LIQUID-DISPENSING APPARATUS.
Application led lFebruary 20, 1928. Serial No. 255,642.
My invention relates to dispensing apparatus for liquids, particularly adaptable for dispensing very small quantities of liquids as for lilling cigarette and cigar lighters where the liquid is volatile and the container into which the liquid is dispensed is relatively small.
The particular object of my invention is to provide means of draining back the discharge from the dispensing apparatus in the event the discharge handle is inadvertently operated as it has been found that when this apparatus is standing on counters, customers have a bad habit of attempting to operate it without having the lighter in position to receive the liquid with the result that the volatile and inflammable liquid is discharged upon the counter setting up a tire hazard.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of the apparatus;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Referring to the drawings in detail, l is a well for containing the liquid into which is inserted a discharge pipe 2 within the hollow column 3 that carries the pumping apparatus.
The liquid is elevated by the pump plunger 4 working in the cylinder 5 which is in communication with the pipe 2. This passageway is controlled by the ball check 6 which is adapted to seat when the plunger descends against the resistance of the spring 7 under the influence of the handle 8. When this occurs the liquid is discharged through the passageway 9 and spout l0. In the event that the cigarette lighter is not in a position to he lilled, a spring pressed return pipe 11 is maintained beneath the spout nozzle l() which pipe communicates through the passageway 12 in the wall of the column 3 with the reservoir l so that the liquid so discharged will drain back into the reservoir l.
This swinging pipe is maintained yieldingly in its drain back position by the helical spring 13 located within the enclosure 14 which is a part of the column 3. One end of the spring is attached to the drain back pipe l1 and the other is attached to the casing 3.
When the operator desires to place the container to be filled beneath the spout, this drain back can be moved to one side against l1 snaps back into dra-in position.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a device for dispensing measured quantities of a highly inflammable fluid the combination of a comparatively wide base of shallow depth and having` means for supporting said base on the top of a show case, a standard, integral with said base, a cylinder having extensions at its bottom for supporting the cylinder on said standard, conduit means connecting said cylinder with the interior of said base, a plunger in said cylinder supported by a spring and having an extension comprising a handle, a spout mounted on an enlarged port-ion of said cylinder and adapted to communicate with a drain-back supported by said column and a plurality yof valves supported by said cylinder.
2. A device for dispensing measured quantities of a highly inflammable liquid consisting of a base of a comparatively shallow depth and having means for supporting the same on the top of a show case, a stand- A ard mounted on said base, a cylinder mounted on said standard, conduit means connected with said cylinder and extending into the interior of said base, a piston in said cylinder adapted when actuated to dispense a measured quantity of an inflammable liquid, a handle for actuating said piston and extending above the same, a spout mounted on said cylinder at the lower end thereof, a return pipe adapted to communicate with the discharge end of said spout and mounted on said stand and adjacent to said base, said base being of wide proportions and supporting said column, cylinder, pump and handle substantially in the center thereof to prevent tipping When said pump is operated.
