walls of the drum neargits larger end are slots 2l Vthrough whichA the nails vmay tall intov a' funnel-,like receptacle 22 supported vfrom the tube 2 for delivery through a tube 23 ontoa nail slide 24 that is also fixed to the tube 2. Thisslide extends first i downwardly and outwardlyand is then bent at a right anglefaiid extends downwardly and inwardly to adjacent the the rear side of the base la.
upper end of a nail receiving opening 25- in This opening communicates with n a 'vertical .channel 26 through the vbase member ll.v The 'two por tions of the slide 24 :are provided with longitudinally extending slots 26 and 26 which permit the'passage therethrough of the nail y shanks but not their, head portions and the lowerend of'slot 26 is provided withV an enlargement 26fL through which the heads may pass to 4permit the nails to drop from the upper into Vthe n lower slot. Nails discharged from thefunnel tube 13 head first are, by
Vhas an'inwardlyturned lfinger 30 at its'liree s y vendprojecting into the path of the nails, as
this slide construction, reversed and deliv-v ered into' the lower slide groove in proper position for'nailing.
kThe nails as delivered .into the slot of the "lower Vslide are held ,againstl feeding .into the machine-except as used, byl a spring plate 2S that is fixed at one end by a screwn29 to the-side o'l the base block la and which shown in fF igure v3. A short pin 31 is also 'sli'dably contained in a laterally opening hole 32 in the base block, andthisengages,
at its outer end, with the spring plate and,
vplungerandlnail drivingpin 5 areagain lifted Afor the nextldriving operation. As the plungerr islitted, the pin -31 and finger moveinwardly and the latter again holds backthe nails in the delivery slide so that they A"cannot flow freely into the opening 25.
The nail container l9.is provided at one jendwith a ratchet wheel 35 adapted to be engaged by apawl 36 at the outer1 end o'a lever 3 7 that isvpivotally mountedfrom the I fbracketrarm 8 by a pin 38 with the inner end Vof the lever extended upwardlyand inwardly to a position to be engaged by the yhandle member 4'with each downward, driving movement of the latter. I:Thisengagement of the handle piecewwith,y the'lever rocks the latter to actuate 'the pawl and ratchet to revolve the drum 19-so that nails will befed from the latter into the funnel 22 5 thereby controlling the yfeed of the lby a hooked pawl 46 that is pivotallyl attached to one arm 47t of abell crank mounted by a pivot pin 48 on the bracket 44; the other arm 47" ot' the bell crank is connected operatively to the lower end of a bar 49 that is slidably attached, by means cita collar 50 at its'upper end, about thelowerend portion of the tube 9. Mountedon this slide bar 49 is a rollei" 51 and this operates in rolling` Contact with the'edge of' a circular cam 52 that'isrevoluble 'on the lower end of' .the rod 9" which isfixed 'in the'lower end of tube9. The hub portion'of this cam has a ratchet 53 adapted to be engaged by a .ratchet collar 54 that isjslidably keyed on ltherod 9 and which is pressed against' the tatably one-half turn.
The cam 52has two risesforined thereon which are at diametrically opposite points,
as designatedrat 52 and 52h; the 'rise 521,V
being relatively high as con'ipffired tothe other. "This provides that the movement of the slide 49' when actuated by the. higher .part 52b of the cam will bejgi'eaterthan when c ica actuated by the rise 52l and the rotative y movement of the knurled advancing wheels 40-41 produced through the bellcrank, ratchet and pawl connection with the slide 49 is governed accordingly. y
A bell crank-60 is alsorpivotally attached to thel outer end of the bracket 1l 'andk this has one arm attached' operatively to the low er end of the slide 49 and its other armpivot-l ally connected withl presser foot 62 that engages the floor as aineansof supplementing the wheels 40541 iiiadvancing thedevice with each upward reciprocal movement of the slideg'the distance of advancement being in accordance with the movement of the slide as provided bythe two rises in the cam. A 'spring 65 is fixed to .an arm .ot the ,bell crank to bear against the `root to hold it inyholding Contact with the lfloor, and thefoot has' a plurality of pointed pins 67 thereon for engaging the fioorto prevent j slippage off the shoe when pressure is-ap plied against it. justably mounted in the bracket .'11 to limit the inward movement of the bell crank 60. A gauge bar is pivotally attached to the base, 'as in Figure, 2, with a marker 7l at its outer end, which is used asa means of gauging the spacing of the rows of nails and Also, a set screw 68 is ad i lWith the device properly set for starting,
at one edge of the board, the operator vfirst actuates the plunger 3- downwardly to displace the linger 30 orthe delivery of a nail from slide 2linto opening 25. f He then grasps the knob land draws the plunger upwardly so that the nail drops Yinto the channel 2G. lHe AthenA drives Vthe plunger down so that the pin 5 at the lower end of the plunger drives the nail completely in. rlhe plunger is then again raised toits up'- per linnn-thereby rotating the tube 9 and cam 52 vso that the high rise 52b oit the cam will lift the slide 49 and actuate the bell cranks i7 and 60 to rotate the wheels 40 and el and also actuate the presser toot 62 against the floor to advance the machine, through the farther distance of travel as provided by the cam, so that it is in proper position for driving a nail in the opposite edge of the board. rlhe plunger is then driven downwardly to drive this nail, then as it is again raised, the cam is again rotatably advanced to cause the lower rise 52ZL to actuate the slide 49 to eiiect the advancement of the machine through its shorter distance of travel as provided by the cam sopthat the machine will be advanced onto thenext board. Thus, the machine, as designed for two inch flooring boards, would be'alternately advanced one and one-half inches and then one-half inch so vas to position it for driving the nails one-fourth inch from the edges of the boards. For boards of a different width, cams 52 with their rises properly formed for the desired spacing of Vnails could be provided for interchangeable use on'the rod 9.
The machine as here shown is manually operated but it is apparentthat it could be operated mechanically by a motor.
